Asian American Pictures

I feel the drawings I drew are better than real pictures of Asian Americans. I spent twelve months, going once per week to an Asian-Indian club. I did this to find out how to draw South Asians. I asked "Who is the most Indian-looking?" I modeled my pictures after their descriptions. I also feel my pictures allowed me to choose pictures of Asians who looked like the average face instead of the "prettiest" face. --Dark Tichondrias 1:00 February 25 2006

Request Help Resolving Controversy

Hi, I am sorry to bother you with a most unusual request. I am a mediator for a dispute on Wikipedia. It is possible that you may be able to help resolve one of the items under contention. There are two websites called www.assault-weapon.com and www.marijuana.com. At one point these sites mirrored some or all of Wikipedia. (However, today, these sites do not mirror Wikipedia. A google search shows that at one time these sites had a user page with your Wikipedia username Ref.

Malayans come from the Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia. On the other hand, the Malayan race defined by Blumenbach is all of Southeast Asia. Eskimos are a tribe of Alaskan natives. Alphabetize the Template

It is possible to alphabetize the template, but it is hard. Alphabetizing is not easy. If another race is added to the template, the whole thing has to be revised. All the races would have to be pushed down one if the new race started with an A. This is too much work for each new race. I plan on adding more historical definitions of race, so this would be too much work for each race. The two races which were deleted were deleted because they were from a source which was not credible. They were not historical races. The website the two races were from was a satire of "March of the Titans" which defined the Nordish race. The satire was from a website was called "March of the Giants" which defined the Medish race. The Medish and Sudish races were jokes and were recently defined. It included comical references to the Medish being like Ikea chairs and Nordish being hicks. Yes, he actually considered them races. I rented a book from the library about the history of the idea of races. Other race scientists at the time commented on his racial system. Dark Tichondrias's "historical definitions of race" articles

Egads, I've lost count of how many we're up to now. Very few, if any, deserve full articles in my opinion. Most seem to reference the work of only a single author, sometimes centuries ago, at a time when racial theory was very different to what it is now. It looks like that the articles are not capable of meaningful expansion beyond their present size. He has been amenable to contrary opinion in the past -- he agreed to db-author two of his own articles that did not meet WP:RS and WP:V, but I suspect we're not going to persuade him to do so for all these. Maybe we can ask him if he'll agree to merge them into Former racial divisions or something similar (but note, there's already Race (historical definitions)). I'm away for a few days now, but we can touch base at the start of next week. --BillC 18:13, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

In terms of the articles' accuracy, most of them say little or nothing beyond "the race of lotus-eaters (or whatever) was a race defined by historic race scientist Joe Bloggs" and then gives a cite for this claim. This claim is probably accurate insofar as Joe Bloggs did actually write this the eighteenth century. But as I see it, the problem with all these articles is the notability of their subject matter. A once-off and since discredited theory (at least we assume it is discredited -- our author has given us no clues as to whether it has been) is nothing more than an obscure passing footnote in history. It barely deserves a mention in an article on Joe Bloggs himself. I suspect that few of these articles would survive AfD's but I would prefer not to go down that route yet. You read part of: "Memoirs Read Before the Anthropological Society of London" -namely Vol 1 1863-64,pp 36O-64 the location of T.Bendyshe's translation of Bernier's contribution to "Journal des Scavans",April 24, 1684; which is basically a transcription of a letter to one of his friends. Only the first half of the letter is about racial classification, the other half is about (universal?) feminine beauty. see [1]

adding newly-created race articles to their respective creators

Since Mongoloid, Caucasoid, Australoid, Capoid, and Negroid have their own page even though they are part of Carleton S. Coon's system, the other races should have their own page. If the races defined by Carleton S. Coon were all merged to his page, then it would be acceptable to do the same thing to the other race articles. --- Dark Tichondrias 23:42, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

The primary reason why the Mongoloid page is very long is because it has a lot of opinions about the way different peoples look, representative pictures and it has genetic history of Asians near the bottom. If it was shortened to "Mongoloid is a term made by Carleton Coon in his book to include these peoples. The term is not used anymore and considered offensive because of its previous use to labele people with Down Syndrome" it would be as short as all the other race articles. Either the extra stuff should be added to all the other race stubs to make them comprable to the Mongoloid page or the Mongoloid page as well as the stubs should be merged with their respective race scientist. --- Dark Tichondrias 06:21, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

1.
Yes, a typo was inadvertently introduced in fixing typos. Henceforth, I'll enlarge the text of my display.

In fixing, I was also looking to making as concise as can, without losing the existing sense of the writer.

2. Style
For style, since The Chicago Manual of Style is referenced in Wikipedia: Manual of Style, it might be a fair extrapolation that the Chicago Style is otherwise generally the standard (per Wikipedia, of course). I might slip, though, 'cause I also like the Modern Language Association (MLA) style.

"[N]orth- and southbound" (N-S) and "(east- and westbound)" (E-W) are in themselves less important in that all the avenues in greater (metro) Seattle have their compass direction following, and these all run near N-S; all the streets have their compass direction preceding, and these all run near E-W. This could be a boilerplate footnote common to all the 'pedia entries for metropolitan neighborhoods, making the body of the entry that much more smooth reading, and making convenient pasting the note into entries.

Adding the compass point and direction to every instance in a sentence or a list can become redundant and less readable.

Compass points do not have periods, as, for example neither does NATO or the element Al. [Chicago Style, Wikipedia Boxing the compass and Cardinal direction ]. The official designations on maps and on actual official street signs use the standard convention. The official designations in USPS addresses use the standard convention. Another way to think of this may be to consider the compass points as symbols ilke those of the Periodic Table.

Numbers less than one hundred are generally written in words (incidentally distinguishing them from numbered items or maths at a glance). Particularly with few syllables, this makes for smoother reading.

3. Punctuation
Further, Lukobe wrote,

It could be interesting to find refs. I think I've seen it both ways in print, though I don't recall where or when. But then, punctuation marks are popularly commonly added or left out willy-nilly, as The Economist contributor Lynne Truss has amusingly documented.

The only rationale I know about for "Ave." with a period in a nickname is to distinguish from Ave as Latin. Since this is on their beat, maybe the city desk of the local weekly knows.

Periods are full stops, so as such they should be minimized unless a full stop is intended.

4. Major and minor arterials
In editing and in Lukobe's reply, my

delineates light-duty nominal arterials, and heavily-used interneighborhood major thoroughfares or shopping streets (like The Ave). The above Brooklyn and 20th are good representative examples of relatively small, short, stop-sign-and-go minor arterials that are pretty unsuitable for heavy interneighborhood traffic. These may not even be shown on published maps of major arterials. NE Pacific isn't a good thoroughfare either--it's evolved from a sedate, elegant, tree-lined boulevard into an open, rather widely spread-out, ad hoc, cobbled-together east-west connector for converging some five major and minor north-south arterials. The point here in a wiki entry is somehow emphasizing the through streets for visitors, and de-emphasizing the small arterials familiar to locals (and bicyclists : ) .

So, in general for such 'pedia entries, maybe list the main thoroughfares first (journalism style), and then the minor arterials, using turns of phrase for the two that make their relative utility clear.

So far, "main arterial" xor "main thoroughfare" and "minor arterial" (though I'd prefer "main thoroughfare" for its variety).

So perhaps, "The main thoroughfares are the Roosevelt Way and 11th Avenue one-way pair, 15th Avenue NE, and University Way; minor arterials are Brooklyn and 20th Avenues NE (all north- and southbound). NE Pacific, 45th, and 50th Streets are the east- and westbound thoroughfares." The one-way pair is not at all apparent to those who don't already know. One-way streets are not always immediately adjacent. Which is which direction is less essential since the pair conforms to the "drive on the right side of the road" convention.

Lukobe wrote,

I'm attempting to minimize redundancy by grouping like together in a single sentence, such as "Avenues NE" in one and "NE Streets" in another. This could do well in general for smooth readability of wiki entries on neighborhoods.

5. More accurate
For Northgate Seattle neighborhood, if a corrected map is not readily available, maybe edit the text in order that the the error be noted and the 'pedia entry be correct. A brief description of North College Park and the wiki entry content as a combined "Northgate and North College Park neighborhoods" should suffice in the meantime.

Does anyone live near the college? If not, I could drop by there some time, since their newspaper archives likely have documentation for refs. The only other source I know off-hand 'd be Pacific Publishing that has the northseattleherald-outlook ["domain is currently expired"] and other local weeklies.

In general, correctness would be more important than appearance.

5.a. The Ave
"The University of Washington University Book Store" is more accurate. "The Universtiy of Washington's College of Medicine" would be similarly more awkward than such as "The University of Washington College of Medicine". The mention of a theatre chain (albeit a local one) without mention of neighborhood icon Andy Shiga of Shiga's Imports looks very much like product placement.

Both local newspapers of record officially use "The Ave", no period.

5.b Neighborhoods, Seattle.
Accuracy. "The official city map[2] shows" referenced in some neighborhood entries is explicitly not. Cf. the fine print footer of such as Wedgwood.

Conclusion
This neighborhood topic category is great--'used to have to buttonhole diverse sources to find this local info for a city or some place. Thank you all.

So far, there are no errors of content introduced; these issues need to be furthered toward the most credible content. Comment would be appreciated.

Neither article demonstrates notability. I'd be inclined to merge Deano's to the appropriate neighborhood: it would be worth a couple of paragraphs (its trevails over the last decade would be a good window into gentrification) but I can't imagine it merits a real article. I don't know enough about a particular Zen Center to know if it is notable.
