- Hi mate, sorry but I don't get the point "right" ;). The problem here is what display reflects better Ülo Õuna's intentions. I think that, if that is the case, you should contact the editor who uploaded the first image on 2008. If the issue is, however, that the pic is shown laying right for etwiki users, (BTW, the image stands right for me, login in or out) then for some unknown reason the article is linking to the 2008 version of the photo. For your knowledge, I have dealt with the same troubles while uploading images to enwiki. I solved the problem by increasing the size of the pic.--Darius (talk) 22:21, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

ArbCom 2017 election voter message[edit]
Hello, DagosNavy. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Ukraine War in Donbass Timeline[edit]
Hello I'd like to ask if it would be possible for you to condense the information provided on a daily basis: We know Ukraine and Russia are shooting each other daily but that spam is taking away notice from other events that are occurring that are being posted in the timeline.
So please if you could highlight those events as opposed to daily shelling reports or reduce the spam. - Hi there. First of all, I was unable to find any line or even a single word consistent with unsolicited advertising (i.e. Spam). If you were referring instead to "propaganda", it was already discussed here. You can read my opinion there, but i will repost here what Wikipedia guidelines say about what you call propaganda: "reliable sources are not required to be neutral, unbiased, or objective. Sometimes non-neutral sources are the best possible sources for supporting information about the different viewpoints held on a subject."
- Regarding the "daily shelling reports" they only reflect the official, summarized releases from the military of the two (or three) parties in conflict, namely Ukraine, DNR and LNR. If the info is plenty of detail about weaponry, locations and casualties is just because a mere citation of the number of incidents (daily or weekly) would overlook the full picture, such as the use of banned heavy weapons, armoured vehicles or drones, which make the fighting certainly more intense than a simple exchange of small arms fire or rocket propelled grenades.
- Someone (not you) has expressed his concern on the issue of readeability. Just as you would not read a dictionary in the same way you read an essay or a novel, you also would not read a timeline or chronology in the same way you read an ordinary article. The reader of this timelines will search a precise date or week for an specific topic (for example: Motorola's assassination, Battle of Debaltseve, fall of Igor Plotnitsky), he will not read it section by section as you usually do with an article about a particular subject. Ah, I almost forget it; "highlighting" is against Wikipedia's spirit: read the first line of the message below "Military history is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. I appriciate you being bold, but it would be more helpful in this case to discuss why you disagree with consensus rather than unilateral action against consensus with a recent discussion. For the record, I lean MMM but don't really have a dog in this fight, so I'm not taking any of this personally, just pointing you to the fact that this was discussed on the article talk page. - Mountain Meadows Massacre is a proper name, just as the Boston Massacre, Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, Wounded Knee Massacre, Boston Tea Party, American Revolution, American Revolutionary War, American Civil War, Black Hawk War, Fox Wars, American Indian Wars, and Red River Rebellion are all proper names. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive[edit]
G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Mar del Plata images[edit]
Hello! While looking through files uploaded long ago, I stumbled upon File:Lobo-Banquina.jpg and File:CasaMarplatense-2.jpg which you uploaded over a decade ago. I'm sure both were useful at the time they were uploaded, but sadly they now both sit orphaned. Do you have any planned use for them on any encyclopedia article (in any language)? If so, I'm happy to transfer them to Commons so they can be used more broadly. By the way, today was the 1st instance io noted/noticed that "Kubinka database", named “NDR”, or whatever, was down... ("←→", i.e., hacking apparently works both ways, n'case there was a doubt), at first DB inaccessible, then accessible, but not in the strict meaning of the word, and, finally, accessible and readable (today read in Censor.NET mr Avakov stating that the Ukrainian police forces (totalling to ~2,000 persons) shall take Donbass back soon. Riots[edit]
You clearly don't understand how English proper names work - would you put "French revolution" or "English Civil war"? In any case such a move should only be done after proposing it on the talk page, after checking what WP:RS use. And all uses in the article should be updated, not just the one at the start. - Don't worry, I will not change "Spanish Civil War" into "Spanish civil war", nor "Second War World" into "Second war world". The way English proper names work, however, is far from being unambiguous. The examples you (and I) provide are exceptions rather than the rule. If you take a time to read MOS:CAPS, you will notice that, besides books' titles and newspapers' headlines, MoS guidelines show preference for small cases. See also WP:TITLEFORMAT. Template deletion[edit]
Hi, mate,
There is (an ongoing?) discussion on keeping or deleting the the map on the war (see the section on the page); as for me: haven't figured it out (in/for years, by now, as it appears) how to incorporate this into all TWD articles; this (the map, I mean) can be cut down into smaller size, to depict only the war zone; some larger (in amount of letters, io mean, can be reduced to “mouse over function”); any way any thoughts are welcome!—Toivo (talk) 13:08, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

- Why so "narrow-mindedly", someone's elephants (Punic), horses (Napoleone, Budyoni, etc.), even pigeons (ISIZ' pigeons (black) attack on, say USS' white pigeons) "love" spring; as for the template in question, the basis stands (and so does the principle of creating media this way; besides, have a copy of this in m'PC (U see, all these locations use real lat/long data)), takes only some³ time, software, knowledge and willingness.—Pietadè (talk) 12:42, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Toivo, sorry for my belated response, very busy here in day-by-day life. The best general in history was (IMHO since my childhood) old Hannibal; his elephants crossing the Alps are however among the best soldiers (BTW, only one of them, Surus, survived); same thing for Napoleon and his horses. Today's politicians and military chiefs are not certainly the best living animals on earth... :)

Copied it to my subpage, currently, using 2560×1440 monitor, not too large. ;-)
Currently it seems that the map itself is positioned lower (this can be changed by changing the module, or, better, creating a new one), than the points. Concerning a new page I created[edit]
Dear Darius
After viewing several pages on Bosnia war, and some pages refering to the Rapid Reaction Force settled in 1995 in Sarajevo, without correct link to the subject, I have taken the initiative of creating a page dedicated to this subject.

It is only a draft, I think it must be improved, but I do think the subject is important enought to be detailled, and I didn't found any other wikipedia source on it.

- @BihacVet: - Hi mate, I believe an article about the Rapid Reaction Force is absolutely essential to WP, especially to Military History WikiProject. The RRF had the distinctive feature of being an all-European, full-combat force entirely assembled outside NATO command arrangements. Another peculiarity is that during their deployment, the force was supported by German aircraft in their role of electronic surveillance, in what became the first Luftwaffe combat involvement since WWII.
- I partially disagree with the reviewer of your draft page. His basic mistake is to intermingle RRF, an independent combat-ready force as mentioned above, with the peacekeeping UNPROFOR (as you know far better than me), even if the RRF was established by UN authorization to protect the peacekeepers around Sarajevo. IMHO, the RRF is quite notable to have an article of their own. (See WP:NOTABILITY).
- On the other hand, I am convinced that if you add more details on the force actions (shelling of Serbian positions before Deliberate Force, actions during Deliberate Force, Serbian accusations of war crimes, Luftwaffe role et alia), an improved structure (a lede, lead or intro on the fundamental facts plus a "Context" or "Background" section introducing the reader to the military and political situation of Bosnia in 1995 - See WP:PYRAMID) and printed, published tertiary sources, along with a major copyedit, there would be no objections to the creation of this new, badly needed article about the Bosnian War.

@DagosNavy : Dear Darius,
Thank you very much for your support, mate ! I agree with you concerning the fact that the subject deserves a specific page. One of the main motives would be that there is many references about this operation without correct link (some links pointed on the generic term RRF). I think that the reason this draft has been rejected is that the draft, at the actual stage of developpement, is not strong enought. The good thing is that the subject is interesting and presents a lot of interest in WP. As I have a job and 3 young kids, I am not able to dedicate a lot of time in it each week. Therefore, I think the best next actions would be :
- developp the draft (thank you for the advices, I agree with them)
- after a strong improvement of the draft article, ask for support for other contributors (maybe Peacemake67)
- and then, re-submit it again

In the article, Timeline of the War in Donbass (2020), I noticed that it had not been updated since June 24th. So, I put in additions to the page with sources, in events which resulted in the death of a combatant or civilian. I also properly sourced the material, and I put multiple sources. Because of this, I would like to ask for further clarification of what violated the rules of this page, or Wikipedia, and why it was taken town, giving me this warning

Battle of Paštrik[edit]
If there is a problem with the outcome of the battle that I edited in, please let us discuss it on talk page (or here). Sources are on my side, and I could not come to consensus with other users who simply ignored what majority of sources, some scholar, have to say. No, it's not original research, I put forward sources that say that KLA did not meet its objectives. I saw you also reverted back the casualties section (back to version which was not supported by sources and I already explained this in detail on my talk page to admin who had no common courtesy to respond [3]). No, not my second warning, first one was for another article [4] until a person who gave me that warning reverted that article back to my version - and up until today that version remains [5].
As for Battle of Paštrik, you are simply reverting back to other users versions, not even removing or replacing sources who actually back my outcome of the battle. While doing so, you also deleted one source.

- Sorry for repeating the edit war warning, but your attitude was the same, regardless of the article in discussion. My message was related to the Battle of Paštrik.
- There are a couple of problems with the first cited source (Rebecca Grant's article). First of all, this is a revisionist account of the War in Kosovo, since she is writing about "myths". No major trouble with that, but this implies that there is a mainstream, established opinion among specialists, so her work represents a minority point of view, so using this source without counterbalance is giving a marginal theory undue weight. Second point regarding Grant: her five point (or myth #5) doesn't mention that NATO or the KLA were defeated in operation arrow anywhere. She simply claims that while some areas changed hands, no major gains were claimed by the KLA. what is reflected by the body of the WP article, citing other sources. Grants points out not to the outcome of the KLA offensive in general, which gained a foothole on the strategic Mount Paštrik after all, but in the specific goal of making Serb artillery, vehicles and tanks more vulnerable to NATO aircraft. Even so still there were considerable Serb losses during the offensive. Too little to claim that the overall operation was a complete failure, lest to say a Yugoslav victory. The other website (in Croatian) just makes an strategic analysis of the air campaign as a whole, with no reference to Paštrik itself. Perrit holds that same argument that Grant; the goal of luring major Serb ground forces into a NATO hunting area was not achieved. The other source cites Pentagon spokesman K. H. Bacon remarks: “In Mount Pastrik, the KLA failed to make significant inroads. They're in Kosovo, but they're pinned down." which falls short of acknowledge a defeat or a complete failure. Following these authors, I'am tempted to replace "NATO/KLA defeat" for "NATO/KLA operational failure". There is, however, a good argument for the supporters of the S-word (Stalemate); the operation was never suspended by NATO or the KLA, it was still ongoing by the time of the Kumanovo Agreement. Other two contemporary sources (here and here) also report that the Serbs lost key border locations (Planeja, Bucane and Ljumbrada) and large stretches of the border area northwest of Prizren. Nevertheless, in disputed cases like this, is usual to refer the infobox entry "result" to an "Assessment" or "Aftermath" section by a link, in order to avoid further controversy. - My "attitude" was about the facts and those articles over which I clashed with others remain unchanged and more importantly factual.
- I would not call her a revisionist or minority author and she did not mention KLA got "defeated" but "creamed", so I put better wording. They gained a foothole and it's not much considering KLA goal was to penetrate kilometers and kilometers deep inside Serbia. And what were those considerable Serb casualties during this offensive? I already answered that question and it's in my edit of article in question. Page 201 of the Croatian article clearly mentions "Operation Arrow" and Mount Paštrik. Yes "the KLA failed to make significant inroads" especially if their goal was to penetrate kilometers deep, like I mentioned. In the end I would be fine with outcome "NATO/KLA operational failure", because that is what it was. I would not take this Guardian article as a reliable source. The other source says in the beginning "KLA failed to achieve all of their objectives". I would not call those stretches "large". Personally, I see more arguments that operation failed, so I'll go with your proposition "NATO/KLA operational failure" to be edited as the end result. Peervalaa (talk) 14:54, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

- "NATO/KLA operational failure" was not my proposed solution, but what I exactly wrote is "I'am tempted to replace "NATO/KLA defeat" for "NATO/KLA operational failure". My proposal was actually to follow WP guidelines by linking the entry for "result" to the section where the assessment about the final outcome is analyzed in deep based upon the available reliable sources.
- You can't cherry pickering sources by determining whether they or what parts of them are reliable or not at your behest. If a source say "large", the thing is definitely large; our personal judgement doesn't matter here.----Darius (talk) 16:21, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

- Hi Shane, thanks for your appreciation, and kudos to you for your YouTube channel, I' am already a frequent visitor there, and I have suscribed sometime ago!. The image on the "Operation Conservation" infobox is also taken from your channel, thanks a lot! Regarding WP issues, I guess you should try to recover the original passwords instead of creating multiple accounts, this is an advised-against practice. I remember that you were a very useful and active editor of Troubles-related articles as "TommySocialist", it's a pity if you can't recover this account. I have no time, no interest in becoming administrator. Don´t worry about his major clean up on the "Balcombe Street Gang"; it is in line with Wikipedia policies and guidelines, specially those related to sources and citations. Wow, I just seen the image on the Operation Conservation article for the first time that's great, the article is a fascinating British/IRA engagement & a great read on here. - I'm not going to waste time discussing anything with sockpuppets, but I'll explain for the benefit of DagosNavy.
- The Balcombe Street Gang are four living people. As such, the article is subject to WP:BLP specifically WP:BLPCRIME which says that a living person (any member of the Balcombe Street Gang) accused of a crime is innocent until proven guillty. As detailed at Talk:Balcombe Street Gang#Significant BLP issues with this article, the inclusion of a long list of incidents for which the Balcombe Street Gang have not been convicted is not acceptable. An author saying they were responsible for any incident(s) is irrelevant, as I have proven on at least one occasion an author has said they were responsible for a particular incident despite them being acquitted for that particular incident. Incidents fall into one of the following categories.
- Incidents the Balcombe Street Gang were never charged with.
- Incidents the Balcombe Street Gang were never charged with, but admitted responsibility for at trial (Guildford/Woolwich)
- Incidents the Balcombe Street Gang were charged with, but charges were dropped before the trial
- Incidents the Balcombe Street Gang were charged with, but acquitted at trial (according to a reference, they were acquitted on 26 charges out of the 100 total)
- Incidents the Balcombe Street Gang were charged with, and convicted of at trial
- As the talk page shows, I have done my best to discover which incident falls into which category and can be included, but it is difficult to find an exact list of what they were actually convicted of. - It's no problem. Just in case you haven't looked too closely into the sockpuppet's claims, first of all Tdv123's block log shows they were indefinitely blocked for copyright violations, then had their talk page access revoked for posting copyright violations there while blocked. Then TommySocialist's block log shows a further short block for copyright violations, then an indefinite block for sockpuppetry a few days later. There is no confusion regarding lost passwords, their current situation is 100% caused by block evasion. Thanks for the edits, I wouldn't have chased up the online article if you hadn't. I'm going to add something about the MTBs in the Background or Prelude (why they were there, tactics etc) to justify 3rd level headers and carry on untangling the Aftermath etc. Pope is surprisingly modern in remembering that the Italians were there and giving the gist of their version of the action, not bad for 1950. Hi I saw your page and thought you might be interested in what I'm up to here on Wikipedia. I'm still a bit of a newbie to the whole article creation process but I'm all about trying to get pages for some of the forgotten Irish Republicans. After many many months I've been able to get a couple of pages published: Eoin McNamee (Irish republican) (my page was completely changed...except for the last line), Thomas Harte (Irish Republican) and Patrick McGrath (Irish Republican).
I've just submitted two more pages: Seamus Woods and Jack McNeela (Irish Republican). When you get a chance please take a look at them and let me know what you think...I've always tried to keep a very neutral tone.
Im now going to work on the two remaining men who died on hunger strikes who don't have pages - Joe Whitty (1923) and Andy O'Sullivan (1923). Very little info exists on these men.

William Dickson[edit]
Hi Darius, I see you have added some sources to the Dickson article. I wonder if you could tell me a little bit about the Howgego source, what does it say about Dickson?
I can see most of the first Berhardson quote, and I think that source falls a little short of WP:SIGCOV. Am I right in thinking the mention of Dickson on p.191 is just those two sentences and that 195 is just mentioning him as being present in the colony?
Just checking this because if there are a couple of paragraphs on Dickson anywhere, then the AfD is unnecessary.

- Un gusto. I have to acknowledge that Howgego makes only a passing mention of our dear Dickson, so no significant coverage there. I found, however, a long comment and review of Dickson's log in Tesler (pp. 250 and ff.) and a short but significative statement on his diary in Caillet-Bois. I guess there is a substantial coverage of Dickson's role in the islands' colonization in both authors, especially in Tesler's analysis of the storekeeper's log.----Darius (talk) 23:03, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

- Ok, so the Tesler reference to the diary is a longish paragraph? If he also discusses Dickson being given the flag and mentions his death (from memory he does both those things) then that might be WP:SIGCOV. I've seen WCM argue that Tesler is not a reliable source in various places, and with some justification, but it might be valid for notability if we consider him an opinionated source.

- Tesler is basically a 1970s revisionist, and considers Rivero a "patriot". Nevertheless, our concern here is notability, and his treatment of Dickson's issue seems to be quite substantial (an unbiased). I am open, however, to remove Tesler as a source if there is consensus that he is not reliable. Yup, he mentions both the flag issue and his murder. Tesler also describes the circumstances leading to the Gaucho Murders by following Dickson's timeline, and quoting (and commenting) his log on several occasions from page 250 to page 254 at least. In the page 320 Tesler also cites (and quotes) a letter he wrote to Vernet in January, reporting the situation at Port Louis after the British landing.

- I wouldn't worry about removing the source. I suspect it will get removed at some point, but I checked the RS noticeboard and there appears to be no discussion of Tesler there so you are within your rights to add it. I will link this discussion on the RfC and withdraw it.

- Thanks a lot for withdrawing the AfD proposal, I guess Tesler treatment of Dickson's log is enough for notability. Just in case somebody come out in the near future claiming that Tesler is a NR source, Caillet Bois et alia make a similar analysis (from a quite different point of view) of Dickson and his diary.

Argentine revisionist sources were acknowledged as unreliable by Arbcom following the Argentine history case. There are also a couple of threads at WP:RSN that discuss their unreliability. I think it best if we use Ricardo Caillet-Bois or even Ernesto Fitte. Whilst members of the National Academy naturally express a pro-Argentine bias, they respect standards of academic accuracy. Two Irish Republican pages[edit]
Hi Darius - back in April you were kind enough to look at a page I was trying to get approved. Since then I've gotten a few approved and now have two more...I may give up after this!
The pages on Joe Whitty and Seamus Woods were not approved and I've redone them both. The page on Whitty was difficult to find info on the 19 year old independent hunger striker. Whitty is the last of the 22 Irish men who died on hunger strike in the 20th century without a page.
The Seamus Woods story was far easier to redo as he was a major leader in the IRA and Free State army.
If you have a chance could you please take a look at the two pages and let me know what you think?

- @Palisades1: Hi. First of all, congrats for your good work on Irish Republican bios, I am glad that a number of them have been finally approved. Regarding the two drafts you are about to submit, I was taking a look, and this is what I can say:
- Seamus Woods: As you said, notability is not an issue, since Woods was a major anti-treaty IRA figure. The draft in its current status is well sourced, with a majority of bibliographical citations and two from well-known Irish newspapers, so regarding references the business is done (IMHO).
- If you ask me about what changes I would introduce, I would say that the headings should be more concise. For example, the first heading could read just "Background", its scope being from early life to 1921. I found something interesting for you in order to add content to this section: try here. The book is "The Men Will Talk to Me: Ernie O’Malley’s Interviews with the Northern Divisions", a collection of interviews with the leaders of the northern brigades at the time. The second heading (shortened to "Northern Ireland Third Division") can include Woods' activities from March 1922 to internment. There should be more info (even if obvious) on Woods actitude towards partition. Third heading can read just "Collapse of Northern IRA" (the paragraph from the killing of Collins to the hunger strike on HMS Argenta), and fourth and last simply "Later life", including his service on the Free State army, retirement and his death in 1978.
- Joseph Witty: While not a lose cause, I found hard to defend notability. Maybe helpful a source to stress the fact that he was (I guess) the youngest Republican who died in a hunger strike, or to reflect in the lede the Free State "news embargo" at the time of Whitty death. I have a couple of books whose subject is the Irish Civil War, and, as the rest of authors, there are just passing mentions of Woods and no mention at all in the case of Whitty. I found that he was a native of Wexford. This bio is badly needed of further sources, consider the use of newspapers files.
