An old EotW procedure discussion

[edit]
From B7's talk page

Just noticed this edit to the procedure for placing the recipient infobox on their talk page. A heads-up: if you don't use the subst: syntax, then any future changes to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/infobox will have to be backwards compatible to avoid breaking its use on the recipient talk pages. To avoid this problem, it was recommended that the subst: syntax be used. I appreciate you may prefer to follow a different procedure; I just wanted to let you know what issues may occur down the road. Thanks for all the work you do for the editor retention project! isaacl (talk) 04:07, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Isaacl for watching. I really do appreciate your safeguarding the machinery at WER.
  • As you must know by now, I'm not that great with using the "behind-the-scenes" tools or understanding the why and how they work. (I still have a rotary phone!). I have undone the edit you mentioned above. The reason I removed it (months back) was because it is not compatible with the system that I currently use. And, since I am pretty much the only one doing stuff, I thought there might be a problem if someone else came along, and in the spirit of helping, followed instructions and things got messed up.
  • For example...right now, the most recent entry into the Hall of Fame was created today by using a new template, Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/Archive 28 for Dmarquard. I forget which editor helped set it up (3 or 4 months ago) but it seems to work just fine. Each week I create a new Template. Next week's will be #29. Its based on "If Template so-and-so exists....". But the explanation of how its done is nowhere to be found. Anyway...thanks again for keeping an eye on whats happening. I appreciate your help. ```Buster Seven Talk 04:43, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just so you know. On Tuesday, I cut-n-paste the Infobox for the recepients' talk page from the sandbox where they are created not from the project page. TY.```Buster Seven Talk 04:55, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion related to the Hall of Fame setup is User talk:Equazcion/Archive 8#Simplifying additions to EotW Hall of Fame. Equazcion pre-populated the Hall of Fame page to include up to Archive 123, so as new archive pages are added, they appear on the Hall of Fame page. I recall now the issue with trying to catch up on notifying previous recipients, if the current recipient is now someone else. If this happens again, since each notification infobox is now going on its own archive page, you can subst: the corresponding archive page on the recipient's talk page. For example:
{{subst:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/Archive 28}}
Hope that helps! isaacl (talk) 05:39, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it does! Notice the lightbulb above my head. :~)....```Buster Seven Talk 05:43, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome Aboard!

[edit]

EC@Jim Cartar: What you have done is fine and I appreciate the help. Thanks for all the corrections at the recipient response page. From now on I suggest we use this page to communicate and to keep everything all together and specific to our needs. Let me point out one thing before we continue. I REALLY enjoy doing all the stuff necessary to create The EotW Award. I've been doing most of the work for the past year and a half and, except for some minimal help, I've been at it by myself. I'm retired so I get real joy from managing the Eddy Project and DOING the steps myself. I don't mean to sound rude and I hope you can understand my position. Your energy to participate and to help is wonderful...but I don't need a replacement. I'm glad you have "come on board" and I'm sure we can work together. Watching over the Eddy Award has become about 90% of what I do here at WikiPedia. If you start to do everything, I have no real purpose here. From now on we should converse at "Eddy Award Admin" so we can watch our lists for entries there. See you there.```Buster Seven Talk 15:08, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just got home and I need to pick up my cat from the vet. I.ll check back here in a couple of hours. Then we can discuss and designate what you and I will take on as partners in this endevour. Thanks! ```Buster Seven Talk 15:15, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you friend for the kind explanation. And thank you for all you did for 1 and a ½ year. I totally understand your position. Now let's discuss what will be our tasks. Please decide what should I do for the project. I suggest you take 90% tasks and leave me 10%. What do you think? Jim Carter (talk) 16:16, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

....some notes

[edit]
  • I always like to have at least 4 nominees in the "The Q". That way we can predict a shortage before it happens.
  • I try to let discussion and seconding happen at the nominations talk page without MY comments or MY seconding. Not always, but usually. For instance, I seconded Smallbones because the nominator is a good WikiFriend and it was my way of thanking Core for the nomination. But usually I wait and watch and see what happens. For most nominees, it has not been unusual for there to be no discussion at all. If there is no second after 13 days and there is no problem with the nomination, I WILL second the nomination and move it to the Q on the 14th day. In general, you and I should do our best to be impartial.
  • Right now we are "rich" with candidates but when there is a shortage (less than 4 anywhere) I go to the WER talk page and do a little advertising. If you check the archives you'll see what I mean. I used that method to inform all the WER members of the current Awardee and to plant the seed of their searching of their interactions with editors for candidates.
  • In general, I save up nominees (off Wiki) that I find for when there is a shortage...to prevent a week without an Award. ```Buster Seven Talk 18:25, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Buster7: Okay I got it. I will follow the above notes. Now let's decide our tasks. I have a plan, should we advertise our project here? I know an expert image editor and animator. He can create an advertisement image animation for us. Should I ask him about this?? The advertisement banner will sound something like this:
[…] Do you know an unsung Wikipedia hero?

Click here and nominate him/her for Editor of the Week and express your Wikilove and respect for him/her. […]

I think it will increase the traffic in our project. Your opinion?? Jim Carter (talk) 19:39, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good John Carter (talk) 21:46, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
👍 Like John from Idegon (talk) 22:31, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@John from Idegon, John Carter, and Buster7: please leave a talk back on Dennis, GP, MM and Isaacl's talk page. I think they missed the echo notification. My connection is very slow, I can't load any WMF pages. Please help. Thanks, Jim Carter (talk) 13:56, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Jim Carter (talk) 18:30, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Delegation of weekly tasks

[edit]

Week starts on Sunday

Monday

Tuesday

  • B7 will post the infobox at the awardee's talk page. The intention is to give a little added celebration a day or two later.

OK

[edit]
Okay, I have understood the process. -
  1. After GP or B7 delivers the award, I will add the recipent on the Eddy list @ the EotW main page.
  2. Next I will watch over the recipents talk page for response.
  3. Then I will add the response (by copying the full text added by the recipent) on the recipent response page.
  4. My next job is to update the main page template (Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page) with the draft infobox from the sandbox.

@Buster7: Please tell me if I have mistaken something. Or something is missing from my above task list. Thanks, Jim Carter (talk) 19:21, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Jim Cartar: Looks good! ```Buster Seven Talk 19:58, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the corrections, @Buster. Jim Carter (talk) 20:09, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Jim Cartar: Iryna has responded. ```Buster Seven Talk 16:07, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have seen it earlier today, but can't update the response page due to poor internet connection. I have added the response now. Thanks for the reminder friend. Jim Carter (talk) 18:54, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
  • NOTE: This section was moved here from B7's talk page in order to centralize advice on procedures

Hey Buster, just popping in - thanks for awarding last week's EotW. I am on the internet for a little while this afternoon, but then will be off again. I skimmed the administrative procedures conversation, and think it's pretty solid - it should be good having Jim around. Can you award the next two editors of the week as well? Thanks. I will say more when I fully return. God bless! -- Go Phightins! 18:47, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Go Phightins!:. Always nice to hear from you. Since I am the nominator for the next two, I will ping @Jim Cartar: and ask him to award the next two. By the way, I just "lift" the old one and then cut-n-paste the new one over it at the new awardee's page. Is that how you do it ... or is there a template? ```Buster Seven Talk 00:25, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Under Wikipedia:EotW#Announcing recipients, see the bullet item "Update the recipient's talk page". The first sub-bullet item has a link to the template used to notify the recipient. isaacl (talk) 03:55, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks once again Isaacl. As usual, it takes a few test runs for me to figure it out but I think I got it. I have a feeling that Jim Cartar has a better grip on tech stuff and he will have no trouble with the next two noms. ```Buster Seven Talk 06:12, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done Please check and let me know, if I have overlooked any mistake. Thanks, Jim Carter (talk) 11:28, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By Jove! I think you've got it. ```Buster Seven Talk 13:09, 29 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Next EotW

[edit]

So I will give out the next Editor of the Week award, am I right Buster7? Jim Carter (talk) 12:12, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. that's right. ```Buster Seven Talk 12:29, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply Buster7, my prep is ready here. Jim Carter (talk) 13:11, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Award given. Take a look friend. Thanks, Jim Carter 07:35, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well done. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:12, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What happens if the current editor of the week does not respond to the award?

[edit]

Buster: What happens if the current editor of the week does not respond to the award?? Jim Carter 14:20, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you asked. We don't do anything! We want the response to be spontaneous and from the heart. Not everyone responds and that is completely OK. Do I wish they would offer a thanks and say something wonderful about the Editor of the Week Award? Of course. But not every recipient does and in no way should we try to create a response that isn't there. ```Buster Seven Talk 18:48, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Okay I understood. Thanks, Jim Carter 09:58, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good bye

[edit]

Hello my dear friend, I'm going to take a long wikibreak, for more than 2 years. That means I'm not going to edit for sometime. So, I request you to do all my tasks on behalf of WP:EotW. You can contact me only through editor Titodutta (I'm not going to have email access), he has my phone number. Many thanks for all you did. God bless, good bye. Your friend, Jim Carter 19:16, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
