Notability (music)[edit]

I am not an adopter but I could perhaps give you a little support. Notability is not something I am very experienced in, have you got a link to the Swedish copy of the article I could look at ? Also the name of the band so I could do a little search on them. Off2riorob (talk) 17:42, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption[edit]

Hi, I am not really very good when it comes to music but I can help you If you need and would be happy to adopt you as a user. 95jb14 (talk) 09:56, 25 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]

In the Labyrinth[edit]

Sorry, I have been busier outside of Wikipedia than normal. I've had a good look at your article: Firstly it's not got any references. If you created the article without any references it probably won't survive the first week. I know that the article itself is very well linked but it's the refs that count. Links to the subject's website or blog don't count, they have to be from somewhere else, like a news website, a book, magazine, newspaper and/or any other non-blog type of website.

Secondly, the majority of the article is discographies and lists, great as this may be and well done but there is only a paragraph that actually explains the article. Perhaps try to incorporate the current line up section into a paragraph and then another section about the history.

Finally, the article doesn't explain why it should be on Wikipedia, the is called Wikipedia:Notability. If it isn't clear why the article should be included (which it isn't very clear) then some believe that it shouldn't be included. You don't have to say 'this is included because...', just explain awards they have won, awards the singers or musicians in it have won and any other things that are important. It is a fact that the majority of deleted articles are music, band or singer related. I suggest that you have a look at Wikipedia:Notability (music) and Wikipedia:WikiProject Music as these are very helpful places. 95jb14 (talk) 15:21, 30 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]

I think that providing the images meet the right copyright statuses (see Wikipedia Wikipedia:Copyrights) then that would certainly help the article. A redirect would be superb, most of the info on the band could be included easily as could the discography and related sections. I know that the blog thing is pretty harsh but I don't make the rules and these are the kind of rules you have to abide by, I know it can be awkward sometimes but that is what I have to teach you. If you can find some info on Lindhals background too it would greatly improve the write-up. Another interesting link is Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. Let me know when you've rewritten it. 95jb14 (talk) 20:42, 30 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]
Here is the link to the music notability guidelines Wikipedia:Notability_(music) have a good read of it, the band has to meet the notability guidelines. Off2riorob (talk) 17:32, 31 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
1) The in the Labyrinth reference is perfectly good.
2) I haven't found a problem with the upload, what you have to to is go to Special:Upload the click browse under the source file name. Find where you have saved the picture that you want to upload and double click on the image. It will then automatically give the same name as your picture in the Destination filename section. I don't really change this but if you want change it apart the file extension (the .jpg or .bmp or whatever part). Fill in the summary bit, sign your name and info. If you aren't sure about the copyright tag/ Licensing then leave it or chose one 'I don't know' then contact me straight away and I'll fix it. Click on upload file and it should work. If it still doesn't work go to the Help Desk.
3) Whatever you feel is right, give the In the Labyrinth article another write-up and I'll do some searching to ☺, regards, 95jb14 (talk) 22:04, 31 October 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Images[edit]

Are you having trouble uploading them or placing them in the article? 95jb14 (talk) 15:20, 2 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

In The Labyrinth[edit]

I've been looking at your article and decided to see what I could do with what you did in my own sandbox but I found it hard. Yes there are the links that you found but they're about the albums not the band. The only background information I found was from their own website, which as I have explained can't be referenced. I don't mean to pesamistic but I feel that this may not do well. It is a small band with little mention outside of their own website and nothing verifiable on their background or History. Hundreds of bands are removed each week because they are notable. I have given you a link to Wikipedia:Notability above, which I take it you read but there just isn't anything that says why it should be added to this encyclopedia. I think the best thing you can do is add the pictures then create the article and we'll see where it goes and whether anyoe elso discovers it and contributes. I know what it's like starting up a new article on a small subject, it can be done sometimes but just not always.

On a lighter note I may have found your problem with the images. I found the one you uploaded. Now when you upload an image it is uploaded into a File: type of page that stores it. For example File:Screenshot 95jb14.jpg, this is one I created. The problem that you have is getting it onto the page. This is an easy mistake to make you see you don't download it onto the page. When you've downloaded it onto the File page like your File:DetailOfTowers.jpg has you find which page or pages you want it to go on a add a link to the page for example (you have to see this in edit mode):

File:DetailOfTowers.jpgHere I have also changed the size.

Aha, now that makes a lot of sense! You mean I have to insert a link into my article which in turn leads to that separate file holding the image. Ok, I think I get it! It's like when putting together links on a homepage leading to various parts of the site.
So what I will do is take a break, then come back and have a go at it. And if it's not working you'll most probably hear from me straight away!
Thanks so much!Kdkwinana (talk) 18:26, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

List of problems follows, in a collapsing box for ease of use. The messages vary, but the same problems affect each image: where did you get it? Is it under copyright, or under a free license? If it's under copyright, why should it be here (a claim of fair-use)? Message continues below. BencherliteTalk 00:23, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:DetailOfTowers.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:DetailOfTowers.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Off2riorob (talk) 18:35, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:PsychedelicSweden Coverart.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Peterlindahl.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:05, 3 November 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BencherliteTalk 00:05, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia takes file copyright issues seriously. You can't just upload images from websites and then use them in articles. They have to be freely available (i.e. out of copyright, or available under a free license compatible with Wikipedia reuse). If they are under copyright, they can only be uploaded with a valid claim of fair use linked to a particular article. For an example of a fair-use rationale for an album cover, see File:Michaeljacksonthrilleralbum.jpg. That's the type of detail that's needed for a valid claim of fair-use. All your uploads must give details of where you found the image, the copyright or licensing details, and give full details of the fair-use rationale. Otherwise, they will be deleted. As the messages above so, ask at at the the media copyright questions page if you need help. And don't worry - images are difficult things to deal with, and there are lots of experienced people out there who will help you get it right. Happy editing. BencherliteTalk 00:23, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Who was this Wikipedian who told you that was how it worked? And there simply being no copyright notice does not mean there's no copyright. Ironholds (talk) 10:43, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, that's the problem - good to see you get it. I'll leave this to bencherlite for now, I was just enquiring as to identity. Thank you. Ironholds (talk) 11:28, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message; I'm sure your helper will assist you with these issues, but let me know if I can help further. I only noticed that there was a potential problem because someone posted this message at the Help Desk about your sandbox page. Best wishes, BencherliteTalk 12:28, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't get it to work with the copyright functions[edit]

No well I'm afraid I didn't get the grasp of it, not being able to work the functions of uploading and filling in with information concerning copyright issues. I don't understand how to go on with this unless somebody gives me comprihensive instructions. Maybe my English isn't adequate (I am a Swedish citizen) when it comes to technical issues of this kind, but I cannot do anything but try!
However, I am still waiting to be assisted by the person at Wikipedia who promised to help me with the copyright issues. This person told me to go ahead and do the uploading and then leave the rest to him/her. Maybe I will get help soon or I won't. In any case, I am only human and as such I can not go over the top of my capabilities! There is no information whatsoever at the website where I obtained these images stating copyright control, so how could I know I was about to take a wrong turn? Kdkwinana (talk) 10:00, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, there is no problem, you haven't done anything wrong (well you have but it is not a big issue). Most of the pictures that you find on the internet are not free to use. Your pictures have been tagged for deletion because they have no copyright status, if this is not corrected after 7days they will be deleted. You have this time to add copyright information, the link to media copyright questions page is a good place to ask any questions about pictures. I have a question..did you take or wholly create any of the pics yourself? Off2riorob (talk) 12:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I assure you I am not assuming anything, if you created any pic yourself then that is easy, you would be the copyright owner and could release them into the public domain. Off2riorob (talk) 13:52, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed about the pics of the people, if they are not free use we can rid ourselves of them, as for the album covers, I have seen then used as fair use in a few articles so they might be ok, I will look a little into it to see what I can find out. Off2riorob (talk) 14:25, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the album cover here to see the copyright status of this album cover Extra Virgin Off2riorob (talk) 14:28, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked a question about the album covers at the media help page here have a look and add a comment if you like. Off2riorob (talk) 14:38, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, my Swedish is rubbish, my media copyright skill are also weak, so we are learning together. We can ask a few questions and see what answers we get. Off2riorob (talk) 14:48, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright[edit]

I appologise for not getting to you sooner, I am out until evening time. To correct the copyright problems, I need to know a few things first. It appears you have saved the images from the website then uploaded them. I can't see a copyright on the website so I presume they aren't copyrighted but PLEASE read Wikipedia:Copyrights just to familiarize yourself with the basics. I admit it's hard but uploading images like this is pretty risky in teerms of copyright issues. Perhaps you should write to them via email or write properly (not advised unless you physically can't send an email). You need to ask whether it is okay to display the images in Wikipedia and under what License. List the Images and explain the intentions. Even if you don't fully understand it copy it and send it to me (only if its translated to English!) and I'll sort it out and explain it etc. If you could do this a.s.a.p. that would be much appreciated. By the way, I understand that you're swedish, I just wanted to say your English is excellent! Bye, 95jb14 (talk) 20:08, 3 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

That's fine, I am also interested into seeing what this user Off2riorob will turn up, bye 95jb14 (talk) 19:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Update[edit]

Hi, the pictures are generally considered to be copyright vios, so no go...and the album covers could perhaps be used in an article about the album but not about the band....so they will all be deleted tomorrow or today or whenever the 7days expires, sorry about that. Off2riorob (talk) 12:20, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any evidence that you hold the cpyright to the pictures? Off2riorob (talk) 14:19, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you decide to make any articles about a specific album then I think we could get a fair use application accepted, what a pa lava eh, legal issues. Off2riorob (talk) 23:14, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about just going on with the article which I've already written and skip the images? Until some time later today you would still find it in my sandbox at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Kdkwinana/sandbox&oldid=323558408 After a certain time I suspect the images to be gone but the writing to still remain. However, one can't be to sure, so I would ask of you to make a fair judgement on the text itself to see if it could stand the test of notability or whatever is needed to have an article included on Wikipedia.
Of course I could write an article on just one In the labyrinth album, but I would concentrate on all three releases so far to span their entire production as to give my coverage credibility. Or esle I'd only be explaining about one third of their official work as far as CD albums goes.
So please let me know what you think! Thanks for your kind assistance so far! Kdkwinana (talk) 08:19, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the pictures will vanish sometime today. I will have a look at the text then and see if there is enough notability, I like the idea if the main article does not meet notability that a article about the bands main album with a fair use album cover is a good idea, better than nothing, I'll come back to it after the pics have gone, have a nice day, Off2riorob (talk) 11:28, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you decide to create an album article, first you should choose the most notable, the biggest seller etc. Off2riorob (talk) 12:00, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look round at some articles about similar music albums to get a feel for the general requirements and the style. Off2riorob (talk) 12:26, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, sounds like a plan, the albums should be stand alone though with a link to the main article, if we can get the main article through the notability police. Off2riorob (talk) 13:47, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was only joking about the police, if wiki hd articles about just anything, the servers would be as big as Stockholm. From the reply I got at media questions I am quietly confident that we could have a fair use rationale for the album sleeve on an article about the album. Off2riorob (talk) 13:59, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

See the discussion here . Off2riorob (talk) 14:02, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Now that was a mighty piece of information! But all I wanted to know was whether it's difficult or not to apply for permission to use my own paintings with an article covering albums by In the labyrinth. Maybe it's a bit beyond your range too? Which wouldn't surprise me because this seems to be a, to say the least, very large and complex issue! But then again, be aware that I am not an anglo-saxon speeking individual like you or most of the others taking part in the discussion!Kdkwinana (talk) 14:22, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

copyright[edit]

Wikipedia:Copyrights all in english i'm afraid, what evidence do you have that the copyright belongs to you? Did you give the band permission to use the pics on the album sleeves? Is it noted on the album sleeve that the paintings are attributed to you? Off2riorob (talk) 14:31, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

'Images' and 'can it cope?'[edit]

I think the inclusion of images in any wikipedia article always helps but of course you are having difficukty so I don't think it's worth it now. As for the article I struggle to see how can be included, I am just not so sure. There isn't anything on abackground of the group, other than what's on their own website and I just don't think it's notable enough. I am sorry but there are so many other parts of this wikipeia that you can work on: anti-vandalism, Wikiprojects (areas where user can come together to help articles of a certain subject), spell-checking, working on the help desk and just general editing. Don't stop just because your article didn't work out, get some experience and do what yoou can. I will always be happy to help you. Please reply and tell me what you think, 95jb14.
