Controversy[edit]

Is there a better section header besides Death Controversy? I just walked in here to see what kind of information the article has and I am given the impression that she's going to die at some point in the second game (as we all know she's still alive after the events of the first due to the way the second game is presented). I have not yet had the opportunity to play Dreamfall, but I am already spoiled to (what appears to be) a major plot twist. Whether she really is dead or not or whether she will appear again in the third game of the series, I do not know since I have not yet read the section. --Remy Suen 11:06, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, technically, since both the heading and the table of contents are placed after the spoiler tag, it was your fault. :) However, as a fellow human being, I apologize, even though I don't feel inclined to change anything without a definite proposal for a new section title. It is unfortunate but you are correct in that it cannot really be helped per se given the way that informational biographical articles tends to be presented, birth, life, death, and then whatever happens after said person's death. "April Ryan is considered one of the most memorable characters in the history of the video games"... Mind if I ask what people consider her one of the most memorable characters in video game history? Journalists, game developers or just the game's more fanatical followers? Cite sources please!

I see, well, here is a quote out of GameSpot's Dreamfall review: "The Longest Journey introduced one of gaming's most memorable heroines, a smart and resourceful young woman named April Ryan." No, I just don't find her all that significant. Let's face it. She might not have Miss Ryan's refined character, but Lara Croft was and still is the probably most well-known female character the computer/video game industry have created. Sure, she's better remembered for her looks than her intellect but one cannot ignore the impact she's had on the way female characters are designed to this day (Sidenote: I still think April was designed to appeal to teenagers somewhat with her thin waist and rather wide hips). Although when it comes down to pure adventure games, that's where I think she's rather significant, since most (if not all) main characters in that field had up until then been males. If we're going to put the whole industry spectra into the picture one might also consider Cate Archer from the No One Lives Forever-games, a tough, street-smart, independent woman who turned the entire James Bond-sexism topsy-turvy. And why not Major Sarah Parker from the first Ground Control, a skilled tactician, bitter realist, who realizes she's perhaps fighting for the wrong cause and questions her own judgement. Like I said earlier, I do not dislike Miss Ryan. I simply want to point out that one should be careful with whom one call "memorable" as the term, like all things, is relative.

Is funcom really going to make a third video game? I am of the camp that thinks it totally blew when April bought the farm.

Neutrality[edit]

This looks like a fan page more than a character description of a notable character in fiction. 3 links to individuals noting april ryan as one of the most memorable characters in computer game history is hardly proof that she is. JFSOCC (talk) 02:11, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability[edit]

There are more than enough sources here to satisfy the general notability guideline. Many reliable sources have directly addressed the character itself, not just the game. Those sources are reliable (Adventure Gamers, GamePro, GameSpot, Gamasutra, Just Adventure, Rock, Paper, Shotgun, a book by Taylor & Francis, and 3 peer-reviewed academic papers), independent of the developer, and it's easy to presume coverage for a best-selling video game in which the protagonist has been widely cited as one of its main attractions.

There was an Underconstruction tag at the top of the page. If some flaw was found like more references for a particular section, it would have been nice to ask for them.

If there are still doubts about the character's notability, the proper process is described and WP:FAILN and it doesn't begin with page blanking; ultimately an AfD nomination is needed to achieve community attention for the removal of verifiable content.
