2020: Suggested Deletion of Part of a Sentence[edit]

The bold part of the sentence is the suggested deletion:

The St. John's water dog was also an ancestor to the large and gentle Newfoundland, probably through breeding with Rafeiro do Alentejos brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 15th century.

There are three interdependent reasons:

The Newfoundland's full history is still somewhat murky, so this is speculation.
The specifics of what types of other dogs were bred to create retrievers is not discussed. Clarifying this for the Newfoundland is likely beyond the scope of this article, but would make sense in the Newfoundland article.
This fact is not referenced.
