GA reassessment of Toki Pona[edit]

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article following a request on the talk page. You are being notified as your project's banner is on the article talk page. I have found some concerns which you can see at Talk:Toki Pona/GA2. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 00:41, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Taoism articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release[edit]

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Taoism articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:41, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I can see no particular reason to oppose any of those selected, but I would welcome any input of any other parties as to whether there are additional articles they think may have been excluded. John Carter (talk) 15:26, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Several of these proposed "Taoism articles" only marginally refer to Taoism. Emperor Wen of Sui was more of a Buddhist, Xingyiquan mentions Taoist cosmology once, Shen Kuo only has the "Song Dynasty Taoists" category, and the constructed language Toki Pona was "inspired by Taoist philosophy, among other things". Perhaps some better articles could be found in the Portal:Taoism. Keahapana (talk) 00:47, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed that many of the articles selected are only peripheral in many cases. They are however evidently tagged with the Taoism banner, and were selected on the basis of their overall importance, whether that related directly to Taoism or not. However, if you do have specific suggestions in mind, I would be glad to suggest them for inclusion. John Carter (talk) 14:31, 24 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed expansion of scope[edit]

I have proposed possibly expanding the scope of this project, and a few others. For the purposes of centralized discussion, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Religion#Possible reorganization of some related projects. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 15:57, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for more eyes on the above article, which touches on Taoist ideas about longevity. There are disputes about the scope of the article - is it original synthesis, and on the appropriate sources. Please do come over and comment. Also threads at Fringe theories noticeboard. Itsmejudith (talk) 23:10, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For this page, someone should read and summarize the work of the late Monica Esposito (formerly of Kyoto University) and other experts on Quanzhen Daoism, such as Stephen Eskildsen (University of Tennessee) and Louis Komjathy (University of San Diego).

Proposed annual interreligious discussion[edit]

I have proposed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Religion#Annual meeting? that there be some sort of annual discussion, possibly on a special page, for discussion of religious material here in wikipedia. Any input there would be more than welcome. Thank you. John Carter (talk) 19:37, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request for input in discussion forum[edit]

Given the closely linked subjects of the various religion, mythology, and philosophy groups, it seems to me that we might benefit from having some sort of regular topical discussion forum to discuss the relevant content. I have put together the beginnings of an outline for such discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/2011 meeting, and would very much appreciate the input of any interested editors. I am thinking that it might run over two months, the first of which would be to bring forward and discuss the current state of the content, and the second for perhaps some more focused discussion on what, if any, specific efforts might be taken in the near future. Any and all input is more than welcome. John Carter (talk)

Proposed change in scope and name of group[edit]

This group seems to have been very inactive of late. Part of that might be, unfortunately, that Taoism per se is a rather abstruse subject. So far as I can tell, Taoism may have been, basically, integrated into the broader field of Chinese folk religion some time ago. Much, if not most, of that broader subject also relates to Taoism, as most aspects of Chinese folk religion include Taoist material. Also, I think having a group which specifically includes subjects like Confucianism and other Chinese traditions would also be useful.

I propose that the name of this group be changed either to Chinese religion, or, possibly, Religion in China. I personally would prefer the latter, as it seems to me that perhaps even some of the other religious traditions which have figured strongly in the history of China, including the Assyrian Church of the East, and maybe some of the other groups which have been found to be "evil cults" according to the PRC will also have a lot of crossover material in content relevant to modern Chinese religion. I would very much welcome any input. John Carter (talk) 21:09, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm not sure that changing the scope of the project will have any effect on activity. Sadly the number of people who are capable of contributing to this topic is rather low. I was once more active here, but alas, after I lost access to the university library upon graduation, I also lost the the ability to write good articles. My only concern in changing the scope is that if you include all Chinese religions, you will need to include Islam, Christianity and Buddhism. Perhaps a better way to put it would be rename the project 'Traditional Chinese Religions.Zeus1234 (talk) 03:55, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually, I was rather intentionally considering at least the possibility of including Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism. There already are separate, admittedly not particularly active, groups on Christianity in China, Tibetan Buddhism, and the Falun Gong. But in many of these cases these topics do share something in common - some degree of problem with the government of the PRC. At least in that regard, it might help if there were some degree of cooperation on the topic. The Human Rights Torch Relay and Tibetan Freedom Relay, for example, were both covered rather extensively at the time of the last Olympics, often in the same articles. There seems to be some similar overlap in some other material relating to these groups as well. I do not believe that this content should be over emphasized, but there is the apparent overlap. And I'm not sure exactly how to define Chinese folk religion or whatever the related term is. Anyway, that was why I was considering the broader topic. John Carter (talk) 15:40, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your proposal sounds worthwhile but reaches much wider than Daoist philosophy and religion. Rather than renaming this moribund WikiProject, it might be better to start a more general one on Chinese religions. You could make the proposal on WP:CHINA and WP:RELIGION (which lists "Chinese folk religion" as a potential work group) to determine levels of interest. Also, for an excellent (though somewhat dated) overview of Daoism, I recommend Holmes Welch's Taoism: The Parting of the Way. Keahapana (talk) 20:10, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm actually the person who first proposed the various work groups of the Religion Project, so know about the proposal. And it is a rather common practice these days in several projects to attempt to revive groups by either exppansion or other means. Personally, given that in practice, so far as I can tell, many of the "Taoist" temples also include other religions, it seems somewhat logical to me to make the expansion to Chinese folk religion, which includes all of those sites, and potentially other subjects as well. John Carter (talk) 21:57, 16 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pinyin vs Wade-Giles at Taiji/T'ai chi[edit]

It has been proposed in that Taiji be renamed and moved to Taiji (concept) because T'ai chi ch'uan, “T'ai chi”, is arguably the WP:PRIME target for English speakers. Misspellings, pinyin and Wade-Giles renditions of a word all mean exactly the same thing, however, an "RfD" on certain redirects, seeks to avoid the WP:PRIME guideline by an admittedly fictional distinction: “Pinyin vs Wade-Giles is an unfortunate circumstance brought about by laymen, but the truth is that the (usage) ambiguity surrounds the Wade-Giles version(s), so sadly the line is actually between pinyin & WG, when there shouldn't even be one”.—Machine Elf 1735 21:34, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Dao of Wikipedia" ;)[edit]

I had a little fun writing an essay WP:Dao of Wikipedia. I'm not really very knowledgeable, though, so if someone wants to look it over to make sure I haven't been too stupid or even offensive about it, it would be most welcome. Wnt (talk) 15:09, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Wnt, this is a great idea. Some suggested changes would be adding "The" to the title, removing the Wenyen punctuation, and changing "three million" to "myriad." Best wishes, Keahapana (talk) 20:08, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead with the second two suggestions; I'm not sure about moving the page since it makes it marginally harder to Wikilink. Thanks! Wnt (talk) 05:41, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Improving taijiquan lineage trees[edit]

Please assist by weighing in on the new proposed lineage trees. I'm in need of assistance with gathering information on the lineages and constructive feedback.

Proposed MOS for Religion[edit]

There is now a proposed general Manual of Style for Religion and other articles relating to ethoses or belief systems at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Manual of style. Any input would be welcome. I personally believe at least one of the reasons why many articles in this field have been as contentious as they have been is because of lack of such guidelines, and would very much welcome any input from others to help come up with some generally acceptable solutions to some of these problems. John Carter (talk) 22:06, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Taoism/Tao Te Ching[edit]

FYI, both Taoism and Tao Te Ching have been proposed to be renamed to the Pinyin romanization, see Talk:Tao Te Ching -- 76.65.131.248 (talk) 22:40, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of articles in reference books[edit]

I am in the process of going through various print reference sources relating to the religion and individual religions, and making lists of the articles they contain, as well as some indication of the relative length of those articles and of any subarticles they might have. I have just started a list for this project at Wikipedia:WikiProject Taoism/Encyclopedic articles, and will try to add material from other sources as I can go through them. But I believe that having such lists will not only make it easier to determine what should be contained in a given article, but also which topics might be notable enough to have spinout articles from existing articles, and which topics might not yet be covered at all. I hope to be adding to the list with similar lists of articles from other reference sources in the next few months as well. John Carter (talk) 21:35, 10 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Uniformation of names of Chinese gods[edit]

At the present state, we have a great variability in the titles of articles about Chinese gods (ex. Erlang Shen, Caishen, Lei Gong...).

I suggest to adopt a regulation, with the -shen version of names and diacritical pinyin as standards, for example:

The use of diacritics would also resolve the problem of homography in non-diacritical pinyin of many of these gods' names, for example the 雨神 Yushen (Rain God), and the 狱神 Yushen (Purgatory God), which with diacritics would be, respectively Yǔshén and Yùshén.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 15:45, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Uniformation of names of Taoist sects[edit]

At the moment there isn't a standard of style for the name of articles about the Taoist schools. We have full translations such as Way of the Five Pecks of Rice or Dragon Gate Taoism, semi-translated titles such as Shangqing School and Quanzhen School, and untranslated names such as Zhengyi Dao and Wuliupai (also styling pinyin differently, the former separating the concepts, the latter not).

A regulation would put an order into this confusion. What I suggest is to adopt a regulation that would distinguish the name of recognized Taoist sects from the many folk religions:

  • Solution n.1: 全真道 Quanzhendao → article title: Quanzhen Taoism
  • Solution n.2: full translation: 全真道 Quanzhendao → article title: Full Reality Taoism

Solution 1 would be the best choice, since Chinese characters usually translate an entire semantic field of Western languages and not single words. Full translation would generate controversies in translating, for example, Quanzhendao as Full Reality Way rather than Full Truth Way, and so on.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 15:57, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is a dormant project[edit]

This Wiki-Project Taoism has been inactive for a very long time now, and the articles about Taoism, schools and deities, are in an atrocious state.

I think that the best solution at this point would be to transform Wiki-Project Taoism into Wiki-Project Chinese religion, that would extend its scope to all other forms of Chinese religion and religion in China. This would, perhaps, attract a larger base of active contributors.--Aethelwolf Emsworth (talk) 19:18, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject[edit]

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background[edit]

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:57, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A new newsletter directory is out![edit]

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool[edit]

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
