Given I'm not entirely certain what to do, now, with a personal-attack-fest I've stumbled into with User:IZAK. Would you mind reviewing the discussion at both this VfD and his talk, and give me an idea as to what Wikipedians're supposed to do in such situations? To which I have no reply except: Umm, what? I thought that protecting was meant to be the uber-last resort, and highly temporary. The edit history seems to indicate that there was one vandalism over a week ago. If I'm totally wrong (as is often the case) tell me. It's a real shame that I've managed to twist your knickers the first time we interact, and I'm sorry that I was brusque. It's a total non-issue, I simply thought it was odd. I have unblocked Ril.

While I can appreciate your frustration, and while you are correct that Ril's relisting of Authentic Matthew was uncalled for, a block is not a suitable response.

The "disruption" provision of Wikipedia:Bans and blocks is intended to stop users who can't be stopped any other way. I don't believe that Ril is in that category. I also believe that there was insufficient warning and discussion before the block.

I will be watching Ril and will remove any VfD listing he makes for Authentic Matthew myself.

What -Ril- did with relisting was foolish, but I, too, wondered about its rising to the level of a block. It seemed more rational just to delist the article. What's foolish is that there really isn't any need for a new VfD. It would be possible to do a merge, with deletions from the article as bits were merged, and an edit making the suspect article simply say, "The term "Authentic Matthew" is used by some to refer to an hypothetical Book of Matthew. See the discussions under Book of Matthew and Jerome for more." No VfD involved, and yet the damage is undone, and I can't imagine the case anyone could make opposing it. Anyway, the article is very bad, and there is no way any of the "keep" voters were in accord with policy, but their inability to follow policy doesn't allow -Ril- to break policy by relisting it, I agree. Authentic Matthe (again)

  • I recognise that there was no consensus to delete this article – and that is unlikely to change. But I still have grave concerns about it. I did warn –Ril- that his involvement in the second re-listing was likely to be counterproductive [2] but to no avail. I am left wondering how many of the ‘keep’ votes were influenced by –Ril-‘s antics. But getting this article right is more important that –Ril-‘s behaviour.

Looking at the last vote Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Authentic Matthew 21d , 12k, 4m – I note that 4 of the ‘keep votes’ expressed a desire for a renaming. So that would indicate a 29-8 feeling that it was undesirable to have this article at this name. I'm wondering, whether as an impartial observer, you would consider that a fair interpretation of the debate?

Is there room for an acceptable compromise? I’d like to move it to Possible origins of Matthew’s Gospel and place it the context of the real scholarly debate on Matthew. There would some overlap with both the Gospel of Matthew and Synoptic problem – but that I for one could live with. I could just ‘be bold’ and do this, but it is likely to be reverted, and I’m likely to get abuse (from a mountain of socks), – so I’m looking for some agreement that this has a consensus – preferably from some of those who didn’t vote ‘delete’. The elements of your screen name look like pinyin characters of Mandarin Chinese, but I have only taken one semester in college, at The Florida State University, and I just barely passed the class. I would be grateful if you could tell me the meaning of your screen name, but, to be a team player, and amuse you, I would like to guess first.

I think "Ta bu shi da yu" means something like "It is not fighting language" or possibly, "It is not fish language."

I just tracked down a native-chinese speaker in my reserach group (it's a computer engineering group, so tracking down native Chinese speakers is a helleva lot easier than tracking down native english speakers). There's some minor ambiguity due to the missing tone marks. From what TBSDY has said it's supposed to be "Tā bú shì dà yú" ("he/she/it is not a big fish"), but if it was "Tā bú shì dǎ yú" it could be taken to mean "he/she/it isn't someone who fishes / likes to fish", though that's not particularly grammatical or meaningful. --MarkSweep 17:32, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, of course, the tone marks: I remember them. There are four: "Rising," "Falling," "Constantly emphasized," and "Falling and then rising again." (That's just my way of describing them, as I remember from my class.) I have misplaced my Chinese-to-American dictionaries, which I saved from my college days, but even without the tome marks, I could probably look at the various possibilities and make a good guess. Of course, if I were a native speaker, and/or had not misplaced my dictionaries, and/or had the missing tone marks, I would no doubt do better. (By the way, it was HARD to find any online dictionaries, but I found a little bit of info.)

Just a second: Let me look at your links above in another window -I'll be right back: OK, I'm back. Yes, I do recall your photo, and you did look Caucasian (White), but I wasn't sure. Blocked Vandal

You said on 203.166.99.252's talk page that you were issuing a permanent block. That was on August 2nd. There were more vandalisms on August 3rd and 4th. I see...that is a problem! But these seem like static IPs; doesn't User:MinorEdit get the same IP assigned each time? If so, at least we can eliminate most of the problem that way. The long term solution is to have a developer change the IP blocking code so that IP blocks can, when desired, block only anonymous users from those IPs, without affecting registered users. Combine that with a three-day waiting period for new accounts from these IPs (which has already been proposed for all new accounts!), and we have a real solution.

This comment seems rather more like a personal attack, rather than a response to the question, or something worthy of the trust invested in you by your appointment to the Arbcom.

We'll see just how good their service is at responding to this sort of thing - we should be supporting any company that assists us. Therefore, I'm hoping that the Wikipedia spirit of cooperation and immense amount of volunteers will help with tracking down vandal edits.

If Ozemail gives a good response, we can use them as an example of a good ISP, and maybe even shame AOL into assisting us (we get lots of vandalism from them).

Hey, I've been implementing the infobox class on a few old templates, but have been getting a bit of grief from their guardians. Some come round after a bit of explanation but User:RedWolf is getting very upset, threats of mediation etc. If you could lend some support and help diffuse the situation that would be most appreciated. This is a thread. If you want to stay synchronised, don't substitute it. Some of us are considering forming a wikiproject (or something) to coordinate on scripts for the Monobook skin. I'm sorry to say I reverted your changes to some of the Mountain infoboxes - if part of them use WikiTax and part of them use HTML, the infobox breaks. No offence is meant, but - we shouldn't break it - it took me quite a while to figure out what went wrong, and I have no interest in the infoboxes... I don't have anyone in mind, just as long as it isn't me (since I closed the first one). I wasn't involved with the article at all, I just happened to be the admin that closed the discussions for the 30th. A user questioned the decision to delete, considering that the article had been revised, and when I looked at the history, I saw that all the votes to delete had been cast before the rewrite, so I felt a new listing was in order. RFC style issues

Looks like a good idea, and it would be better separate from the entire mess of 'wikipedia proposal' thingies. We've recently been looking into standardization processes for templates and categories; style would certainly be one of them. The idea is to set up a system to create a standard and stick with it (e.g. WP:TS). Your comments would be welcome - Wikipedia:Standards for now (and note that that page will be subject to heavy rewriting, it's just a draft yet). It was a piece when I found it, and looked worse than a lot of other preacher promotion we get here. That said, I didn't try to put a lot of work into researching the subject's background, and that might have been in error. I did not, however, renominate. The voting's still not swinging one way or another (though if I were closing it right now, I'd say the consensus was keep), so it's likely a good thing the community's looking at this. The first two votes on the original VfD are telling:

This user is bullying me and removes attribution and copyright notices that should appear in articles. I have added one last time the attribution to Sphaera Mundi, as GFDL and Wikipedia's Cite Sources Policy requires it. If this user (or anyone else) removes the attribution, I'm not going to revert again, and I will ask for its deletion instead. Having GFDL-licensed Wikinerds' articles in Wikipedia is fine as long as an attribution notice is visible, as required by GFDL. But when this notice is removed, I consider the article to be a copyvio. I have asked for mediation to end UninvitedCompany's bullying. If he continues his bullying, I think you could help by deleting any article which is copied from Wikinerds and does not contain proper attribution. Right now there are two articles to watch: Sphaera Mundi and Vodafone (see this edit). If you are a mediator, you could also help with the mediation. Sockpuppet discovery

Eequor is the sockpuppeteer of banned user Rienzo (and several other sockpuppets)

  • Even though Eequor claims to be strongly anti-Christian, this is in fact a lie. Eequor has repeatedly attacked, within the rules, several editors who make negative comments against Christianity, to the extent that her status as an evangelical christian, and her editing behaviour associated with it, was a heavy part of her RFA
  • Piglet and Lady Tara both claimed to be female, as does Eequor
  • Shortly after crossing Eequor's path negatively, editors find their pages vandalised by one of a number of sockpuppets, as well as false accusations against them by
editors they have never previously met (e.g. [[User:Rienzo

|Rienzo]]'s accusation against CheeseDreams after Eequor raised an extensive RFC against CheeseDreams on a topic Eequor supposedly didn't give a damn about and claims to be on CheeseDream's (anti-Christian) side over)
