Re:Signature[edit]

Hey Falastur, sorry for the delay, haven't had a chance to check my talk for the last few days. When changing your sig, make sure you tick the small box under the signature box. Hope this helps, because I've just checked the sig and it seems to work, the code looks fine too ;) BanRay 17:03, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mate. Yeah, that seems like a good idea, and I have replied as such. I'm actually surprised that the individual articles didn't already exist. Will be a tough ask doing individual division articles for every prior season, but it's probably worth it in the long run. – PeeJay 23:13, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

like i said on the article it would be a good idea and we could posible get a team together and then maybe split it into 3 and each team focus on 1 divison in the prior seasons. I would be happy to help. MotorSportMCMXC (talk) 23:27, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Thewarranty[edit]

Thanks for that comment. Yeah, I was 99% sure he was a vandal, but I didn't want to block immediately - there are all sorts of politically charged "admin stole my right to free speech" type vandals out there, so unless it is going at 100 edits a minute I prefer to warn first! Regards -- Chuq (talk) 13:00, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, no problem. Yeah, in that situation it is clearly that the notice was not put up with good intentions, so removing it is just mopping up the mess left behind - no problem in doing that :) -- Chuq (talk) 13:06, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Championship map[edit]

When I made the Premier League map I tried too do the Championship too, the result can be found here, though it isn't made in the same way as the current Premier League map when the dots and labels are separate. In that sandbox I've taken the locations of the ground the team plays on. I can try to work it out too look like the PL map in some hours — chandler — 17:05, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your results table template[edit]

Unfortunately, the template is not smart enough to automatically decide the background color. We have to inform to Fb r team template when the background should be colored, using the parameter bg. I've already fixed the Southern Football League 2008-09 as example. --ClaudioMB (talk) 20:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MCFC statistics[edit]

I was thinking of getting into a state where it is suitable for featured list nomination. As there are a number of other similar articles which are already featured lists, it shouldn't be too difficult as we can use them as a base. The equivalent list for United recently became a featured list, which served as a motivator for me because now there are more FA/FLs about United than City, and we can't have that, can we? Mostly, getting the article ready for a nomination will involve making sure all the records are referenced, and making sure the article follows the manual of style throughout.

Featured nominations have a bear-pit reputation, but in reality they aren't as intimidating as people sometimes make out. Once you get used to the terminology the sense of intimidation melts away. Featured lists tend to be more straightforward than featured articles too. An irreverent account of the featured article process which is well worth reading is User:Giano/A fool's guide to writing a featured article. Oldelpaso (talk) 09:26, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: UEFA Cup & Champs League updates[edit]

Thanks, mate, still new to it, but figured since I watch the scores from work (I'm in the US), might as well keep myself engaged. Appreciate the help, didn't realize there were so many people trying to update it. That said, I'll do my best in helping and not goofing up the formats. I think I've got past that sort of business. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Edit to FA Cup 2008-09 qualifying rounds[edit]

There is no difference between the two, and I apologise that it seemed like my edit to that article made it look like I was primarily changing the <br>s to <br />s. In actual fact, I was adding the Second Round Qualifying draw at the same time as you were (albeit a bit slower) and when I submitted the edit, there was an edit conflict. Since I had copied the team names directly from the First Round Qualifying results table, I decided to save the version that I had done in order to preserve consistency between the rounds. Hope that's OK. – PeeJay 12:37, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Football League 2008-09[edit]

Could you update the current results table. 03md (talk) 10:21, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers. Do you and PeeJay need any help with your Football League project? I'm happy to help. 03md (talk) 12:04, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will make a start on creating the articles for all the years of the "Football League" format (2004-05 onwards) and see how I go. What needs to be left on the main page for each season? 03md (talk) 16:19, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you have a look at this article and see what you think. 03md (talk) 19:49, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have made the infobox but need some help with the teams map. 03md (talk) 09:56, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have you created any more football league pages or those maps? 03md (talk) 21:50, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good work with the results for Football League Championship 2007-08. How are the other leagues coming along? I held off until I saw how you were getting on. 03md (talk) 21:47, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Issue with Peanut4[edit]

{{help me}} Yes, you are right. I am new to wikipedia. I only joined when the fourth round of matches was played. I wanted to talk to him privately but I dont know how to. I was not just referring to the 2 things mentioned. He edited a lot of my stuff since the fourth round and removed most of what I wrote about the 6th Round Draw. Is there any way on Wikipedia where I can message him privately? I was finding it but I cannot find it, so I had to use the history. Syjytg (talk) 14:59, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please only use {{helpme}} on your own talkpage. Thanks. //roux   15:03, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

COMS[edit]

Yes,I work there!

Richard Martin (footballer)[edit]

When I created the AfD, I did put the box on the page although someone may have removed it, I didn't go back and check in the days after I'd done it. And I cant help that it was deleted early, it was an admin that decided to do that. Thanks, BigDom 14:14, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to change the structure of the template, but I'm fairly sure that all navboxes should now be using the {{navbox}} style. I just copied the style from the Man Utd navbox and transplanted the City-related articles from the old City navbox. I hope I didn't lose any articles in the process. But like I say, if you think that links need to be moved around, please do. – PeeJay 21:26, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The other advantage to using the navbox template is that the navbox is now collapsible, which can only be a good thing. – PeeJay 21:33, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ardwick Athletic[edit]

Cheers for the comment. I was aware of City's previous existence as Ardwick, however I was querying whether or not they'd ever been known as Ardwick Athletic, which I'd never seen mentioned anywhere in any source...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 08:37, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's cool. Cheers! Oh, and best of luck against MU :-) -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 11:53, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Early Blues[edit]

The short answer is that even if you shell out for books it gets incredibly difficult to obtain anything other than statistical information. My complete list of football related books is at User:Oldelpaso/Sources. The one man whose work is of inestimable value when it comes to all things City is Gary James. His books are consistently excellent and quite scholarly. The only problem is that a lot of his books are out of print, and in several cases second-hand copies go for way in excess of the original price. Manchester: The Greatest City is the definitive history of the club. Manchester City: The Complete Record has lineups for every game in every season, profiles of every player with more than 200 appearances plus several more of historic importance, and every manager. The Big Book of City is meant as a lighter read, but even so it contains profiles of every goalkeeper to make a League appearance. Manchester: A Football History is an excellent book about football in the region as a whole, but is more about the teams than the individual players. Manchester City: 125 Years of Football is more pictoral and so not as useful for citation purposes.

In terms of books by other authors, everything from Joe Mercer onwards is well covered (presumably because that's what sells), but Bert Trautmann aside everything before that is patchy. Of note for early events are The Manchester City Story by Andrew Ward, a book written in the 1980s that was the first City history worthy of the name, and a biography of Billy Meredith, Football Wizard, which does a good job despite being written by a red. There's also a book about the formation of the club that has just come out and I intend to get, but its title escapes me at the moment.

However, even with all of the above, everything gets sketchy for all but the most significant players. The fire which destroyed the Hyde Road main stand in 1920 took the club records with it. In some cases full names aren't even known. For example The Big Book of City has a brief profile of one F Steele which begins "Sadly, research has failed to identify Steele's first name to date." mcfcstats.com has him as Fred Steele but sadly Steve Kay, the man behind mcfcstats.com, passed away recently.

The web doesn't tend to yield much for that era. In terms of finding what other clubs players played for, I know that a couple of WikiProject Football members have a book with full records for all League clubs from 1888 to 1945. Beyond that it is all too often a case of going to libraries and slogging through microfilm of old newspapers. I've done that for a couple of cup finals, but they have a specific date and level of coverage that makes it much easier. The amount of work that must have gone into producing some of the books about the club is phenomenal, particularly when you consider that the authors rarely make any money from them, and sometimes in the case of an unscrupulous publisher even end up owing money.

My habit is usually to only create an article when I have enough material for it to be more than about 1500 characters long, but that is just personal preference. I'm not the best person to ask for feedback about season articles, since it is one of the few football-related areas I've never touched upon. This is probably due to the fact that when I started out here, season articles tended to get deleted at AfD. Consensus has changed but my habits have been slower to do so. As its World Cup year my current project is 1934 FIFA World Cup (following on from 1930 which is now featured) but I'll happily help out with anything City. UEFA coefficient[edit]

Could you calculate the league coefficient of Serie A and Bundesliga for me please. As I could see, Germany is still at 4th after adding the bonus. Raymond "Giggs" Ko 09:41, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You flatter me, sir! I have actually been following the discussion on the talk page, but for all my resources I don't actually have one about the relationship between our two clubs. Because of this, I haven't been able to add much to the discussion at all. I've had a look at the subpage you've created, and it looks good. It's a little bit too statty, if you know what I mean, but I suppose that can't be helped! Good work! – PeeJay 19:45, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I note your comments on the article talk-page. Good luck in finding out the historical information. As for the abandoned matches, I was playing devil's advocate. I had a similar problem with an article I created about H. Williamson, who spent half a season with a club which folded, so their record was expunged. He still played 7 matches for them so why should they not be shown in his infobox? (This came up recently for Chester City players (and opponents).) Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 12:01, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, "The Complete Record of the FA Cup" merely states that Manchester City "did not enter" the FA Cup in 1895–96, no mention of withdrawing. Cheers. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 12:05, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, have you got a reference for the recent stats changes you made to the article, and if so can you add them to the article. Thanks. Eldumpo (talk) 11:44, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response to my message. My main source is the allfootballers.com database which is subscription site, although I also have the Michael Joyce 1888-1939 player records book, but these should have the same stats as Michael Joyce runs the website. Assuming you don't have access to these I can look up any City players you have stats queries over, if you wish. For info, the only 'A Jones' he has playing for City was an inside forward who is shown as making 2 appearances for City (scoring 1 goal), in the 1893-94 season. Eldumpo (talk) 15:10, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a ref to the article showing he made his Ardwick appearances in both 1894 and 1895, as I've been able to derive that due to the way the fixtures were split. Feel free to change it with your Man City ref if you think it is better/more explicit. Give me a shout if you do want any stats info, although if A Jones appeared in 1891-92 it wouldn't be covered by Joyce if it was a league game, as City weren't in the FL. Regards Eldumpo (talk) 15:45, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of kit maker logos in Premier League 2010-11 article[edit]

Well, I violated the rule twice, so I have a big impression of this. Both of the violations are reverted by PeeJay, giving the reason that the club logos have the license of copyright. Sorry for the bad expression, but the spirit of the rule is to protect wikipedia from cival lawsuit, so the usage of the logos, including club, or company, or something else, should be minimize. That's why the logos are usually only included in the introduction article of the thing. Previously, some article included the logo in the champion section but got removed, the reason of the removal is violating the FAIRUSE usage. Raymond "Giggs" Ko 14:02, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jack Hall[edit]

Hello. Definitely a different bloke. The Jack Hall who played for Man City in 1914/15 was Joseph E Hall known as Jack who joined City from Barnsley, then went to Bristol Rovers, and appears redlinked as Jack Hall (footballer born 1890) in the List of Bristol Rovers F.C. players (25–99 appearances). Best to check first. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:51, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Source: Joyce, Michael (2004). Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939. Nottingham: SoccerData (Tony Brown). ISBN 978-1-899468-67-6. There are 12 John or Jack Halls who played league football before the Second World War, apparently.
The List of Birmingham players dates are years of first and last first-team appearance (it says in the key, I just checked to make sure :-) He last played in 1914, but left in 1915, which it did say originally in his infobox but got changed when someone converted to the new-format infobox, thanks for noticing. I think it's right now... If there's ever anything you need looking up in Mr Joyce's book, please feel free to ask. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:10, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done a bit to your list. Have looked at them all; where I've made no addition, Joyce doesn't know the name either. You may want to consider Johnny McMahon, whose 109 appearances seem to have escaped notice when List of Manchester City F.C. players was created. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:29, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think if a player was actually transferred during the war, he notes the change, but not guest appearances. And the only stats he gives are for the Football League and for the promotion/relegation Test Matches between 1893-1896. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:51, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bah, I've manually checked for missing players with over 100 apps several times, yet still it isn't complete, oh well. Speaking of the list of players requiring full names, J. Stenson is James Stenson according to Paul Toovey's Manchester City - The Birth of the Blues 1880–1894. Oldelpaso (talk) 13:05, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's me not being clear (just for a change :-) Johnny McMahon is in the 100+apps list, (initially I thought he wasn't, I'll change what I put on the players needing names list) but was linked to a different bloke of the same name, so it looked like he had a wiki page but didn't. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:19, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

City in Europe[edit]

I'm neutral on the idea, no objections though. The content will generally be replicated in season articles, but it might be of use to readers. If its a daunting challenge you want, then there's making a list of City players for those with less than 100 apps, like the Gillingham ones, and/or trying to get the 100+ apps list to Featured List status. Or improving the records and stats article - from a cursory look there's loads of internationals listed who never played internationally while at City. You've probably noticed that I've barely been around lately. I've recently both started an Open University course and committed myself to running a 10k (when I'm zero fitness couch potato who struggles to run for a bus), so my time is getting a tad squeezed. I'm available to help with anything that needs it though, so don't be afraid to ask. Oldelpaso (talk) 13:05, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I could never run a marathon either - 10k is approximately a quarter marathon! Its a Business course. A short one, not a full degree. My employer doesn't offer much in the way of training and development so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I thought about doing a humanities course, but figured something with clear employability benefits was the way to go, current economic climate and all that. It feels slightly odd to be studying again, the better part of a decade after I finished uni.
Anyway, on the City articles front, I might make a start to make a list of players with 50-100 apps in a sandbox, and see how many there are before deciding whether a merge with 100+ would be reasonable. To get a feel for the featured list process, its probably best to go to the talk page of some of those already featured and look at their nominations and peer reviews. Preferably more recent ones, the standards have changed over time. Oldelpaso (talk) 16:47, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the non-UEFA competitions should be included. Without exception they are/were very lightly regarded, and in my opinion don't deserve to be given the same treatment. The Tennemt-Caledonian Cup is a particularly odd one, in that if played now it would purely be regarded as a preseason tournament. However the club do include it in their records.
City were not disqualified for 92–93 (or 91–92). Yes, if England had maintained its UEFA coefficent City would have qualified, but for all we know every English club could have got knocked out in the first round for those five years. If City had finished in a nominally qualifying position during the ban, then I'd have mentioned it, but by then the ban was over. However, it does make me think that a mention of the method of qualification would be useful, particularly for the Fair Play entries. Oldelpaso (talk) 10:32, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and from seeing your note on Struway's talk page - The Complete Record book does have full lineups for the war years, albeit surnames only in a number of cases. I wouldn't include wartime-only players in player lists though as war matches are not generally included in official statistics, and frequently players from other clubs played a game or two for City simply because they happened to be stationed in the area at the time. Oldelpaso (talk) 10:39, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do. Once again, Manchester City - The Complete Record is the book for this. You may or may not know this already, but Mcfcstats is no longer updated. Sadly the guy who ran it, Steve Kay, passed away a few months ago following a long illness. Oldelpaso (talk) 12:58, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The information in your sandbox page for the subsidiary tournament is identical to what is in the book. Oldelpaso (talk) 20:11, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You could always apply for one of these ;) Oldelpaso (talk) 20:20, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Mostly me being silly. I just happened to see it on a forum within a few minutes of you saying you were strapped for cash. Looking again, the discrepancy is also present in Complete Record, describing City's final record as W5 D1 L0 F14 A4 Pts11. I think I've identified the match. Stretfordend.co.uk lists the United home match as 3–0, not 3–1. Oldelpaso (talk) 09:49, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Southern Football League seasons[edit]

Well I don't know if this is the official way to put the templates, but I have seen the templates of famous football clubs (like the Man Utd one) and they are without the rowed effect. Personally I think they look better this way and are smaller, but don't worry I will ask at WP:FOOTY to see their opinion. A18919 (talk) 05:22, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

City supporters categories[edit]

Thanks for adding the categories. I've just created the supporter page as other clubs on Wikipedia have started to do the same recently, so feel free to add to the page if you find anything informative about City supporters (talk) 20:40, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Exact reason, like you say, why I decided to create a supporter page. I saw the separate supporter pages for Arsenal and Everton amongst other and, like you say the 5 star history on the rags compared with City's quite meagre Wikipedia history filled me with sadness. I'll scour some City books and the internet to see what I can add on the City's main Wikipedia page. Oh yeah, good work on your City season pages too, I actually use that to check City's fixtures and stats, always upto date very quick and informative. Always wondered who did those.(talk) 22:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, good good. Anyway keep up the good work(talk) 11:59, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed about the inepitude of Wigan view. Talking about the Spuds, Tottenham 3-Manchester City 4 was a recent classic, definitely one of the great FA Cup comebacks, if not the greatest. Hate to mention it, but the Gillingham play-off game was life or death as well as the perfect, 'typical City' match. If we hadn't of won that we could of been in the situation clubs like Charlton, Southampton, Leeds etc. find themselves in now. The 3-1 win in 1968 against United to seal the title was also pivotal too maybe? I'll do some research on the key matches, if I find sufficient information I'll make some match pages. (talk) 16:59, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I visit Blue Moon frequently and post sometimes, I mainly go on there because news, updates, rumours etc. tend be on there quicker than most of the other football sites. I have a account on there, ste.sully (talk) 17:07, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there are some dopey users on there for sure, but its good banter, especially 100%Mancs photoshop images and its good for gauging City fans opinion. I'll look out for you on Blue Moon, my account is ste.sully but I mainly go on it to snoop fellow City fans' opinion on matches, players etc. (talk) 17:24, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Manchester City matches box[edit]

Thanks for creating the matches box, I was going to create a separate page listing famous City matches, but the box is better. If I create any other famous matches I'll add them to the box. Stevo (talk) 20:40, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
