The World Games 2021 will be the eleventh World Games, a major international multi-sport event, meant for sports, or disciplines or events within a sport, that were not contested in the Olympic Games. It is scheduled to be held from July 15 to 25, 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. It was chosen by the International World Games Association on January 22, 2015.[1] It will feature 33 unique sports which will be contested at 30 venues across the Birmingham area.[2]

Birmingham was chosen as the host city by the International World Games Association on January 22, 2015.[3]

Bidding process[edit]

Birmingham's bid was presented by Edgar Welden, Scott Myers, and David Benck. The cities that bid for the 2021 Games were:

The final decision was announced on January 22, 2015, in Lausanne, awarding The World Games 2021 to Birmingham.[4][5]

Community Engagement[edit]

The World Games 2021 Experience Delivered by Shipt[edit]

In March 2019, The World Games 2021 unveiled a mobile experience, designed to generate excitement for the event and educate the local community on the sports of The 2021 Games. [8] The traveling Mercedes Sprinter Van includes a rock climbing wall, a sumo wrestling activity, photo opportunities and an interactive trivia game where guests can win prizes.

The van made its official debut at the 15th Annual MortgageBanc Chili Cook-Off on March 2, 2019. It will continue to tour throughout 2019, 2020 and 2021.

World of Opportunity[edit]

In June 2019, The World Games 2021 announced the kickoff of their supplier diversity program, World of Opportunity. [9] The program, which was unveiled to an audience of 400 at the Birmingham Crossplex, allows certified, diverse businesses to compete for contracts to provide goods and services for The World Games 2021. The categories accepted include (but are not limited to) transportation services, event production, security, promotional items, merchandise, sports equipment, food service, technology, printing, medical supplies, event equipment, waste removal and construction services.
