Thanks[edit]

thanks for reverting the vandal, Jimfbleak 12:24, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

he's now been blocked indefinitely by another admin. Jimfbleak 12:27, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Another thank you: Georgia On My Mind[edit]

Thanks for reminding me that I need to link the U.S. state of Georgia correctly to disambiguate it from the Eurasian country of Georgia. clariosophic 14:56, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Same here! I guess I wouldn't have noticed my mistake otherwise. Thanks! MRasco 17:02, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mirror text?[edit]

In case you haven't noticed, the text on this talk page is inexplicably reversed, reads from right to left instead of left to right, similar to DaVinci's mirror-writing, starting at the end of the "Reports" section above. You might want to consider fixing that, and maybe archiving some of this page because it's getting pretty long. Truthanado 22:18, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The text looks the right way round to me - and others have been leaving messages here without noticing any problem. DuncanHill 22:23, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies ... I wasn't very specific. On the talk page, it looked okay. When I went to edit the page, it showed mirror-text. I see you have removed/archived and the problem still exists in teh archive, at least when I open it to edit using Firefox. Cheers. Truthanado 06:38, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... strange... there is one line of backwards writing in the thread above the reports section - which was deliberate by a new user who was asking me for some help - but I can't see a problem anywhere else (I use Safari on WinXP). DuncanHill 10:22, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:William Golding[edit]

Thank you for the message. The Editor changed the birth month, September to June. So I thought it was vandalism. Sorry if I was wrong. Then what was the appropriate warning for the edit? Regards. Oda Mari (talk) 19:04, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! I noticed. I'm so sorry. I reverted the IP user's vandals. So I think I was careless about the edit details. Why can't I stop making stupid mistakes? (sigh) Anyway sorry and thank you. Oda Mari (talk) 19:14, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the kind word. FYI, I lined on my waring. Oda Mari (talk) 19:27, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia (state) on your mind[edit]

Thanks for the disambig of Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/coordsB. I'd forgotten about Georgia. And I know even with the tool that one took a while. (SEWilco 23:47, 5 October 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Georgia[edit]

Hi DuncanHill, I'm sure it wasn't your intention, but I find your edit summary here to be rather condescending and insulting. You seem to have jumped to the conclusion that an American couldn't possibly have made a simple mistake, but rather must be unaware of the rest of the world. Again, I don't think that it was intentional, but you may want to consider it in the future. We Americans aren't as ignorant as you might think. :) Cheers, faithless (speak) 23:28, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and thanks for fixing my mistake! :) faithless (speak) 23:29, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia[edit]

Thank you; I will fix that. You guys must be efficient at disambiguating to catch it so quickly. I also realized I need to fix pages like Interstate 695 (District of Columbia) so they read "in the District of Columbia" - or maybe "in D.C.". --NE2 11:31, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it; you may have to do a "null edit" to the pages to purge the cache. --NE2 11:34, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you participated in the recent CfD of the category "Homophobia" [1]. It has been re-nominated for deletion, on the same grounds as before, and I was making sure you had an opportunity to present your interpretation of policy on this matter. The discussion can be found here. Best. --Cheeser1 14:39, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fox family of Falmouth[edit]

Thanks for supporting this article, which, it is claimed, lacks notability, despite 24 references, four DNB subjects and an MP.

Perhaps the article should not have buried the most approachable and charming members, who wrote Journals for us, under yards of great grandparents. Someone suggested the Fry family (chocolate) for deletion, recently, so it looks like family history may be targetted by the zeitgeist . . .

Your post at ANI[edit]

I think most admins would commend you for seeking clarification on the proper way to go about things round here. The point being made was that you chose the wrong forum - WP:ANI, when WP:AN is more appropriate. It's not a big deal, just that ANI is more of a workshop for dealing with incidents, while AN has a much broader remit. --Dweller 11:53, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gosh, you do sound down. I think you've been very unfortunate if you feel this way, as most admins I've come across are very helpful and kind. ANI is quite a high-stress board, by its very nature, so you could have come across an unrepresentative sample. There's also probably an element of grumpily assuming that everyone's read the lengthy header at the top of the page, which tries to explain where to post. When I was a newbie, I posted umpteen times to the admins noticeboards before I even realised there was such a header, lol. I might also gently suggest that you have WikiStress anyway, connected with the reason for your post at ANI in the first place, and you're therefore taking a dimmer view of admins' helpfulness than you would if you were your usual self... :-) --Dweller 12:25, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

<taking a deep breath>

  1. No-one would support personal attacks
  2. Post me a personal attack diff/s and I will step in for you, if you like
  3. Not templating the regulars is more of a courtesy thing than a guideline etc. It makes sense, especially for the templates that begin "Welcome..." etc
  4. Leaving aside the specifics of this case, (I can understand you not wishing dialogue with someone you've found unpleasant) with regulars, AGF tells you to assume they know the policies and guidelines, so contraventions have either been a mistake or done on purpose for good reason. Establishing which of these it is, is far better done by proper conversation.
  5. Here's some patronising advice (sorry) when you're WikiStressed, WP:TEA is well-worth re-reading.

Anyway, smile... you're one of the good guys. And I've watched enough movies to know that good ultimately prevails. Except in some horror films, but let's ignore them... it's not Halloween yet. --Dweller 12:43, 16 October 2007 (UTC) Before I became an admin, when I had a problem, I'd often look for help by seeking out an active admin, by looking at recent changes and finding someone who'd done a deletion. Over time, I built up recognition of the names of admins who I found helpful. --Dweller 13:22, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hamfisted attempt to bring cheer[edit]

Hi Duncan. You seemed a little down - perhaps this would cheer you up? Or this or this? Neil  14:25, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes the reminder that "administrators are just ordinary editors", unfortunately, goes both ways. Nobody's perfect. I am sorry that you have lost faith. Please try and bear in mind that there are very few people acting off anything other than best intentions - a lack of experience or competence should not be mixed up with actually wanting to do the wrong thing. I can't really add more than that. Neil  14:38, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The boldness & blocklog of Feline1[edit]

Dear Duncan, further to your comments about me on User:ScienceApologist's page,

with reference to my block for being cheeky to User:Mongvras in the Cornish Language article, which you were a party to, my take on it is that I stepped in after over a week of tedious and damaging edit warring about orthography, with teeny bit of WP:POINT, which, in broad consensus of all the editors involved, produced many much-needed belly laughs and effectively ended the edit war. The editorial consensus always was and remains against Mongvras' partisan edits. I would contend that far from being disruptive, my intervention was actually productive, helping resolve and diffuse the situation.

I was also a year or two ago given a 3RR block when edit warring broke out on the Velikovsky article. In retrospect, I half suspect this was, ironically, due to some earlier incarnation of ScienceApologist and his delightful editing approach. 'Go', on might indeed say, 'figure'.

With regards any silly bickering with teenagers whilst editing pop music articles, I do try to keep this to a minimum these days, but moreover I believe the teenagers generally like it anyway (in fact User:Crestville frankly said as much!).

Probably my least defensible stroppyness was some arguments a couple of years ago on Group 3 element, but we all lose patience occasionally. Moreover I have made solid contributions to several chemistry articles, such as allotrope and key sections of arguably the most central article of all, Periodic Table...

Without (well, actually, with) wanting to blow my own trumpet, I am basically retorting to your personal attack on me by saying: (i) my endeavours as an editor are of a high quality, fact-based and of neutral POV (ii) it takes two to edit war, and although I have at times been sucked into them, it is never something I have sought, unlike some people I could mention... (iii) if the legal process of Britain has any merit at all, you will note that previous convictions are not revealed to prejudice the verdicts when weighing up anything new: any incident should be taken on its own merits. I grow weary of Admins saying "oh, look at Feline1's bad history" and using that as a mandate for cruel and unusual punishments. It is not a valid approach. Some editors might seek to censor things they don't like from their talk pages, or indulge in multiple sock puppets, so as to always appear to present a clean slate to the naive observer. Would it be simpler if i just did the same? Regards, your fellow Brighton resident, --feline1 20:49, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed[edit]

I left a link to WP:CHANGE on that user's page. They just need to follow that process. Hope that helps. - Rjd0060 00:37, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I just left a message telling them they could email me and I would help them set up a new account, but since they are not blocked anymore, there should be no problem. - Rjd0060 00:40, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. I don't know if you saw my comment about that admin on User talk:Carmenelectra but I just said I am not surprised that he was the one to do the block. - Rjd0060 00:47, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At the rate he's going, I'll probably get blocked for it. - Rjd0060 00:50, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have made several reports to ANI and they have all been resolved in what I think is a proper way. Some admins have a huge head. I just nominated myself in RfA last night, and withdrew this morning. LOL. Got some good feedback though. - Rjd0060 00:58, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And IMO, I would prefer to get a level 1 warning than a level 3+ (block warning). Does it really matter? Why do people get so mad for getting a "Welcome to Wikipedia" message? I've had the same problem before, but I didn't get "yelled at" by admin. - Rjd0060 00:59, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with you there. I will definitely be trying another RFA sometime within the next 6 months or so. Some admins are great, while others are .....well.....not. - Rjd0060 01:10, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please help[edit]

Dear Mr. Hill,

First of all, thank you for the welcome letter! I have been a Wikipedia contributor for a short time, and I already have questions. As you may have noticed in my account, I have recently uploaded two documents into Wikipedia (Haider A. Khan, and Theory of Deep Democracy); however, when I try to search for these topics on one of the major search engines (i.e. Yahoo or Google), the links to Wikipedia never come up. Could you please tell me if there is a way to make my entries in Wikipedia available through these search engines. I might have missed a step as I was setting up the entries, but I cannot figure out what I did wrong. Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely, --DenverU 05:22, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

medicine on the Ref Desk[edit]

With regard to your comments at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science#Anomalous hair, would you consider moving them to the talk page of the Ref Desk instead? I have started a discussion thread there; it's not really a good idea to try to slug out questions of appropriateness on the Desk itself. (Discussions on the Desk have a nasty habit of turning into arguments laced with incivility and namecalling which we would all rather avoid.) TenOfAllTrades(talk) 15:56, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, I think that all of the questions that you suggested –
What causes blue eyes? What causes grey hair? Why does alcohol abuse cause liver damage?
– would be legitimate, valid Ref Desk questions. The question that was asked was removed because the poster identified himself as having a particular symptom, and sought a diagnosis for it. If any questions that are simply about medicine are removed, let me know and I'll have words with the parties involved. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 15:59, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So I have blue eyes, what causes this? wouldn't be. DuncanHill 16:05, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You know, you've successfully found a gray area. I'd certainly prefer your first formulation of the question to the second. And obviously a question like My eyes used to be brown but have turned blue, what caused this? would be right out. Unfortunately, those aren't the questions asked, so I can't duck the answer. I'd probably sincerely hope that someone gave a succinct pointer to eye color and left well enough alone from there. I could make an argument that 'blue eyes' aren't an unusual or abnormal condition, and that it therefore wasn't really a 'symptom', nor was the poster seeking a diagnosis. But I agree that it's a messy area open to subjective interpretation.
If the question comes up, I'd welcome the discussion on the Ref Desk talk page. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 16:28, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Carlton jakes[edit]

A tag has been placed on Carlton jakes requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. you are incorrect when you claim that removing speedy tags is against wikipolicy. I was not the original creator, so hangon would have been inappropriate. DuncanHill (talk) 19:27, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I had just written a reply several lines long and posted to this page. However it was lost as you had replied here after replying on my talk page. I cannot be bothered to type it out again. It's SO easy to confuse "Nick mallory" with "DuncanHill", especially when you have already posted to Nick's talk page about this very subject - happens all the time! DuncanHill (talk) 19:44, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, I used Twinkle which automatically sends the notice to the original creator, and secondly I was away from the computer for a time and when I returned I had a message, which I mistakenly assumed was from the original creator. Thirdly, no need for sarcasm. Please adhere to WP:AGF. Hammer1980·talk 19:48, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just like you assumed good faith when accusing me of a breach of wikipolicy? I'm not accusing you of bad faith, just of not bothering to check your facts before making accusations, which is another matter entirely. I only posted to you originally out of a sense of politeness (I was disagreeing with an action of yours), you responded by falsely accusing me of breaking policy. Guess what? I get upset by that! DuncanHill (talk) 19:52, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You originally posted disagreeing with the actions of an admin, asking what you could do about it. I advised you of wiki policy in the process of explaining what you could do, thinking I was talking to the article's creator. I posted in good faith. I didn't falsely accuse you of anything. If I had issued a warning you would have a very valid point, and I would understand you feeling aggrieved. However, I didn't. Good luck with the article.Hammer1980·talk 20:11, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
