I've just been playing for the first time with Google earth. Heading straight north from where I live in La Ceiba I passed across this island, which I had not even heard of. Then I came here to find out about it, SqueakBox July 9, 2005 19:15 (UTC)

Independence

I recall a news report from the late 1960s or early 1970s that Cozumel had sought independence from Mexico. Can anyone confirm this historical event? [Just adding my signature, belatedly Slowmover 22:27, 2 March 2006 (UTC)]

Can't recall having seen anything about that in the island's museum, although the century before I think a Spanish or French pirate tried to sell it to the US government..! I'll see if I can find a source and check the facts before posting anything though - can anyone else help? icampbell 20:18, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Suggested link for news from Cozumel

The site referred to above is now www.thisiscozumel.com. This is the only reliable, frequenty updated news site for Cozumel and I suggest it is added again. I'm just wondering why thisiscozumel.com hasn't been added still? It provides some of the best information and news about the island and is a reliable website and also an official Google News source... I'd add it myself, but the edit page says to suggest it in this discussion pages first. Just to note that I added back in the links to thisiscozumel.com and cozumelparks.com, these are both useful resources for readers that had been removed. Geographic statistics

I noticed the area stats are missing on the right hand side of the page. I've been unable to find these but maybe we could add that the island is 14km wide (East-West) by 53km long (North-South)..? Ian in Cozumel.

Link spam

Being a major tourist destination, the Cozumel page is getting hit repeatedly by link spammers. If you've posted what you feel is a legitimate link and it's gone, check to see if it was removed because it was hijacked. If you notice a spam link, check the history to see if it was a legitimate link at one point and revert it. BlueJaeger 02:12, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks to Vsmith for removing many real spam links but you also removed the links cited as sources for a number of pieces of information from the news and information website thisiscozumel.com. I've added them back in along with the Extrenal Link to that site as it is not spam in this case and I believe it qualifies as an external link under Wikipedia guidelines as the site content is "proper in the context of the article (useful, tasteful, informative, factual, etc.)"

Hi BlueJaeger, I think you removed the thisiscozumel.com link again, or it may have been someone else but I find the history hard to follow on these pages. I've added it back in as it is a useful resource for readers and has been on this page for a long time. I also added back in the cozumelparks.com link as this is an official tourism page for the local government's parks foundation and I believe it is also a useful resource.

Sex Traffic

Well, if Cozumel was a Sex tourism destination or the like, it could be informative. but since a) I'm never heard of it having such a reputation and b) since the phrasing seemed somewhat pejorative, I pulled it rather than simply marking it as needing a citation. Hurricane Dean

I just read an article from Reutersstating that Hurricane Dean passed South of Cozumel and there was little damage caused to the reef system. Is this appropriate to put into the section that mentions the other hurricanes? --Excelcleo 02:13, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Name

I am moving the article back to "Cozumel" from the recent move to "Cozumel, Quintana Roo". Cozumel is an island, not a city, town. "Cozumel" is the common name, and predates the establishment of Quintana Roo (indeed predating the establishment of the Republic of Mexico). I agree that this article should remain at Cozumel, at least for now. It's not clear to me from your comments, Supaman89, if you are supporting this, or maintaining that everything should be named Location, State. I did note that a little while ago you moved a whole bunch of articles on Mexican localities to that format, including this one.

As Infrogmation notes, it probably doesn't make sense in general to associate the modern political state of Q.Roo with names or entities (eg pre-Columbian Maya polities) that predate and really are not related to that modern state, particularly when no disambiguation is required. So, the article Palenque should remain there, and not Palenque, Chiapas, similarly Coba and not Coba, Quintana Roo. If the article is about a modern political entity, then using the state to disambiguate would make more sense (but would probably only be necessary to distinguish from other similarly-named places).

However, I would also note that there are at least two, possibly three, distinct articles that could be written about Cozumel.

• One is the island itself, covering its geography, ecology, and (pre-Columbian) history. This could comfortably remain at Cozumel.
• The second is the modern municipio of Cozumel, which administers not only the island but also two enclaves on the mainland's Carribean coast (one the port and mining facility of CALICA, the other the privately-run ecological park Xel-Ha Water Park quite near to the pre-Columbian Maya site of Xelha). This article could properly cover the modern settlements, institutions, demographics, economy, politics, etc in the context of contemporary Mexico, and it is this article which could readily be named Cozumel, Quintana Roo to distinguish it.
• The third possibility would be to break out the pre-Columbian Maya materials into its own article, covering its ethno-historical and archaeological heritage, the 25-or-so precolumbian settlements, etc etc. Thus we might have Cozumel (island), Cozumel, Quintana Roo and Cozumel (or Cozumel (?)), for senses 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

I have often visited Cozumel. I usually think of it as the port city that I reach riding a ferry from Playa del Carmen, with its docks and visiting cruise-ships, hotels, restaurants, parks, reefs, near-by mayan ruins, etc. It is seldom that I mean the whole island or the municipality. Article name (again)

I have reversed the most recent attempt to move this article to Cozumel, Quintana Roo. Nothing has changed since this was discussed last time (see above). Cozumel is still an island, and is still not the same thing as the modern QRoo municipal division, also called 'Cozumel'. And, there is no "city" called Cozumel, per se.

What we need to avoid confusion, is at least two separate articles. One (this one, Cozumel) on the island, which can cover its geography, ecology, occupational history etc, and another —Cozumel, Quintana Roo— on the modern municipio and its constituent settlements. As previously mentioned, the territory administered by the municipio is more than just the physical island. Possibly a third article, on the precolumbian settlements and associations of the island, could be made as well, if we get to the point where we have enough info that a separate article makes sense. There are a dozen or more main Maya archaeological sites on the island itself, so eventually these could be treated individually as well, while the article on the island can also discuss the significance and use of the island (as a whole, or as a 'territory') by the precolumbian Maya; or, break out this Maya topic for the island if we accumulate enough data/info.

Given another couple of days, I may see if I can't set this separation process into effect, by splitting at least the island from the municipio. --cjllw ʘ TALK 01:22, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

I think it's worth adding that Cozumel is just about to mark its first anniversary as "Island of Peace" (see: http://thisiscozumel.com/content/view/992/2/ )

Just not sure which section to include it under. Perhaps under history after the Hurricane 2005 information, any thoughts?

Commercial websites

I've removed reference links to commercial websites with promotional advertising as they fail WP:RS and appear to have been added by a WP:SPA with a likely conflict of interest. Chan Santa Cruz
