Bolding of capped players

[edit]

I bolded the A-interland capped players today (or was it yesterday?) I think this is one of the coolest things on a football team page. Please tell me why it's removed, I've seen it on ZILLIONS of other football team pages, so I just thought let me add them to this page.

Poor translation

[edit]

Many parts of this page look like they are machine-translated from Dutch to English. Or someone has been sleeping through English lessons in high school. --Robert (talk) 19:39, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed it all. It was literally translated from Dutch to English, word by word, which rendered it incomprehensible. Rewriting it was not an option, as it was pov fancruft. Aecis·(away) talk 18:24, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

Hey all,

I think that this page should be named "N.E.C.", and not "N.E.C. Nijmegen". There was a long discussion on the Dutch WP, which involved asking the club themselves and looking to the registry at the Dutch chamber of commerce, and the result was to call them "N.E.C.", as the "N" already stands for Nijmegen. Anoko moonlight (talk) 23:48, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you think the article should be renamed, I recommend you follow the steps outlined at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting potentially controversial moves and get both WikiProject Netherlands and WikiProject Football involved. General guideline on the English-language Wikipedia is to use the most common English-language name. Aecis·(away) talk 00:07, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article was moved anyway so Aecis' excellent advice was disregarded. Sorry but the logo clearly says NEC Nijmegen. Is the official logo of this club illegal? Why consider only one possible argument? (though legitimate among many others) What about a WP dab? What about the clear FACT that the Dutch newspapers almost without exception write NEC without periods? What about the international convention? Let's not adopt tunnel vision at WP! gidonb (talk) 23:38, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

NEC or N.E.C. ?

[edit]

Shouldn't this be "NEC Nijmegen" without the dots? Now I've been living in Amsterdam for a month, and I've never seen the name being indicated as "N.E.C." in the local news. By the way, we do not use dots with PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar, so why should we use them for this one? --Angelo (talk) 22:01, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The club's official website consistently uses "N.E.C." throughout. – PeeJay 14:52, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And while we're on the subject, wasn't it decided not so long ago that this page should be located at N.E.C. (football club)? – PeeJay 14:56, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But the site has apparently no English section, and all recent Google News sources refer to the team as NEC Nijmegen without dots [1]. --Angelo (talk) 15:51, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. My only argument would be that, since Dutch and English use the same alphabet (unlike Greek, Russian or Chinese), there is nothing to translate/transliterate, making irrelevant the fact that the club's website is not in English. – PeeJay 15:54, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If the club website uses N.E.C. exclusively, I don't see the point of moving it. Can't see what the fact that the website doesn't have an English section (even though our article says Dutch/English) has to do with anything really. I'd also tentatively support a move to N.E.C. without the Nijmengen, it's that stupid, lazy habit of always adding the city name to a club name. - fchd (talk) 16:20, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Furthermore, not only does the "N" in "N.E.C." already stand for "Nijmegen", but we also have AZ (football club) and not AZ Alkmaar. – PeeJay 16:37, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Even if it defines itself as "N.E.C." in its official website, you should also keep WP:COMMONNAME in mind, and I think it is much more important if all media and sports sources refer to it as "NEC" without dots. And the spirit of the sports club naming convention was to use the name most popularly used in the English-language world, not just the most official one.
AZ's case is completely different, the media don't use the alternative "AZ Alkmaar" denomination so extensively like they do with "NEC" instead of "N.E.C.". And A in AZ stands for Alkmaar, by the way. --Angelo (talk) 16:43, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was using the "AZ" vs "AZ Alkmaar" case as a reason from removing the "Nijmegen" from this article's title. – PeeJay 16:55, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The club is known and has always been known as NEC. Nijmegen has never been a part of the club name, other than being the N in the abbreviation. I think fans prefer the dots, because it shows how they feel the name should be pronounced: as an abbreviation, not like 'neck'. Aecis·(away) talk 19:49, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Simply going on looks, I prefer' NEC' to 'N.E.C' BUT that doesn't make it right, and the club does appear to use d.o.t.s in its website. And as for Nijmegen in the name - NO NO NO!!! It's simply the English way to (incorrectly) add cities to club names, such as Inter Milan, or Sporting Lisbon. It would be equally wrong for a Dutch/Italian/Portuguese person to desribe English clubs as 'London Arsenal' or 'London Chelsea'. GiantSnowman 22:05, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just to inform you we Italians just refer to those London-based teams as just Arsenal and Chelsea (without the London word) :) - and this is not a problem of how they define themselves in their Dutch website, but how the media and the sources around the English-speaking world refer to that team, and it's NEC (without dots). By the way, even the logo does not use dots in it. --Angelo (talk) 22:20, 20 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nijmegen is actually commonly used as part of the name by the club itself, including in the logo, as well as by the international press. NEC is the clear preference of all press over N.E.C. and also used on the official logo. By WP community decision (see below), NEC Nijmegen is the correct name of the club, 100% identical to the name on the NEC Nijmegen's OFFICIAL logo! gidonb (talk) 03:12, 20 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The name is wrong

[edit]

the team name on this page should be N.E.C. (football club), it stands for Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie. There are instances in Dutch football where the city name is legally represented in the club name, such as VVV-Venlo, MVV Maastricht, NAC Breda, Sparta Rotterdam or most recently Roda JC Kerkrade. In all these instances the clubs were bailed out financially by their respective municipalities, and were therefore forced to include the city name in that of the clubs as a stipulation. Prior to the bailout these clubs competed professionally as VVV, MVV, NAC, Sparta and Roda JC, just to name a few instances where this is the case. This is not the case for AZ, although foreign media address the club as AZ Alkmaar. or with PSV Eindhoven. Eindhoven itself is not really in the name of the club. Same goes for N.E.C. They have had private investors help in times of need, but the club is not known as NEC Nijmegen. (Subzzee (talk) 20:00, 6 August 2014 (UTC))[reply]

The logo clearly says NEC Nijmegen. You fail to explain what is illegal about the official logo of the club! gidonb (talk) 23:32, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

N.E.C. (football club)NEC Nijmegen – This article goes back and forth between "N.E.C (football club)" and "N.E.C. Nijmegen". From my research neither is the correct name for WP. The logo of the club says NEC Nijmegen and Dutch quality press (NRC Handelsblad) exclusively uses NEC rather than N.E.C. Since NRC is only one newspaper (or two with its tiny sibling, NRC Next), I expanded this to the entire "serious" Dutch national press: NRC, Trouw, Volkskrant, FD, RD, ND. All use NEC. I checked the two larger Dutch newspapers, AD and Telegraaf. Still NEC. The large, regional newspaper based in Nijmegen, De Gelderlander, also uses NEC. The international press usually adds Nijmegen,[2][3][4][5][6][7]. Dutch media sometimes add Nijmegen as well. In Holland, it's often the shorter NEC and NAC, rather than NEC Nijmegen or (our current name) NAC Breda that actually does have N.A.C. on the logo! Then who uses N.E.C.? The club on its website. To no avail, they are trying to push folks to spell out each letter rather than saying NEC (pronounced as "neck"). Inconsistently official as the club logo says NEC Nijmegen. Other than the club, notably Fox Sports with the broadcast license writes and pronounces N.E.C. Internationally, however, on Fox Sports dot com, it's also NEC Nijmegen.[8] Some local press uses N.E.C. as well. As with RBC Roosendaal (in progress), PSV Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar, etc, it's perfectly reasonable here to drop the dab for a commonly used, unambiguous name. I look forward to any community decision that would create a stable (and hopefully uncluttered) name for the club! gidonb (talk) 06:59, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GiantSnowman, well put! While the case for "NEC" over "N.E.C." is stronger than the case for "Nijmegen" over the dab "(football club)", I am convinced through my research that both are the optimal phrases to use. I hope this shows also in my intro and would consider it a blessing even if half my proposed change was adopted. Funny thing is that in the past Nijmegen was part of our article title, while the even more obvious "NEC" never was! Maybe it will be wise to block this and similar Dutch football club pages (AZ Alkmaar, PSV Eindhoven, the future RBC Roosendaal) from moving around because these supporters do not actually check our community decisions and thought process! gidonb (talk) 15:47, 1 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The full name of the clubs are "Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie", "Alkmaar Zaanstreek" , and one of their common name has RAS syndrome to become NEC Nijmegen and AZ Alkmaar. To add more inconsistency, this time no one pointing out Wikipedia:Naming conventions (sports teams)? Support NEC (football club) as alternative. Matthew hk (talk) 12:56, 4 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As pointed out above, the website does not have an English-language section, however its web address is nec-nijmegen, the logo says NEC Nijmegen, and while they spell N.E.C. (we all suggest differently), they write in English: "We are always looking for talented players and we got the opportunity to bring a very talented player to N.E.C. Nijmegen." And in Dutch: "Bekijk hier het laatste nieuws van N.E.C. Nijmegen."
Also, PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar were moved or kept at these names after clear community consensus. There are excellent reasons for these names. I'm sure there are good reasons for the current names of the Portuguese clubs as well. NEC Nijmegen is clearly more than a nickname. It's the name on the club's OFFICIAL logo, as recognized by the club among the Dutch quotes above. gidonb (talk) 11:52, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As a note. At the website https://www.nec-nijmegen.nl, the url itself used NEC Nijmegen. the headline/title of the front page read N.E.C. - Wij zijn Rood Groen en Zwart. At the footnote N.E.C. BV 2018. The root of the problem of the RM for football clubs now slanted to WP:ILIKEIT and voting, which some of the voter seem inconsistency on their POV for individual clubs. Matthew hk (talk) 04:26, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, NEC Nijmegen is on the official logo and in the official URL. It gets mentioned time and again by the club, including in English. Since both NEC and NEC Nijmegen are legitimate choices for the title, NEC Nijmegen should have WP's preference as no further disambiguation is needed. Wikipedia would gain another uncluttered title. It would be nice if everyone can come on board in this effort! gidonb (talk) 15:03, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
