1964 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1964 U.S. Open Championship was the 64th U.S. Open played June 18-20 at Congressional Country Club (Blue Course) in Bethesda, Maryland. Ken Venturi won the championship despite almost fainting due to heat exhaustion.
Venturi fired a front-nine 30 in the morning round and was on his way home at the 16th tee when he was overcome by the 100-degree heat and humidity. He looked over at Raymond Floyd, his playing partner, and said, "I don't know if I can make it in." He did, but it was questionable that he would make it back out after the alloted 45-minute rest period. Under doctor's orders Venturi rested and soon was ready to tee off, trailing Tommy Jacobs by two strokes with 18 holes remaining. With the doctor accompanying him carrying salt tablets and iced tea, Venturi slowly carved out a 70, good for a four-round total of 278. Jacobs, who had tied a record with a blistering second-round 64, ballooned to a 76 for a 282. The victory was the first for Venturi in four years as a pro.
This edition of the U.S. Open was the final one in which 36 holes were played on the final day. The tournament shifted to its present format of four 18-hole daily rounds the following year.
