Dear Wikipedia editor, would please in the future abstain from edit summaries like this particular one [vandalism] and [like this]. It was neither chauvinistic nor vandalism. The name was and still is is referenced further in the article, and was stable version for more than two years. Hence, the baseless accusations on WP:VANDAL is on you, per existing policy. Meanwhile I do suggest you to familiarize with WP:VANDAL policy and also with WP:FIVE, and also with the sources presented in the article. Hello, I am a researcher working on a project about the relics of St. Justinian now in Mosar, Belarus (previously Myadzel). I have some questions about this photo of a print illustration of St. Justinian that you posted on the Myadzel page. I am interested in the original 18th-century image.

  • What is the historical source of the illustration (book or devotional hymn)?
  • Who is the author or artist and what is the date of publication?
  • What is the current location (archive, museum or library) of this published source?
  • Do you have a contact (for example email address) for a curator or scholar that you may share with me, whom I can contact about getting access to study this source?

Thank you so much for reaching out to Dr. Šytal about this and for sending him the translation of my questions. Unfortunately, I have neither Polish nor Belarusian (French, Italian, some German, a little Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian). I do have a friend and colleague in Minsk from department of history at Belarusian State University and I can ask them to translate - maybe this is an option. So if you have given my questions already to Šytal and he can reply to my email (above), I am certain I can manage to communicate with him. I am planning a research trip to Belarus hopefully in August/September and I want to examine the original source for that historical image. By the way, because I see you are interested in Roman Catholicism and in the history of GDL as well as Belarus, you may find it interesting to know, that my research (together with Belarusian colleagues) has revealed that the relic of St. Justinian (a very specific type of relic-sculpture called corpisanti which are only very recently investigated systematically by scholars) represents the oldest example of this type of relic that is known to survive in the world today. I am working to publish something about this history in Belarusian Historical Journal. For this reason I am very interested in relevant historical sources like the image. I wrote to him that he could contact you directly via email (because you have some friend to translate from Belarusian) or through me. The results of your research are really interesting. Due to the dramatic history of Belarus, there are not many valuable relics or historical artifacts. So this discovery is of great importance. No problem - now I am delayed. Thank you very much for acting as middleman to negotiate my question with Kastuś Šytal. If he replies to my email I am confident we can reach an understanding. You're absolutely right that Belarusian history has not been kind to cultural heritage (like elsewhere in the region), and thus it is very lucky that St. Justinian relics survive still today. Corpisanti relic-sculptures were made with bones from ancient Roman catacombs excavated by Vatican, then assembled in special Roman workshops into life-size 3-D sculptures. As many as 30,000 corpisanti were made for export from Rome, but today these are unique and rare sacral cultural heritage and only about 200 survive worldwide. Similar relics of the corpisanti type were also once in Opsa in Belarus and Varaklani and Kraslava (Latvia), as well as examples in Lithuania (esp. Vilnius). These are all now destroyed. One example remains in Lithuania in Valkininkai, a small village near Vilnius. This corpisanti relic of St. Bonifacus is now in Vilnius museum laboratory for analysis. It dates to c. 1775, so it is still not so old as Belarusian example, from c. 1754. Until now, Italian researchers have thought that earliest corpisanti relics date from 1782. But Belarus proves this theory very wrong by some decades - so indeed you are correct, this discovery is of great importance. I have colleague now in Rome who tries to find some documents in the Vatican Secret Archives about the history of St. Justinian relics. Hopefully something will come to light and we can add to publication. In addition to publication in Belarusian research journal, a scholarly conference in planned, and later international publication in English-language global academic journals and books. I will be certain to mention thanks to yourself and to Kastuś Šytal in future publications on this subject because your assistance has been very valuable. An update: I have found a Polish article with an illustration of the same image of St. Justinian. It cites the source as Lithuanian Art Museum. So I will contact Lithuanian colleagues to ask about this. However, I am still interested to know, what is the source for Kastuś Šytal, maybe it is different source, for example a collection in Belarus. I have a reply from Kastuś Šytal with information that will be very helpful to my research. Thank you again for your assistance!

1. Engraving of St. Justin was published, most likely, as an illustration in a separate edition. It was published in Pomniki rytownictwa krajowego. 2. Tyszkiewicz's library was kept in Łahojsk, but in 1856 it, or most of it, was transferred to the Vilnia Museum of Antiquities. After the uprising of 1863, the Vilnia Museum of Antiquities was liquidated, and most of its collections were separated and placed in the museum collections of Moscow, Krakow and Warsaw. The fate of the collection of engravings is unknown to me, but perhaps someone of the specialized researchers studied it and can say something specific.
(translator's remark) The third answer is about publishing in Słowo, that you already know. Kastuś Šytal also would like to know if you need information about honoring St. Justin in Miadzieł and Mosar and the holidays that took place there. Perhaps he could find something in the old periodicals, at least in the Catholic newspaper Biełarus, published in Vilnia in 1913-1915, where was correspondence from a local man describing a festival that gathered up to 10,000 believers.

This is good information about Tyszkiewicz's library collection. I think possibly the Justin image made its way into Vilnia Art Gallery collection. I hope my colleagues there will find this. However the additional information from Kastuś Šytal is quite useful. I have some research notes (also in Belarusian) about the relics, which I sent by email to Kastuś Šytal. However, I do not know the Catholic newspaper Biełarus, published in Vilnia in 1913-1915, or the description of the festival. This would indeed be very good to have for research.

Kastuś Šytal sent an article from Biełarus newspaper about the festival to your email. If you need to clarify any details you can do it here. Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment.
