Glossary of Shinto

Yahiko jinja (弥彦神社), also known as Iyahiko-jinja is the Japanese Shinto shrine in Yahiko, Niigata. It is located at the eastern base of Mount Yahiko in the middle of Sado Yahiko Quasi-National Park.[1]

The solemn shrine standing at the tranquil foot of a mountain is popularly known as a power spot for love and good fortune[2]

History

Yahiko shrine was already well established when a new building was created by Imperial edict in the 8th century.[3] The enshrined kami is

  • Ameno-Kaguyama-no-Mikoto (天香山命) who is said to have taught fishing, rice cultivation, salt production and the other basics of farming to the residents as well as helping to build the nation[4].[5]

Yahiko was one of the chief Shinto shrines (ichinomiya) of the old Echigo Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Niigata Prefecture. [6]

The present shrine was rebuilt in 1916. The earlier shrine buildings were destroyed by a 1912 fire which started in the village.[3]
