Hi

I pulled out the deleted sections and placed them in my user subpage here to start work on the refs. I'll do what I can to help out with some of the drudge work. Feel free to edit at will when you find the time. No pressure. I can't get wikilink to work for a subpage. — Becksguy (talk) 23:03, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Need some advice and you seem to know your way around Wiki. I reverted a spammer on Steel Magnolias and he responded with insults and vandalised my user page. I reported the incident to AiV, he got a warning about spam (not vandalising my page). Should I have taken this somewhere else? I am a big boy, and this isnt the first time I run across being called "fag" (though I don't want it getting around I was on Steel Magnolias page) but I want advice on what I should do next time. Thanks Jacksinterweb (talk) 00:18, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a specific warning addressing the issue on their talk. Anon IP's and registered users are handled a bit different; many feel and I concur that engaging anonymous vandalism beyond simply Revert, Block, Ignore is a waste of time and resources. I've gotten more comfortable with the process myself; revert the damage, (always) warn the user on their talk and if they have a pattern of vandalism then report to AiV. AiV, by the way, is sadly busy, so you adding specific warnings against personal attacks, in this case, is the key so that admin can see who warned about what and when. Documentation is key just like in real world. Many editors simply revert vandalism and don't do the next steps, the result of this is often a vandal will get the first warning after a lot of damage and the AiV folks like to see a good faith effort. This means that only after they are warned it's considered more than a problem, multiple warnings and still they vandalize? Then blocking may be in order. In all of this it's best to keep cool and try not to take it personal even when it sure feels like it. They may get their kicks from winding you up so don't give them that victory. The main difference with registered users is that they have more personally invested and aren't keen on having their account blocked. As for the Steel Magnolias page it's in your history as well as the article history already so too late; if called on it you can insist you thought it was a heavy metal band. Benjiboi 01:07, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I did all the usual (revert, warning tag, didn't feed the troll, reported) I thought I might have gone to the wrong place. Insults don't bother me, I was a bit surprised that after the Admin reverted the "fag" comment on my page he then gave Anon a warning to not spam my page. Thanks again for your input (and for the Steel Magnolias cover story...now if I can just find a plausible story for Mildred Pierce). Jacksinterweb (talk) 02:37, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think you did the right thing, I suggest following up with the editor who reverted the fag blanking and (nicely) bringing up the you were a little surprized the personal attacks didn't seem to get mentioned. As for Mildred Pierce you can always say you thought it was this model or stripper (and you were ever so disappointed). Benjiboi 02:41, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you're willing could you address the talk page comments they have left. Personally I fell they should be stricken and the user should try posting again without all the pointy language and accusations. Building turf battles isn't helping building articles. to do:

  1. . Link biblio articles to online sources if any avail.
  2. . Finish Bagemihl ref overhaul on mammals, then do same for insects, invertebrates etc (birds done).
  3. . Convert other refs on Birds to biblio format, then do same for mammals, invertebrates etc.
  4. . Recheck formatting, links for major plot flaws
  5. . Investigate content in template issues and possible solutions.

Done. Benjiboi

gummy bear move

Hey, regarding the Gummy Bear move, I did look for the move tab, but it was not there. If you go to the current Gummy Bear page it's still not there (if it redirects you, be sure to click back to the correct one) other than that I don't have any idea how to fix it, or even how to contact an admin for that matter. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Candycane 2.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Candycane 2.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 20:50, 15 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't scold me for removing categories that are not appropriate and claim that what I did was vandalism and then do the same exact thing I did. 75.34.52.63 (talk) 20:36, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize if you felt I was scolding you, I reverted your deletion of several categories from the article which seemed to be valid categories and in the edit summary I suggested you could take up the issue on the article's talk page if you disagreed. You then added category Atheism which I removed as nothing in the article seems to warrant its inclusion which, again, I noted in the edit summary and on your talk page. We are here to build good articles and working together is part of that. You may consider adding some explanation in your edit summaries so other editors have an understanding of what you're thinking. Benjiboi 20:42, 16 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cher references

Hi. You removed a {{refimprove}} tag from the Cher article, stating in the edit summary "removing tag article seems to have dozens of refs unless my eyes are playing tricks n me." I put that tag in place of the one that was already on the article, which was the {{citations missing}} tag. That one was erroneous, because there are references present, as you pointed out in your edit summary, however, there are quite a few facts and quotes in the article which aren't referenced, and need to be. I am returning the refimprove tag, and have tagged points in the article which need to be referenced. Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 01:44, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, you may find that as the article does have plenty of refs (even though it needs some) the tag gets removed again. An alternative may be to use section tags or simply pick the ten most dubious items and fact tag those. Good luck! Benjiboi 01:47, 17 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Living people category removal Living people category removal

Hi, an editor has removed the category living people from a BLP and I'm wondering if I missed something and that category is no longer valid? The category talk makes no mention so am I missing something here? Benjiboi 01:59, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

It looks like it might be an isolated incident as the category is untouched in many of their other edits. Will follow up if there is anything more to it. Benjiboi 02:05, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Report to WP:AIV (re: 172.189.30.254)

May I answer your question [2] with another question? If so, how long of a block do you feel 172.189.30.254 (talk · contribs) should have received? --Kralizec! (talk) 00:44, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

12-24 hours? 15 minutes seems pretty meaningless and this edit seems to demonstrate user has an advanced knowledge of wikipedia including templates. If "sneaky vandals" have their own category I would nominate this one to go into it. Benjiboi 01:55, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia's official policy on blocking states that blocks are used to protect the project from disruption, not to punish users. Since the IP in question vandalized zero articles are their block expired, it would appear that blocking for 15 minutes worked perfectly. --Kralizec! (talk) 14:24, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know what's sad, Benjiboi? Had you or I made those ridiculous edits, we'd be blocked for at least a few days. Maybe we should start editing as IPs. ;-( Jeffpw (talk) 14:32, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Had either of you made those two edits and been reported to WP:AIV, I would have absolutely declined to block. While jumping straight to a {{uw-bv}} warning may be questionable-but-allowed with an anonymous editor, doing so with registered editors who have a clean edit history would fly in the face of WP:AGF. To be honest, I doubt you would have received much more than a {{uw-test1}} or {{uw-error2}} warning, so I fail to see what you hope to gain by making snarky comments about an admin who is actually on your side. --Kralizec! (talk) 19:18, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
lol. I have to agree, whether we're on the side of snarky sodomites on not I did learn something about the nature of blocks. I used {{uw-bv}} because that's exactly what those little gems looked like. Regardless I appreciate your time on this and wish you the best of the best during the solstice. Lead/lede

Hey Benjiboi, I'm curious: why do you spell the intro section of an article "lede" rather than "lead"? :) Aleta (Sing) 21:55, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's the new spelling, honey. Surely if the Times is doing it, it has to be correct. Jeffpw (talk) 21:59, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Lol. Part of it is probably that I'm a miserable speller so lede is harder to mess up than lead and the other part is clarity lede is always the intro to an article whereas lead can be mistaken depending on context and those reading. I probably go it from this but I'm not sure. It also could be from one too many sips of holiday cheer. Benjiboi 22:04, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting to see both of those, Jeff & Benji. I didn't realize it had such a historical usage, and it hit my radar as being like "rite", "u" or other cutesy spellings which tend to get on my nerves. I've learned something... but I'll still spell it "lead" myself.  ;-P Aleta (Sing) 22:13, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You'll not get a job at the Times with that attitude! lol. Benjiboi 22:15, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
