Hi, when making edits such as this, please take care to avoid splitting text from references as you did in that edit. 19th century American biography is my normal editing field[edit]

No worries. IMHO your careful statement of connectedness painted you as someone wikipedians could verify (by your stated limited actions). Wikipedians like it when we can see a new contributor is trust-able. Of course, one day you'll run out of elected APS members' articles to which to add statements. Hi there! Thanks for your contributions lately. I just wanted to note that you've been using some sources that are not considered reliable. Generally speaking user-generated sources like Geni, Wikitree, etc should not be used as citations. Primary sources can be used but only in limited cases. Hallo, Thank you for creating this article which I came across while stub-sorting. A few bits of advice:

  • We don't use dates to disambiguate people, except as a last resort where two people have otherwise identical descriptions (see WP:NCPDAB) I moved him to "... (military officer)"; you may have a better suggestion.
  • However he is disambiguated, when you create an article at a disambiguated title you should add a means of getting there from the undisambiguated title - either adding or expanding a hatnote, or adding to a disambiguation page (or sometimes something more complicated). In this case I've expanded the hatnote at George Wall. This helps the reader who's looking for the article (the whole purpose of creating it, after all), and also reduces the risk of some enthusiastic editor carelessly creating a duplicate article.
  • References should show what the source really is. You quoted a chapter from a book. It happens to be made available through a particular website, but that doesn't show us what it is, how reliable it's likely to be, anything about it. I've reformatted your first reference as a ref to a book chapter.
  • You could usefully add a few more categories. Category:American Revolutionary War is enormously broad and not very helpful. At the least, look for a "people ..." category, for a biographical article. I've added a couple, but as I don't know much American history I may have got them wrong and there may be more useful subcategories which could be used. In particular, as his main claim to fame seems to be his involvement in founding a town in Pennsylvania, he needs Category:People from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
  • It's useful to create the talk page, drawing the article to the attention of relevant wikiprojects - you can see how I've done the one for Wall as a basis to copy.

It seems from your user page and your contributions history that you are creating a lot of articles for members of the APS, so this advice may be applicable to many of your creations. If you're creating a whole set of articles it's good to get things right: there's a lot to learn about editing Wikipedia but it's an interesting journey. Happy Editing.

And while I was looking at George Wall I wasn't at all sure whether membership of the APS was anything notable or not (I'm from the other side of the pond), so looked at the American Philosophical Society article and still wasn't clear, so read the APS website, and added a "Membership" section to that page and a note in the lead section - and then found some of the same info rather buried in the "History" section, so removed it from there. I've just looked at one of your most recent article creations Samuel Williams (minister). I see you added him to the disambiguation page at Samuel Williams: well done. But there are a couple of points to make here:

  • You need to add a "References" section and the {{reflist}} template. It happens that if you don't do so the references appear in the right place, at least until anything else is added which should appear after them but will appear before them without {{reflist}} being present. I see that someone has already fixed this article for you, as I note that lots of other editors have fixed your others.
  • You need to add a "DEFAULTSORT" so that he files under "W" not under "S" in categories. I've fixed this article, so you can see how to do it yourself in future.
There is a very easy way to add the DEFAULTSORT (so the article files by surname in lists), and Category:Living people where appropriate, and any birth or death date category: {{subst:L|1882|1984|Brown, Annie}} would create {{DEFAULTSORT:Brown, Annie}}, Category:1882 births and Category:1984 deaths, while {{subst:L|||Smith, Jane}} would create {{DEFAULTSORT:Smith, Jane}}, Category:Living people and Category:Date of birth missing (living people). Lack of death date implies "living" (or you can add "unknown" or "missing" as the death date to suppress this). You get a lot done for a few keystrokes: I think it's a great little template.

I'm a bit disappointed that no-one else has had the helpfulness to point these two things out to you ... or that you haven't noticed the edits being made to your creations and got the message that way either! And then I looked at Frederick William von Marschall where I think APS gets his name wrong! See my talk page note. I was looking to see if you knew about adding redirects from shorter versions of names etc, but opened a can of worms here. Note also that Wikipedia doesn;t use slanted or curly apostrophes/quotes, only straight ones. PamD 21:01, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

And have just played around a bit with Nicholas Wall Nicholas Way: the categories were again a bit odd: try to find categories for people - "Quakers by century" is a category of categories, not one for people. Section headings use lower case except for proper nouns ("Yellow fever" isn't a proper noun), and don't use ampersands or other abbreviations. Just lots of non-obvious things to learn, but if you're producing a lot of articles it's particularly useful to get things right first time to save work for other editors.

Please don't feel that I'm picking on you: having found George Wall with his non-standard disambiguation while stubsorting, I just kept coming across more bits of advice which I could usefully pass on. References section and reflist[edit]

Hallo, please remember to give an article a "References" section and add {{reflist}}. You don't seem to have done so for either of today's creations, Henry Hill (colonial merchant) and John Baynton. It's also helpful to create the DEFAULTSORT so that in categories they file under their surname not their forename. I've sorted these out, and added Henry to Henry Hill (disambiguation), without which readers will struggle to find him.

Notability[edit]

Is membership of the APS considered to confer notability, in the way that for an academic we have "The person has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g., a National Academy of Sciences or the Royal Society) " in WP:NACADEMIC? If not (or even if so, really), then please try to assign each of them to a category such as Category:American physicians (or, better, Category:18th-century American physicians, Category:Physicians from Philadelphia etc) which indicates their field of notability, as well as their APS membership and birth and death date categories. I'm not certain, but based on what I'm reading APS membership does seem to confer a sort of presumption of contemporary notability, if not conveyance. It's not merely social. For a member to be elected, they'd need to meet certain standards before election. These standards would vary based on era, but I'm willing to presume contemporary sources exist for elected members. I've removed the prod and added a multi-paragraph source from 1866 directly detailing the subject from a Boston newspaper. Like User:onel5969, I would like to see more and better sources on some of these creations myself. I urge EMarkel-JoyetAPS to put into draftspace any articles which might need better sourcing (I think earliest society members might need such help).
