Black History Month First Edit at NPR[edit]

(This event has already occurred. Feel free to take a look to get an idea of what happened.)

If you've ever wondered how Wikipedia gets made or want to help the encyclopedia better represent history, come join us.

As a part of NPR's celebration of Black History Month 2015, we will collaborate to update and improve existing Wikipedia articles about trailblazers from the last 100 years of black history, 1915 to 2015. We'll learn about Wikipedia's philosophy and how to make simple edits—and then give you plenty of time and help to make your own first edit.

FAQ[edit]

Where is the event?

We'll be in Seminar North at NPR Headquarters. If you're a guest, tell security you're here to help with the Wikipedia tutorial, and they'll help you sign in.

What should I bring?

* A laptop, especially if you're a not an NPR employee
* An interest in black history or editing Wikipedia!

Do I have to register to attend, or can I just arrive on the day?

If you're not an NPR employee, you'll need to sign up below with your Wikipedia username and your real name. If you don't feel comfortable listing your real name below, just send Veronica a note with it.
NPR employees can just show up, but are encouraged to RSVP below.

You didn't answer my question!

Feel free to ask on this project's talk page. We welcome suggestions on the development and progress of this meetup.

Editing Wikipedia[edit]

Resources[edit]

Each article in the to-do section also has a resources link that the awesome NPR Librarians—Sarah, Jane, and Ayda—put together. The linked Google Docs are open to all people with an NPR email address. If you are a guest, please pair up with an NPR employee to access the resources.

You can also look up resources yourself using one of NPR's many reference library databases.

To Do List[edit]

Note that the "resources" links below require signing in with an @npr.org email account.

Add citations to these articles[edit]

Write more on these articles[edit]

Any of the above articles could have more written about them. The one that could use the most help is about Alice Coachman.

Bonus[edit]

These two folks were added to our list after the edit-a-thon; feel free to dig tidy them up!

Results / Outcomes[edit]

Great work, everyone! We improved thirteen articles and six people made their first ever Wikipedia edits.

If I've added your change below, feel free to claim it by typing three tildas (~) at the end. —Verbistheword (talk) 16:00, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
