WikiProject Rock music invitation[edit]
Hello WikiProject Alternative music member.
WikiProject Alternative music, in my eyes, has proved to be successful "improving the encyclopaedic coverage of articles relating to alternative rock", and improving their quality as well. One specific example I have witnessed is The Smashing Pumpkins article. The page has gone from a mediocre work, to GA status, to FA nomination. Only appropriate, as the Pumpkins are undeniably one of the most influential alternative rock bands on the 1990's and beyond.
This is the stuff I wish to achieve with the somewhat recently ressurected WikiProject Rock music. I hope to also attract attention to rock music articles of all sorts, and hopefully change some to GA or FA status. I invite you to come join us, and not only be a member of alternative Wikipedians, but the rockin' ones as well.

AIV[edit]
Thank you for making a report on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators are generally only able to block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. The reported user has not yet been blocked because it appears this has not occurred yet. interactions with Gardener of Geda[edit]
Doktor Who, I noticed that you posted to Gardener of Geda's talk page pointing out a personal attack posted on eir user page. It seems that right now Gardener of Geda is likely to interpret such actions as stalking, regardless of whether that is your intention. I recommend that for the moment you back off from interactions with Gardener of Geda. - Am I correct in thinking that you are claiming that Mistaken Memories... uses music from On Land instead of from Music for Airports? I don't consider your first removal of the item to be vandalism, although you should always use an edit summary, especially when removing text. Instead of reverting a second time, I would recommend discussing the issue on the talk page. I see that you posted something about this on the talk page, but it took me a few minutes to understand what you wrote there.
- I don't have access to Mistaken Memories..., but the Rykodisc site states that the video uses music from both albums. If so, then it is not inappropriate to have the item on Music for Airports, although it might be better to have a shorter mention on both pages and maybe a stub article for Mistaken Memories... itself indicating that it uses music from both. I think you'll find that numerous editors have had problems understanding you and your various suspected sockpuppet accounts - which is not surprising seeing as they all seem to have a habit of mis-spelling the exactly same words in exactly the same way, when making exactly the same sorts of comments, on exactly the same articles. I don't care if you call yourself Sky-surfer, Brian_G._Wilson or Doktor Who; you're certainly not fooling anyone in that regard - so best you calm down, stop the hysterics and personal attacks and comply with Wikipedia policies and guidelines. - Hello Dr Who... in case you haven't seen it yet, I thought you'd want to know that GP has posted a report on these pages:
- Although the RFC specifically names you, he also complains that Cricket and Milo and me, plus two other users I have had no interactions with, Sky-Surfer and Brian G. Wilson, are all sock-puppets of each other.
- So far, the RFC has not been certified, so no response or other action is needed. If you are asked to respond at some point, it would be a good idea to consult with other editors first, to make sure your English comes across as you intend in your response.
- I recommend that you avoid replying to any communications from GP about you. Whatever he says about you, don't take his comments personally. If you are editing an article and he makes a comment about the article that needs a reply so the editing can continue, just stick to the article topic only and ignore anything personal he says about you. Remember that his problems are his problems, not yours. It doesn't matter what he thinks about you. Don't let him make you angry, just let it go. I like most of music, including heavy metal, punk, jazz, classical music, world music... I'm not a fanatic of a genre, therefore I can't understand the dozens of fanatics that are here and that ignore even the most elementary rules of semeiotics. I can't take care of their feelings. Many words used by young people are just slang, it happens everywhere. The WP:3RR guide wants to see some other editors doing those reverts to prove consensus, so tommorrow or whenever, I should be next to do one or two reverts along with Parzifal (or Cricket if he's willing). an FYI for you[edit]
Thought you would like to know...as an active member of the Pink Floyd project. Currently a rather arrogant POV editor (with VERY poor writing skills) has attempted a hijack of the Led Zeppelin article. The editor(editing as an IP) has been rv'd and the article temporarily semi-protected. He seems to have set his sights (perhaps as a vendetta) on purging the current FA status'd Pink Floyd article and reducing it to a fancruft page similar to his attempts on the LZ article. I have 2 admins watching over him but it will take due diligence by regular editors to maintain the current status of these "target" articles. The editor attempted to blank most of the Pink Floyd lead-in section which I rv'd. Perhaps you could rally some of the regular Pink Floyd editors/project members to try and quell any of the pending "quality kill" that the article may be facing. - Hi 156.34.142.110, Dr. Who is a music researcher, so please ask him music questions. IMHO, it's ok for Dr. Who to quietly help make consensed edits at Led Zeppelin, but please don't ask him to take a lead in content struggles that could turn into edit wars for which he might get blamed. Dr. Who has previously been the target of harassment and personal attacks for doing such things. The smaller genres need Dr. Who to keep a low profile, to avoid distractions or worse if you ask him to do things for which he doesn't have expert EFL language skills. Since Led Zeppelin has a zillion fans, and therefore many editors willing to help repel a single IP with POV, I doubt it will be the disaster that you suggest. Yes, I like Led Zeppelin, too. After the belligerent editor was blocked from ruining the LZ article, he seemed to turn his sights on other music articles that have featured status. In his talk:LZ rants he named several FA articles which he personally felt were garbage(they're not...he's just an idiot) and so these articles may become targets of the user if he continues to be blocked from editing Led Zeppelin. I asked 2 admin acquaintances to watch that article so I believe it is safe. But Dume7/IP 71.X may decide to set his sights on destroying a different article, and yesterday he certainly tried by blanking the PF lead-in. I have had brief conversations with Dok in the past about a Pink Floyd related article so I knew him to be a dedicated member of the Pink Floyd project. I wanted to alert him(and a few other active members) of the potential edits to the PF article which would likely result in the article losing it's FA status.(you would easily understand if you read the users edits to the LZ article...they are bad-almost to the point of insulting. A 10 year old child has better writing skills). And Doc in answer to your question...I don't feel Dume7 has a vendetta against PF or the article specifically. Just that it is a music related FA and he thinks it doesn't deserve it because it isn't loaded with POV praising fancruft. He does not feel Wikipedia's policies should be followed and that the articles should be written with more "poetic emotion" and ignore rules like NPOV, citation, no weasel words, no original research....etc. And this sort of "above the law" attitude is causing a lot of problems. The editor has even gone so far as to alter the wording of posts from other users on the LZ discussion page. And should he continue to do this he will likely be blocked. Keep up the good work with the PF project Dok. Hopefully Dharmabum will return to Wiki full time soon. I believe he was dedicated to the Floyd project. But got fed up with all of the other foolishness that goes on around here. I've seen many good and noble editors turn their backs on Wikipedia. Just wanted to let you know that so you would be more comfortable with who was involved in the DP conversation regarding genre. My AGF is that your own AGF has not been stretched too thin from your other 'wiki-troubles'. Above you said you couldn't remember our previous conversation. It was very minor to do with adding a good solo sample to the David Gilmour article box. I thought your suggestions were perfect. I just haven't got around to implementing them yet. - Dok, please honor Davidpdx's request to not post to his user talk page. You may want the same courtesy from others. I know that I do.
- Given that the admins are suspicious of Harvardy, Davidpdx may think he's a good guy for tagging, even if he and GP have gone about it in a disruptive way. Quit while you are ahead. You don't want to get on the wrong side of this situation. That will just help GP.
- As a matter of personal politics, you should want to persuade Davidpdx that he should not emulate or support GP's tendentious actions. One way to do that is to not equate him with GP. Let him back away from confrontation with you. You could politely suggest here, that it's not in his interest to be viewed by the community as being just like GP. Give him a chance to rethink the wisdom of that alignment, independent of his opinion of Harvardy.

Doctor Who logo
Dok, click on the little boxes in the lower right-hand corner of the image and check the fair use rules at Image:Doctor_Who_colorful_diamond_logo.png#Fair use rationale for Doctor Who, History of Doctor Who and Fourth Doctor ("Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia ..."). You'll either need to write a commentary on the BBC's Doctor Who show to accompany the image, or substantially pastiche the image in an image processor. For the latter, you would need to study examples of what amount of change is needed to legally pastiche artwork. Milo 21:46, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

- Er... that's why I made the point about needing to study legal art pastiches. Just changing one letter like that isn't legal, because it's clearly a derivitive of the original work. Could you get away with that on your own web site? Maybe, maybe not, but this is global Wikipedia, and there's big money at stake in maintaining strict copyright legality here. Here's the law on derivitives explained at Wikimedia Commons: Commons:Derivative works. Also see the ok-to-upload determination alogrithm in the sidebar.
- Now, a parody is different. If you parody the image, you probably may use it even though it's a derivitive. The U.S. Supreme Court standard for parody is:
Justice Souter stated that the threshold question involving a parody fair-use defense "is whether a parodic character may reasonably be perceived. ... It is this joinder of reference and ridicule that marks off the author's choice of parody from the other types of comment and criticism that traditionally have had a claim to fair use protection as transformative works." --Parody: Fair Use or Copyright Infringement
- Does changing the "C" to a "K" ridicule the Doctor Who show? I don't see how, so that's probably just a derivitive. However, for example, if you change the the "C" to a "K" and overlay a raspberry tongue somewhere on the image, then it's clearly a ridicule and thus a fair use parody derivitive. Adding the right kind of comical eyeballs and eyebrows mocking a characteristic Doctor Who expression might work also. Milo 03:07, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
- Well, the Doctor Who is a British character, I cannot imagine anything more British than him and his Tardis. My "Doktor", with its "K", may refer to a sort of German-British Doc, that likely the Brits would end up to denigrate or hate, or take as a cool joke; also, that "K" would make me think to "King", or "Key".... In other words, I'd say parodic, definitely.

use of administrator notice board and other procedures[edit]
Hi Doc... I just wanted to check in with you about the comment you added to the notice board after the original incident was archived. I'm not upset about it, no worries, but I do think that was not the correct thing to do. If I had wanted my comment to pop out and be visible there, I would have put it there. But that particular incident is not on the radar any more, so my added comment was only backup in case someone reviews it later as part of some other complaint.
I suggest you take a more precise approach with administrative reporting pages. If you read the information at the top of the admin notice board, it states that those incident reports are only for issues requiring immediate action by an administrator - like what happened with Harvady's page needing protection. The admin notice board can't help with ongoing behavior disputes that require lots of investigation and comments. For that, you'd need something like what Gene tried with his RFC/U. But even one of those would probably not be appropriate, because those are for solving specific disputes when multiple editors have tried and failed.
With Gene, there is not one specific dispute that can be analyzed and decided, it's just his overall bad behavior that's setting you on edge. The most important thing to do is to not write or take any action about him when you feel angry or frustrated. Just ignore his insults and threats. If you can't stand it and you have to do something, instead of writing, put his picture on a punching bag and punch it until you get tired. Then take some deep breaths and decide whether or not you even need to reply.
If he does something that's clearly against the rules and requires and administrator to intervene, then you would need to read the guides to figure out exactly where to place your complaint. But make absolutely sure it's what you want to do. He's very smart and has lots of time to plot and plan and develop lists of links and diffs to make things look different than they are. Is that really how you want to spend your time?
Just let it go, try to laugh about it, and focus on editing articles. If he says somthing that drives you nuts, ignore it and talk to the other editors on that page instead. After a while, it will be obvious to everyone where the trouble is coming from. But if you let him get an emotional response from you, then it will be harder for people to see that the trouble is coming from him.
You might also try checking out this page and contacting some of the people there for help in deciding what to do when you get frustrated: Wikipedia:Editor assistance. There seem to be some very experienced users there offering to help out with problems.
Focus on editing music articles, you're good at that. Forget about Gene Poole. Let him bicker with himself. The only way he can bicker with you is if you let him. --Parzival418 00:33, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
