ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Calidum. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi there, I just wanted to have that content(best films and it's decade) to Legacy section. Here after I won't remove contents. Thanks. Ashokkumar47 (talk) 07:58, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

I think the text in question is best left where it is. Plus, you didn’t add it to the legacy section or explain why you removed the text. Calidum 18:12, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

December 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2018 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2018 GOCE newsletter. Here is what's been happening since the August edition.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the August blitz (results), which focused on Requests and the oldest backlog month. Of the twenty editors who signed up, eleven editors recorded 37 copy edits.

For the September drive (results), of the twenty-three people who signed up, nineteen editors completed 294 copy edits.

Our October blitz (results) focused on Requests, geography, and food and drink articles. Of the fourteen people who signed up, eleven recorded a total of 57 copy edits.

For the November drive (results), twenty-two people signed up, and eighteen editors recorded 273 copy edits. This helped to bring the backlog to a six-month low of 825 articles.

The December blitz will run for one week, from 16 to 22 December. Sign up now!

Elections: Nominations for the Guild's coordinators for the first half of 2019 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations, so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Miniapolis and Tdslk.

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 13

Newsletter • December 2018

This month: A general update.

The current status of the project is as follows:

  • Progress of the project has been generally delayed since September due to development issues (more bitrot than expected, some of the code just being genuinely confusing, etc) and personal injury (I suffered a concussion in October and was out of commission for almost two months as a result).
  • I currently expect to be putting out a proper call for CollaborationKit pilots in January/February, with estimated deployment in February/March if things don't go horribly wrong (they will, though, don't worry). As a part of that, I will properly update the page and send out announcement and reach out to all projects already signed up as pilots for WikiProject X in general, at which point those (still) interested can volunteer specifically to test the CollaborationKit extension.
    • Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Pilots was originally created for the first WikiProject X prototype, and given this is where the project has since gone, it's only logical to continue to use it. While I haven't yet updated the page to properly reflect this:
    • If you want to add your project to this page now, feel free. Just bear in mind that more information what to actually expect will be added later/included in the announcement, because by then I will have a much better idea myself.
  • Until then, you can find me in my corner working on making the CollaborationKit code do what we want and not just what we told it, per the workboard.

Until next time,

-— Isarra 22:44, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Style

Calidum, I don't understand how you can be a WikiGnome and a member of the GOCE and still be so often opposed to following the guidance of the MOS. Do you have your own style you're trying to promulgate, or what? Dicklyon (talk) 17:52, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

I only really disagree with some of the capitalization rules in the MOS, because I believe the rules aren’t in line with how independent, reliable sources treat certain things. This applies to things such as four-letter prepositions that are often capped in sources (including so-called high quality ones) but which the MOS says not to cap, and the mess that is MOS:JOBTITLES where instances that are not capped off Wikipedia are capped on here. (To be honest, I had thought about a formal RFC to change that rule as well, but I’m getting tired being called of Anti-MOS agitator but some users.) As for things like subway lines and vehicles (the reason why I assume you came to my talk page), you and I just disagree and what is or isn’t a proper noun. Calidum 18:26, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Administrator changes

Interface administrator changes

removedEnterprisey

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Taylor Swift

I've noticed that you reverted Bryantriplex twice before, and I've reverted him once, all for the same reasons on the same article. From what I've seen, he's constantly warned about not discussing, not summarizing edits, edit warring and making continuous unconstructive edits. He seems to ignore everyone else, despite being blocked before. Is there anything we can do that doesn't involve giving him a warning that is going to be ignored? Regards. Calebh12 (talk) 10:56, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

I didn't realize he had a history of trying to make that change. I guess we could warn him if he does it again, but there isn't really much else we can do. Calidum 04:07, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – March 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • A new tool is available to help determine if a given IP is an open proxy/VPN/webhost/compromised host.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).
    • paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private evidence related to abusive paid editing.
    • checkuser-en-wp@wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private requests for CheckUser. For instance, requests for IP block exemption for anonymous proxy editing should now be sent to this address instead of the functionaries-en list.

March GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2018. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2019, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work in January's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from all of the articles tagged in our original target months of June, July and August 2018, and by 24 January we ran out of articles. After adding September, we finished the month with 8 target articles remaining and 842 left in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 48 requests for copyedit in January. Of the 31 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the February Blitz. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 32 copyedits, including 15 requests. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 23:39, 18 March 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 108 requests since 1 January and the backlog stands at 851 articles.

March Drive: The month-long March drive is now underway; the target months are October and November 2018. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Sign up here!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

Administrators' newsletter – April 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2019).

Technical news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Two more administrator accounts were compromised. Evidence has shown that these attacks, like previous incidents, were due to reusing a password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. All admins are strongly encouraged to enable two-factor authentication, please consider doing so. Please always practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
  • As a reminder, according to WP:NOQUORUM, administrators looking to close or relist an AfD should evaluate a nomination that has received few or no comments as if it were a proposed deletion (PROD) prior to determining whether it should be relisted.

A moment of diff reading shock

Hi Calidum. I have seen you around, but I don't recall us every directly conversing. I suffered a moment of shock reading this diff, but I am pretty sure you were not talking to me, and I my heart rate is returning to normal. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 01:46, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Rest assured I was not. Calidum 02:54, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

I don't think that close was a good judgment call. Three people made comments that seemed in favor of the proposal, and one opposed. The one that opposed did not respond after someone replied to their comment, which seemed rather weak to me. To me it appears that the RM should have been kept open longer or should have been closed in favor of HMS Wager incident. The accusation of mutiny was clearly not supported by the law, and is an extremely serious allegation to accuse people of. I suggest reopening it. If you do, I plan to explicitly express support for the move. —BarrelProof (talk) 02:49, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Feel free to start a new request, but I don't believe there was consensus in the last discussion nor did I feel it was necessary to keep it open any longer. Calidum 15:23, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Boxing Day shooting

Good day. Is there a reason why this was not listed a second time? --Jax 0677 (talk) 13:51, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

It was already relisted once and the discussion was pretty much dead. Calidum 18:35, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
  • Reply - The point of relisting is to generate more discussion, and in my opinion, the discussion should be listed a second time. --Jax 0677 (talk) 15:16, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

Saint Peter

Did you miss that in the (closed yesterday) RM from Saint Peter to Peter, it was requested that when not happy with Peter, one should request a different target? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:58, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Yes, I had the same question. Please rethink this close. StAnselm (talk) 18:18, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
  • I did see the previous close, but the suggestion to start a “new RM using a multiple choice ranked survey” was inappropriate and quite frankly just a way to get the community to test out his proposal made here. This is counter to WP:NOTLAB (in spirit at least). The RM I closed was also the eleventh such discussion regarding the article in question, all of which have had the same result. At some point enough is enough, and filing a new request the day after a month-long discussion is borderline disruptive. Let’s all move on. Calidum 19:02, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm sorry, it is probably right that I should have waited a month or so before starting a new discussion. However, not only the individual who closed the move, but also another user in the discussion, said to close down the original discussion early so a new one can be started. But it's fine; I agree, it's best to move on. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 22:30, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
You know, I might have been a little harsh in calling your request borderline disruptive, but my concerns about the prior closing statement and the new RM still stand. Calidum 00:12, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
Well, it's been reopened, was that your work? --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 17:53, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up. It was not me. Calidum 17:56, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
