Username
Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Barry Goldwater", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it is identical to the name of a public figure, Barry Goldwater. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below) and continue editing.A username should not be promotional, appear to represent a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account. However, you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87". You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
- Adding
{{unblock-un|your new username here}}
below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" on their talk page. - At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
- Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
- Adding
{{unblock|Your reason here}}
below this notice, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. TheSandDoctor Talk 04:38, 19 May 2020 (UTC)E0126E (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Requested username:
Administrators should consider discussing any unblock with the blocking administrator (see the blocking policy).
If you ask the blocking administrator to comment on this request, please replace this template with the following:
{{unblock-un on hold | 1=blocking administrator | 2=E0126E | 4=~~~~}}
If you accept the unblock request, replace this template with the following:
{{unblock-un reviewed | 1=E0126E | accept=Allowing username change to requested username. Please select an option from [[Wikipedia:Changing username]] and file a request as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. ~~~~}}
If you decline the unblock request, replace this template with the following, replacing {{subst:Decline reason here}}
with any specific rationale. If you do not edit the text after "decline=", a default reason why the request was declined will be inserted.
{{unblock-un reviewed | 1=E0126E | decline={{subst:Decline reason here}} ~~~~}}
TheSandDoctor Barry Goldwater died in 1998, so I'm not seeing how this username violates the username policy. They've never edited about Barry Goldwater as far as I can tell. 331dot (talk) 15:17, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
- @331dot: They are editing about Republican primaries, vandalizing articles, editing about congress during Goldwater's time as a senator, vandalizing some more (politically related), and seem to have an overall interest in US politics throughout the life of Goldwater. Barry Goldwater Jr. (a former congressman) is also very much alive and this could be considered similar to the name of an existing living person, close enough that a block is warranted on those grounds as well. The current username could reasonably be considered potential impersonation of two different people (father and son) and grounds for a block per WP:UPOL. "...to impersonate or falsely represent yourself as someone else" from WP:UPOL does not necessarily apply to the actions of an account, merely the username itself. I hope that that helps to explain my rationale and make it clearer. --TheSandDoctor Talk 01:51, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- TheSandDoctor Thanks for your reply. I was not aware that there was a Barry Goldwater Jr.(and that he was a congressman to boot). I do agree with your explanation. 331dot (talk) 08:39, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
