Hi! Thanks for responding so quickly! The issue with the page is that it violates Wikipedia policy of what one cannot have in their userspace. Again, I'll refer you to this, which will outline what is and what isn't appropriate content to have in userspace. Wikipedia is not a blog, nor is it a proper forum for two users to carry on professing their love for one another. Though endearing, it has no place in an encyclopedia. When you check out the link I provided, please be sure to take a look at the bulletpoints. I felt it might be in your best interests to approach you directly rather than proposing the page for MfD or the like, as the content is personal and you and the other primary contributor might not want the community scrutinizing the content to determine whether it should or shouldn't be hosted by Wikipedia. Might I suggest using the telephone, or if long distance charges are a problem, Skype (which is free voice chat) or AOL Instant Messenger (free text chat). Just wanted to let you know that your comment over on AfD StarCraft etc was an excellent one. I'm still very new to WP, but it seems like most discussions are either very obvious or very polarized. And many of the polarized ones seem to quickly fall to the level of a 1st grader: "Cruft...but Foo has these articles...NN...how can a TypeofFoo which sold Blee units be NN?...*sigh*" But your comment about chess and its larger impact to society in an excellent one. It is totally universal and (should) be easily understood by all. If anyone tips their head to the side and gives you the dumb puppy stare after being exposed to this comment, they can just go. Hi! First off, please don't think I'm watching your every move! I have your talk page on my watchlist and saw that an unregistered user made an edit and I was curious. A bit of advice; deleting a huge edit withough explanation is bad form. Also, your comments (Wikipedia is not a travel guide. Please do not add tourist information to articles, like you did to Bavaria.) were a bit harsh. I feel that the pictures are amazing and add a lot to the article. At the very least, it was a great effort on the part of the IP user to make a phenomenal addition to Wikipedia. It was definitely not tourist information. I'd advise restoring the pictures or explaining on the talk page how it violates policies. Sure, I'd be happy to elaborate. My only issue was that the Bavaria edits were the user's first and only two edits. As such, being reverted without any real explanation other than his work being called unwanted due to its potentially touristy nature is discouraging. I'm aware that the message you left was probably a template or widely-used message, but sometimes a more human touch is needed. If you thought the edits inappropriate, I feel that a better explanation was necessary. The edits probably took a significant amount of time in terms of formatting and collecting the information. In addition, the edits could've been viewed with the benefit of the doubt as adding culture, history, and color to the article (rather than tourism information). Also, if you thought the pictures a bit much, you could've pointed the user to the Commons so others could enjoy his work. I've been quick to revert anonymous IP's before, as I'm sure most Wikipedians have at one time or another, so it's an easy "mistake" to make (if that's the label we're using). The mistake, however, could be potentially damaging to the new user and perhaps discourage him/her from editing again. The frustration of the new user is understandable but his insult to you on your talk page was not (which was what led me to look at his edits in the first place). "Harsh" was probably bad diction on my part, and I apologise. My intention was to convey that his edits were a bit overlooked or not treated the same as an edit by an established editor perhaps. To put it in perspective, would you have reverted the edits if Yanksox, Crzrussian, or another established editor made them? Again, being quick on the draw, so to speak is something everyone has done (myself included). The only reason I mentioned the incident to you is that it could've lost us an editor. Also, to clear things up, I'm not an administrator and seniority isn't really that big a deal, which is kind of the point I was trying to make. Before I say anything else, let me say that I find it extremely offensive that you apparently do not think this is a mistake I made in good faith. (See your comment: "so it's an easy "mistake" to make".)

To continue, I must disagree with the majority of your comments. First of all, the message I left was not a template. I never use templates (other than welcome templates, which I personalize) unless I absolutely must or they fit the situation to a letter. I feel they're impersonal, kind of like an answering machine, so I only use them in cases of obvious vandalism. Second of all, yes, I may have reverted such edits by an established user. They are beautiful pictures, but they do not add encyclopedic material to the article. They are only labeled as what they are, with no explanation. I am not very familiar with the Commons because as my computer has a low bandwith and little memory, I cannot view more than perhaps a dozen pictures per page. I also must assure you that I do not jump the gun on anonymous edits. If you were to look at my contributions, you'd see that most of my edits are not vandal fighting at all, but wikification, copyediting, and XfD discussions. My computer just is not fast enough for vandal fighting, with so many talented vandal fighters (and their more capable computers, although fortunately I'll have a new computer and Firefox by the end of August).

I take pride in never biting the newcomers. That is why I rarely use a warning template; I personalize my messages and assume the very best intentions. About two months ago when I was a newcomer, I certainly felt bitten by a certain editor, and so make a point of being extremely kind. I also try to take notice of others' hard work by leaving messages on their talk pages, because it seems to me that it is very difficult to be noticed on Wikipedia unless you are in a certain clique or do something wrong. Hi there! I apologise if you thought I assumed that you were not acting in good faith. I thought I made that apparent in that I mentioned that it's a very common thing to do (something I've done in the past). I guess we have different views on the whole thing (mine is apparently wrong); first, I thought you were just a bit quick to jump the gun as your message, as the pictures were very hard work and there was no explanation of reverting (except for dismissing the edits as a travel guide while citing WP:NOT on user's talk page), you used javascripts (where slipping is easy to do as reverting is quick and easy), the edit was a user's first, you mentioned that some of the pictures should indeed be kept on the Bavaria talk page, the editor hasn't edited since with that IP, etcetera, etcetera. As far as I can surmise, you feel that it was simply a straight-up case of a content issue. This is fine and I apologise for assuming otherwise. This being the case, any large removal of content is usually discussed on the talk page and travel guide information seems to be an inappropriate label (to me, at least). I was unaware that you were unfamiliar with the Commons and I apologise for assuming that (again!). For future reference, it's nice to point the user in that direction if you feel a picture or gallery is not needed. I apologise once more that you're a bit jaded with Wikipedia and feel that there's a cliquey nature. I agree that a lot of good work goes unnoticed, however, and we should all probably take some time out to recognise all the good works and the many hours of Wikipedians valuable time that are being volunteered by some great people (you're one of them, of course!) To be clear, my only intention to ensure that the IP editor did not leave Wikipedia because of the encounter (he apparently has left, which is too bad). It was never my intention nor my will to chastise you or somehow point out what I believed to be an error on your part; it was simply an issue of the new user. For what it's worth, I think you're a talented editor and if you think that you were bitten by me two months ago, I'll refer you to Yanksox, Crzrussian, or any other user you think has a handle on policy and they'll explain that there was no biting going on ;) I do hope that there is no animosity between us and I have a lot of respect for some of your favourite Wikipedians, so I hope that we too, could form a Wiki-relationship, as well! I certainly concede your point that perhaps it was wrong of me to use JS. I am sorry that the user has apparently left, but I am not convinced that it was because of me. Many users edit once or twice and then leave. In any case, I'm planning on leaving a message on the user's page to apologize. As far as your biting goes...I still believe the userpage policy is a little vague, and when there are people with 20-odd subpages, I don't see what a small sub-talk page is going to hurt. For the record, Yanksox is my (very) long-time (real life) boyfriend and we've talked about it several times. Without disclosing it, I believe I know his opinion on the matter quite well. In any case, I have dropped the issue, but I would like to make the point that while you accuse me of scaring off a newcomer (by applying a policy), you have done the same thing with a different result: I remained at Wikipedia, largely because I'm not easily discouraged.

All that aside, I would value your Wikifriendship very much as I consider you an experienced, knowledgeable, reasonable and intelligent person. Hey again! Sure, I never meant to pigeonhole you and say that your actions were directly what caused the user to leave. You're right about users sometimes making a few edits and leaving and of course ultimately one is in complete control of one's actions (especially so on a web site). To make things clear, I felt that the WP:NOT policy you used to explain the revert didn't apply in the IP user's case (which is fine on on both our parts, as consensus is usually used to determine if policy applies and we were the only two debating it so of course there could be no consensus). In regards to the old user page, this is the policy and bulletpoints 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 applied (rather specifically so). Feel free to ask an administrator who can view the deleted page for another opinion if you want. If you still feel that Wikipedia policy permits the page, definitely feel free to recreate it if you want (I won't say or do anything and I will probably never notice it). Again, I assure you there was no biting on my part; feel free to check out the e-mail exchange between your boyfriend and I if he's willing and if he still has it in his box (that is, you won't be invading my privacy or anything like that). I think you'll see that my intentions were of a good sort and actually had nothing to do with you as a person. The issue was with a concern I had and what I thought was an obvious policy issue (there was a reason I asked you privately on your talk page rather than just throwing it up for MfD, ya know!). With that, I hope all of our previous issues are in the past and are really no big deal (that's how I feel). I truly appreciate your comments and willingness to be friends. It means a lot! To use an oft-said phrase of mine, cheers mate!

I decided that we shouldn't indent any further; we'll soon be writing in a column! :P Anyway, I reviewed the conversation quite some time ago, and I agree with some points, but disagree on some others. The policy simply isn't upheld on a whole and to be honest, I'm not sure I agree with it - there should be a limit on the number of subpages one should be able to have, although even that isn't quite fair, because some users simply have extremely lengthy userpages. Additionally, (I hope this isn't offensive!) I certainly know Yanksox better than anyone here (25 months will do that to you) and have discussed the matter with him at further length than anyone else. Anyway, as I say, I have dropped the matter entirely for several reasons (among them that visits have recently become more frequent than once weekly and that I must admit that I hope to one day be an admin myself) and merely brought it up to make an example.

On an unrelated matter, if I may ask, what precisely is a "wiseacre"? I know what the anonymous user's second "w" word means, but I thought wiseacre was made up.

Vandaliser Won't Quit Making Vandal Edits

Currently on the mama's family page, I have made an edit that keeps getting erased by DtownG. He keeps referring to mama as proactive. This is a word that doesn't describe Mama whatsoever. I have watched all 135 episodes umpteen times and I know this. I even tried to discuss this matter very civilly with him and argue my points, and after few responses he just decided he was going to continually keep changing it to proactive just to avoid being deferential. This is a battle to him, not an attempt to use the right word. Could you please look at our discussion on the talk page of mama's family and see what I have said to argue my points. After he saw this and saw that it made sense, he said oh well, I will just keep putting my word down regardless if it makes sense. That is what his behavior is like.

Maybe I won't need your help after all. He seems to be willing to talk this out now

What sourced statement? I did not remove a sourced statement. The previous editor claims that Jack the Ripper's identity has not been determined. This is just his opinion. There are any number of people who think his identity has been determined (of course they don;t agree on what that identity is), and one of them may actually be right. Saying that it has not been determined is saying that they are all wrong, which violates the WP:NPOV policy. You're welcome! The one change I didn't make is to the {{PAGENAME}} variable. Using this variable can produce unwanted results:

• The welcomed user will see the {{PAGENAME}} code if he clicks "edit this page"
• If the welcome is archived, the {{PAGENAME}} variable won't make sense, since it will change to reflect the name of the archived page.

For these reasons, you should consider substituting the {{PAGENAME}}, by using {{<includeonly>SUBST:</includeonly>PAGENAME}} instead of {{PAGENAME}}. If you do this, the following series of events will occur when you substitute the template onto someone's talk page:

• {{PAGENAME}} finds the name of the user (e.g., "Jimbo Wales"). See m:Help:Magic words for more info. However, it does not make a permanent copy of this finding - it stays as a variable. If you look at the source code of the page at this point, you would see {{PAGENAME}}, not Jimbo Wales.
• To fix this, SUBST: takes the found username, and converts it from a variable into normal text. See Wikipedia:Template substitution for how this works. Now, the source code shows Jimbo Wales.
• However, the problem is that SUBST: doesn't know that you only want it to run when you put it on a talk page. In fact, it would run as soon as you made the change to the template, and result in something like Template:Welcome on the template itself. Then the {{PAGENAME}} variable would be gone, and the template wouldn't work right. To fix this, put <includeonly> and </includeonly> around the SUBST:. Now, the SUBST: runs only when you use it on a different page - the user's talk page. Caution: this only works for substituted templates! For more info about <includeonly>, see Wikipedia:Variable#Substitution.

First, those four criteria (first, unique, membership numbers, language) are not mentioned in WP:WEB. Second, Wikispaces qualifies under at least a couple of those criteria certainly more than several of the others do. We have several unique characteristics and we're certainly of a size to be notable.

Seems to me there are two real objections to the Wikispaces entry.

1) It's "advertising". That's valid to an extent. I think the appropriate response is to rewrite the entry so that it's informative rather than advertising.

2) It's not "notable". We're clearly as notable or more than most of those other entries. It's going to take a long time for me to convince anyone of that in this forum but it's true. It's certainly reasonable that plenty of people haven't heard of us but that doesn't mean we're not notable in the eyes of many people.

Heya, I've updated your edit count using Flcelloguy's tool, since you asked so nicely. :) You might be able to do it yourself, though, using something like Interiot's Tool 2 - it uses Javascript, so it should run just fine in your web browser. Unfortunately, it can be very slow: my 1.33Ghz G4 laptop takes around ten seconds to run through ~2700 edits, so if your computer is much slower than that, it might not be feasible at all. Heya, I've updated your edit count using Flcelloguy's tool, since you asked so nicely. :) You might be able to do it yourself, though, using something like Interiot's Tool 2 - it uses Javascript, so it should run just fine in your web browser. Unfortunately, it can be very slow: my 1.33Ghz G4 laptop takes around ten seconds to run through ~2700 edits, so if your computer is much slower than that, it might not be feasible at all. RfA and not needing tools

Srose, let me begin by saying I'm not here to dispute your weak oppose of Stevie's RFA. I was curious, however, about a position I see frequently. RFA participants often say that someone shouldn't be made an admin b/c they don't need the tools, even though they won't abuse them, that all of the tasks they are working on can be accomplished without the bit. I've never understood it, though I may well have missed something. What's the rationale behind it? You can reply here. Thanks.--Kchase T 19:07, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

• Essentially, my rationale is that the community doesn't need to hand out tools to folks who are high quality contributors (much like Stevie - please see my excessively lengthy message on his talk page) when others who actually do admin-like jobs would like them and be more deserving of them. We already have too many admins that do not regularly use the tools. Adminship isn't an elevated status. Admins are merely a group of users who do extremely behind-the-scenes work: closing XfDs (see WP:AfD and its backlog - if it still has one; it changes by the hour), warning and blocking vandals (Wikipedia:Blocking policy), reverting vandalism (administrators have a tool to revert that is much faster than any of those available to non-admins), answering newcomers' questions, deleting non-controversial pages (see WP:CSD), protecting pages that are receiving high amounts of vandalism (like Elephant, after that infamous Colbert Report), and negotiating compromises for users in conflicts. As Stevie rarely does some of these things (and never does the rest), I just don't think he needs the mop and flamethrower. Adminship isn't a reward for particularly good editors: it's an added list of duties for those who have experience in admin areas (XfD, WP:3O, WP:MEDCAB, vandalism) and are trusted enough by the community to have the ability to block users, delete articles, close XfDs and protect articles.   • There's also JS-assisted non-admin rollback. I've been using it for a while now. Anyway, I should have been more specific, but I think it's just because we disagree. To me, it seems like an inefficient use of community time to evaluate a candidate and then not give them the tools because they will rarely use them, even though they will not abuse them. Perhaps the reason for such voting is more global: to discourage RFAs from good editors who don't need the tools and thereby encourage RFAs from folks who are more keen to help with our backlogs?--Kchase T 20:00, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
    • That last sentence is exactly it, boiled down to a drop. I guess I went on a bit long, huh? Well, in any case, I imagine Stevie's RfA will succeed, just looking at the pattern thus far, and I wish him all the best of luck. I would like to see more candidates who are intent on helping behind the scenes with backlogs, etc., because essentially, that's the entire difference between an admin and a regular, registered user.
