Untitled

[edit]

Birth year is 1893

[edit]

According to a Brazilian immigrant card from July 1943, which stated that Julien Mandel was 50-years old by that time, he was born in 1893, and by then he held Polish citizenship. Reference: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9XB-JLTM?i=364&cc=2140223

Death was way after 1935

[edit]

Julien Mandel settled in Brazil during WWII, married to Maria de Lourdes Brochier de Medeiros and had at least one daughter in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, later moving to Recife where he worked at IAA (Instituto do Açúcar e do Álcool - Sugar and Alcohol Institute). According to his grandson Amom Mandel Lins, there it at least one picture of Julian Mandel dated from 1960. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 191.32.42.92 (talk) 00:37, 14 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Name on postcards

[edit]

The article states:

'The full name, Julian Mandel, usually appears on the front of these card-sized photographs'
No. For a start, the French version of the name is Julien [not Julian] Mandel. Secondly, a persual of the cards credited to him shows that his name appears as 'J. MANDEL'. Here are a couple of examples:

When it is spelled out, as on the cover of Nus Fantastique, it is Julien. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.253.120.118 (talk) 15:07, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

dates of birth and death

[edit]

I just reverted changes by User:Amom Mandel. Amom Mandel could be a family that has correct information about Julian Mandel, however he did not presented any references to support his claim that Julian died in 1961. --Jarekt (talk) 04:41, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A shame that Amom Mandel was not able to verify the facts so far. He is the grandson of Julien Mandel according to https://www.flickr.com/people/amommandel/ and might certainly provide useful facts about this grandfather. There are a couple of things that can be verified from other sources:
  • [3] proves he was born around 1893 and emigrated to Brazil in 1935; it also states his full name "Julien Mandel Mandelbaum".
  • [4] (subscription needed) shows Julien Mandel was naturalized Brazilian in 1943 at the age of 50
  • Julien Mandel at IMDb and [5], [6] prove that he used to produce feature documentary films until at least 1945
The details claimed by Amom Mandel have not been verified yet, but at least we know now, that the dates of birth and death given here as "1872 - 1935" (which are unsourced) can by no means be correct. --FordPrefect42 (talk) 21:31, 16 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up! Confirmation of later death date for Mandel means his images will be off Commons for 10 years!

[edit]

The apparently confirmed later than generally thought death date for Julian Mandel means that Mandel's photos are not yet legally copyright expired in his home country of France, so there is a pending deletion request: Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:Photographs_by_Julian_Mandel (For those who don't know, the Commons discussions are just as to matters of copyright, not whether they think they are good images something, so it's not a matter of votes.) It looks likely that if the 1961 date is confirmed, Mandel's works on Commons will be deleted, with undeletion scheduled for 2032. BUT! A good bit of Madel's work (pre-1926 publication) is ok for US use - and here at English language Wikipedia. So if someone wishes to local copies of a good sample and upload them here on en:w (with appropriate note that they are not yet internationally OK for Commons - {{Do not move to Commons|expiry=2032}}) they could be used for articles here for the next 10 years. Heads up before are those easily accessible images on Commons disappear for 10 years! -- Infrogmation (talk) 00:10, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
