Federation Walk[edit]

I just completed a substantive re-write of Federation Walk, which had been seemingly abandoned for some time. I'm no longer local having relocated back to the US so I'm sure there's some information I've missed so I'd appreciate any other eyes interested to have a look at it. I realise it's only "supported" by WP Queensland, but I'm assuming some locals might have some information to add. Thanks! Travellingcari (talk) 04:20, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme[edit]

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Queensland[edit]

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:37, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

I was wondering what other project members believed were this projects 5 highest priority tasks. I would list getting the following done.

  1. Queensland to Good Article
  2. Economy of Queensland to B class  Done
  3. Mary River to B class History of Queensland to B class
  4. Geography of Queensland to B class
  5. Mackay, Queensland to B class

- Shiftchange (talk) 22:06, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I second shiftchange with the exception of the Mary and Mackay, i think with our Q150 celebrations currently underway it would be an appropriate time to consider Queensland from a historical standpoint, incorporating the pioneering rail and aviation industry, Sugar, Electricity, etc. (talk) 03:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Milestone Announcements[edit]

  • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
  • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
  • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 22:14, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group[edit]

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:22, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Article alerts[edit]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:35, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

Creating "North West Queensland" category.[edit]

I've just created this, and I'm slowing adding this category to applicable articles. I'll probably eventually add subcategories as other region categories do, but at this point I'm not rushing. :-) I also don't quite agree with the NW Qld region article being named Gulf Country, but that's another issue altogether. If anyone notices me doing anything obviously stupid in regards to the new category, feel free to slap me about and point me in the right direction.Johnmc (talk) 10:33, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Good job, looks fine. There might be more electoral divisions to add. If you want to change the name start a discussion on the Gulf Country talk page about moving it. A name change to North West Queensland might be best so that the overlap into NT can be excluded from the article.- Shiftchange (talk) 23:41, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

John Paul Langbroek[edit]

This article was created by User:Johnpaullangbroek -- not the actual politician, but almost certainly another sockpuppet of Universe Daily (see Wikipedia:Long term abuse/Universe Daily for details). I've cut this article back to a stub because of reliability concerns; I invited editors here to have a go at expanding it into a useful, reliable article. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 21:44, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Last month I tried to fix Brisbane Busway stations that were listed in both a parent category and a subcategory. I found in that case there was another overlap with the Category:Public transport in Brisbane that has to be fixed. Earlier this month I found many Queensland power stations listed in both a parent category and a sub-category. I fixed that only to discover another overlap with the Category:Buildings and structures in Queensland. I have just discovered many Category:Indigenous Australian communities are listed in subcategories as well. I wanted to bring this to the attention of editors because correcting this over-categorisation is a tiresome task and seems to be systemic. I don't know why this is happening because categories have always been hierarchical. - Shiftchange (talk) 03:15, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement[edit]

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:49, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Page layout[edit]

I was trying to fix the bad layout that has occurred since the Assessment Table was expanded, but I wasn't successful. Could someone else fix it? - 13:29, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

There is a discussion about the article's name of GLNG, a Santos-led Gladstone-based LNG project. Your input is appreciated. Beagel (talk) 16:59, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Assessing importance[edit]

I have been assessing the importance of WP:QLD article for a few months now. It is down from 1500 to around 320 with only biographical articles remaining to be assessed. It would be great if some other WikiProject participants helped with the rest so we can join Western Australia (24 un-assessed articles) as the only other state or territory with assessment complete. - Shiftchange (talk) 10:20, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Big thanks to Commander Keane and anyone else who demolished this backlog. I'm going to continue rating Brisbane articles and ensure the backlog is tended to from now on. - Shiftchange (talk) 07:30, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

John Harbin[edit]

I've done a bit of work on the article of rugby league and association football coach John Harbin. I'm trying to find out some information on his playing career as well as (presumably) his academic life. One of the refs in his article suggests he studied a teaching degree and he is referred to as a sports psychologist, which seems to suggest he had some sort of tertiary education. Any help would be appreciated. Hack (talk) 15:45, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Queensland articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Queensland articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast clearly need inclusion and maybe Bundaberg as well. What do actual Queenslanders think? -- Mattinbgn (talk) 00:15, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
Toowoomba - definitely, Sunshine Coast - yes, shame it is still start class, Bundaberg - possibly, though the article is a bit of a mess. I would suggest Economy of Queensland as well. In the meantime I will work on Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Coral Sea and Q1 to get them towards B class. I notice Torres Strait Islands needs references too. - Shiftchange (talk) 01:01, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject cleanup listing[edit]

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 21:27, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Template:cite CHIMS[edit]

I noticed many articles were citing CHIMS incorrectly (using sessionid, not mentioning the publisher or work, etc.) so I created {{cite CHIMS}}, very similarly to {{cite AHD}} and {{cite AHPI}} to ease referencing. I'm going to apply it to the 90ish articles citing this source. I'd be happy to hear any comments. Cheers. --Muhandes (talk) 08:56, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

This is handy, thanks for setting it up. Is it possible to add Retrieved on date to this template? - Shiftchange (talk) 06:07, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Petrie Terrace State School[edit]

G'day Guys,

Yeah you won the State of Origin. Yeah Lockyer's a legend. Time to move on. I suppose I have to watch AFL or Soccer or something (Lacrosse? Bah).

Can someone please have a look at Petrie Terrace State School? It's an old public school that desperately needs expansion to satisfy notability requirements. If anyone can have a go, that'd be fantastic. -danjel (talk to me) 07:23, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

No evidence of notability provided or likely. I suggest deletion. -- Mattinbgn (talk) 07:30, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm positive attitude! The notability can be provided for, because the school is one of the oldest in the state. If anyone else would like to have a go, that'd be great. -danjel (talk to me) 08:24, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

Help wanted[edit]

There is a list of articles that need or might need to be tagged with |QLD=yes|QLD-importance=low on their discussion pages. The list started at 3,422 entries and I have done about a quarter of them over the last 5 months. Could some other participants in the WikiProject help? - Shiftchange (talk) 14:04, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedians to the Games[edit]

If there are any sport fans lurking around, Wikimedians to the Games is a collaboration drive to improve Australian Paralympic articles, with the most active contributors having an opportunity to go attend the Paralympic Games and to cover the Games behind the scenes with a press pass. The top two contributors will get their airfare and accommodation paid for. :) The drive official starts on 10 January 2012. --LauraHale (talk) 10:03, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

If you're participating or considering in participating in Wikimedians to the Games, you may be interested in attending the events below. They may provide an opportunity to get information to write a Wikinews article or to take pictures for points on Commons. If you're not participating, it would still be great to see people attending these events to take pictures for use on Wikipedia and Wikinews. If you do decide to attend, consider hosting a Wikimedia meetup at the end or the evening of the event, or even just letting HOPAU organisers know you are planning to attend. If you leave a message on my talk page, I can help you promote the meetup. :) If you need help with organising attendance because of transport cost issues or accessibility in terms of wanting press access, again please get in touch. :) --LauraHale (talk) 06:56, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live![edit]

WikiProject X icon.svg

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015[edit]

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: WikiConference Australia 2015

As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

  • indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
  • add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at or

We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. Kerry (talk) 00:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Folks, just letting you know we will not be proceeding with Wikiconference Australia 2015 originally proposed for 3-5 October 2015. Thanks to those of you who expressed your support. You are free to attend the football finals instead :-) Kerry (talk) 08:12, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

New 5000 Challenge for Australia[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge and the wider Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Australia but fuelled by a contest if desirable to really get articles on every state/territory and subject mass improved. After every 100 articles done for Australia this would feed into the main Oceania one. I will start a 1000 one for your state if there is the support. I would like some support from wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start anyway with some articles to make doing a Destubathon for Australia and Oceania worthwhile!
