It is always nice to spot a Czech editor here (so one doesn't feel completely alone :)

I see you worked a lot on several Czech writers (on Czech Wiki) and these are either not covered or poorly covered on en: - if you feel for it and find a time, please feel free to add/update some articles.

The number of articles added in August might be again almost twice the size of cs-wiki. Ahoj Dane, thanks for proofreading Jiří Gruša. I translated the text from Czech sources, I am glad there were not as many mistakes as I expected. Could you please have a look at Jan Potměšil page some day? I am afraid people redirected from Notable users section on wheelchair page, might be confused by my dialect :-))) "Worldwide view needed" template was hanging there, so I added him and Schäuble. Second wish - how would you translate the following titles to English: Území bílých králů/Das Geheimnis der weißen Hirsche (I'm sure whether Territory or Mystery would be better for the English title and where to put the), Hovory o štěstí mezi čtyřma očima, Příběhy obyčejného šílenství (I have seen Tales of Common Insanity on divadlo.cz website) and Povídejme si, děti. As for the titles:

Your translation Territory of the White Kings sounds fine. However, I might prefer The Territory of White Kings (the articles used the other way around). The only online source I could find uses a translation of the German title, The Territory of White Deer [1]. I don't know how widely the series is known under a specific name abroad, so it's difficult for me to decide which title should be used as the main one.
For Hovory o štěstí mezi čtyřma očima, I might write Face-to-face Talks about Happiness, but I'm not sure whether I'd be able to attract any audience by that title. :)
For Příběhy obyčejného šílenství, IMDb gives Wrong Side Up [2] as the international title.
For Povídejme si, děti, I'd simply say Let's Talk, Children, or less formally Let's Talk, Kids.

Hi Dan, thanks for your reply. In the past, I did not care about the titles so much. However, I have just read Kundera's lamentation regarding French translation of Kafka in Testaments Betrayed so I decided to ask some expert :-))

I realized White King is some detergent, so I am going to use The Territory of White Deer.
Regarding the clumsy title of Hovory - I e-mailed the author. Maybe I'll just use Talks about Happiness
Příběhy: I would like to make an article about the original play, not about the film (actually I haven't seen it). I'll start with Tales of Common Insanity and later move the page if necessary. Or The Tales...?
O.K. Let's Talk, Children is my favourite book. I especially like the part about a grubby boy with potatoes growing in his ears :-)

Diacritics for sorting keys of categories[edit]

It is better NOT to use diacritics for sorting key of categories. It sometimes results in quite funny arrangement of items, very unexpected for both Czech and English reader. Pavel Vozenilek 22:28, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page moves[edit]

Hi Sebesta. Signature[edit]

Hi Sebesta, the way to modify how your signature looks when you hit the signature button or when you type ~~~~ is to click on "my preferences" and then modify what it says in the box labeled "Nickname". Be sure to click the box saying "Raw signature" too. Hit Save and you're done. Dashes on the anniversary pages[edit]

In my current setup, there is no visible difference for me between your and my version of Portal:Germany/Anniversaries/April/April 11. Since this question is relevant for the other ~80 other such pages (see Portal:Germany/Anniversaries for a list of those I have created already), could you explain what you are doing and why and whether I should do that for the other anniversary pages? What I did was changing hyphens into (en) dashes. The difference is explained e.g. here. It might seem to be a minor difference, but to be typographically correct, (en) dashes (–) should be used in that case, not hyphens (-). It would be nice to have this corrected on the other relevant pages. Btw, you surely have the en dash sign in the character map below your edit window. While you are probably technically correct, this is a rather minor point. I won't fix this on the pages that exist already (but I won't stop anybody who has a bot to do this). I'll try to remember on new pages (although I hate to use characters that I can't type). So "–" is the correct one? Yes, "–" is the correct one. It's twice as long as "-", but still they look very similar, and most people are not able (or willing) to distinguish them, not even many professionals in publishing houses. Hence it's a very frequent "mistake." I consider it a real mistake myself (I've been a proofreader for quite a long time, that might me the reason), so I correct it wherever I can (if I have the time, of course). I'm also glad when I can "teach" others how to use these correctly. Okay, with my other browser I see a difference. I'm not quite certain yet what looks best. One advantage of hyphens over dashes is that hyphens are used on the day pages like May 11 that I copy a lot of info from (if you want to get those changed, try at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Days of the year) and so I have to change less things when creating one of the annoversary pages for the Germany portal. German writers listed as Czech writers[edit]

No, no. He was born in South Bohemia and died in Prague. He traveled quite a lot, worked at the embassy in Mexico, etc., that's true, but he was Czech and wrote his works in Czech. Btw, his name is spelled Norbert Frýd, not Fried. Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 21:54, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I assumed Fryd was only the Czechified spelling. Anyway, I noticed you reverted my change on list of Czech writers to the list from the German wikipedia. I went ahead and put the German list on the talk page. I figure that the only way to get most of those articles made is to go full-speed ahead and bring all the red-links into a list (for now). After most of the articles have been made (however long that takes), I suggest the list be deleted as the category is pretty much sufficient. Anyway, I'm currently working on Czech composers, but as soon as I feel tired-out in that section, I'll come here and start making author articles. It's hard to do it alone though, so hopefully you'll be in the mood for some article-making too. I see your name is Daniel - is that common in Czechia now? I guess they got tired of using "Jan", "Josef", and "Vaclav" :P Antidote

Yes, I reverted the German list, which is now pretty good I think, but not useable on the English Wikipedia. Anyway, I've been working on creating Czech writer stubs for some time now. See my user page (Created articles) about that. But I would certainly welcome your help, if you're interested in the topic. You could use "my" articles as a template, so that we can keep one style of the stubs. However, I disagree that the list should be deleted afterwords. It can be useful. There're also quite a lot of featured lists on Wikipedia. IMHO a list of writers can hardly be promoted to the featured level, but it can still be well done.

Daniel is a common Czech name. It's been among the 10 most frequent names given to newly born (male) children for some time. The name is not entirely new in Czech, though. Compare Daniel Adam z Veleslavína (1546 – 1599). Daniel Šebesta (talk • contribs) 08:07, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jazyky? Zatím ne. Já teď spíš uvažuju o maturitě a o tom, jak ji skloubit se svojí prací. Na české Wikipedii teď mám rozepsanej větší článek o bohemistice. Zatím jsem se dostal jenom k historii oboru (a ta taky ještě není dokončená), ale chtěl bych tam psát i o současnejch pracovištích a odbornících, o bohemistice v zahraničí apod. Pak se chystám na podobný články o germanistice a slavistice. A pak by se dalo uvažovat o portálu (ale musím se přiznat, že mě to doteď ani nenapadlo). Howto get more users to discuss[edit]

Is there any way to get more user to discuss something? I deleted some information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Germans_after_World_War_II as I found that the information it contained was not only unsourced, but also not verifiable by googling the terms. However, one user reverted my edit and claimed that I am pushing my POV. I feel that I should somehow attract more (and preferably not only czech) users to participate in the discussion. Berlin state election 2001[edit]

Regarding your request about the table, well, there -is- one - at Berlin state election, 2001 (note the additional comma!) already. It seems the original creator of the article sans comma didn't bother to check the Elections in Germany list first. Prokop Sedivy[edit]

Hi Antidote! I've just edited the article about Prokop Šedivý that you recently created. Could you please give a source saying that he wrote The Czech Amazons (1792)? I have consulted several Czech sources but haven't found this work in any of them. Anyway, he wasn't that famous. Hi! Thanks for the source. I wouldn't say he was unimportant. I guess Czechs were particularly proud of his plays during the National Revival era, when there were very few plays and books in Czech. But from today's point of view, his position is the Czech literature is much lower. That's why I changed your sentence in the article into "a significant playwright (...) of the National Revival era," which is undoubtedly true. Anyway, thanks for the new article! If you don't mind, I'll try to keep up with you and occassionally add and/or correct some information in articles about Czech people, esp. writers. Have a nice evening. British spelling is accepted on the English-language Wikipedia. I myself prefer American spelling, but I cannot make others use it and I am not expected to change all spellings to the American version. Hi! I consider it absolutely okay, mainly for two reasons.

It is important to know what publisher published the books, whether it was e.g. OUP or an only locally significant publishing house.
Stating the name of the publisher gives the information more credibility. You can easily go and find the books online. (Giving the ISBN would be even more appropriate.)

Furthermore, his user page doesn't give a positive review of the books, nor promotes them in any way; it's only a list. Thus, I can't see any commercial usage. On the contrary, it's interesting and relevant information about the user, because you can find out more about his fields of expertise. "RVV"[edit]

You might want to be a bit more careful in using that in edit summaries. According to Wikipedia:Vandalism vandalism is: any addition, deletion, or change to content, made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of the encyclopedia. You used "RVV" as an edit summary for the following edit summary where an IP changed "centers" to "centres". [5] Centre is just the British way of spelling center so I don't think that the IP was engaging in actual vandalism.
