Style[edit]

Changed to

"Hodgkin's appeal to representationalism prevents his categorization as an abstract expressionist - although some artists within that movement do execute representational paintings.[citation needed]"

The intention of the change is to preserve the qualification that some abstract expressionists execute representational paintings, while dropping the subsequent judgement about such paintings in line with Wikipedia's core content policies of neutral point of view, no original research and verifiability. The claim that representational paintings by abstract expressionists "are consumed into the expressionistic vortex of their [the artist's] particular psychodrama" is vague, unverifiable and (I would propose) bad English, for the following reasons,

  • The figurative use of "consumed" to mean 'fully engrossed' is not appropriate in an encyclopaedia. In addition consumed used in the figurative sense would usually be followed by the words "with" or "by" as in "consumed with" or "consumed by". The usage of the phrase "consumed in" would be more typical in a sentence such as "The medicine is to be consumed in quantities of 5 or 6 doses a day".
  • The phrase "expressionistic vortex" is figurative at best and would need definition. It cannot be said to be a phrase that is in wide usage and generally understood.
  • The use of the word "psychodrama" is incorrect. According to the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary "psychodrama" has the following meaning

psychodrama
1. An extempore psychotherapeutic play in which a patient acts out his or her feelings and problems with or in front of fellow patients and therapists; psychotherapy involving such a user of drama.
2. A play, film, novel, etc., in which psychological elements are the main interest.

Hodgkin's surfaces[edit]

The article currently states: "Several of his works are on wooden items, such as bread-boards or the tops of old tables, rather than canvas." Actually, for decades, virtually all of his paintings have been done on wood. NSpector 23:53, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hodgkin in interviews[edit]

"Hodgkin is combative in interviews and often denies ideas that he has expressed himself." Well, I think this is something of a mischaracterization. He is often reserved, reticent, and reluctant to engage in "explaining" his paintings or his painting process. But "combative"? Rarely. Nor is he a contrarian, as this statement also suggests. He has regretted some earlier statements he made about his work which he considers glib, and I have read and heard him not wanting to discuss those statements, but I've never heard him deny them. This article is currently tagged as part of Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies. Nothing in the content of the article suggests Hodgkin was L, G, B, or T, or that his work had a particular relevance to such an area.
