It's a subtle distinction: they are *not* luminescent themselves, but by being placed in close proximity to luciferase, they are able to take the electron (through FRET; often called BRET in this case) from the excited luciferin substrate, preventing non-emission forms of electron relaxation. undo Tag: Visual edit
