Šlapanice (Czech pronunciation: [ˈʃlapaɲɪtsɛ]) is a town in Brno-Country District in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 8,000 inhabitants.
Administrative parts
[edit]The village of Bedřichovice is an administrative part of Šlapanice.
Geography
[edit]Šlapanice is located about 4 kilometres (2 mi) east of Brno. It lies in the Dyje–Svratka Valley. The Říčka stream flows through the town.
History
[edit]The first written mention of Šlapanice is from 1235.[2]

Economy
[edit]The largest employer based in the town's territory is CCI Czech Republic, a branch of IMI plc. It produces valves for the oil, petrochemical and energy industries.[5]
Transport
[edit]The D1 motorway from Brno to Ostrava runs around the town.
Šlapanice is located on the railway line Brno–Uherské Hradiště.[6]
Sights
[edit]The main landmark of Šlapanice is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was originally a medieval Gothic church, rebuilt in the Baroque style in the mid-18th century.[7]
