Pandian Stores

Pandya Store is an Indian television drama series that premiered on 25 January 2021 on StarPlus.[1] The series is a remake of Star Vijay's Tamil series Pandian Stores.[2] Produced by Sphere Origins, it stars Shiny Doshi, Kinshuk Mahajan, Kanwar Dhillon, Alice Kaushik, Akshay Kharodia, Simran Budharup, Kruttika Desai Khan and Mohit Parmar.[3]

Plot

The story starts by introducing Gautam, Dhara and Anita. While Anita is eager to take over the Pandya Store by marrying Gautam, Dhara is a kind-hearted girl. Soon, Anita and Gautam's marriage is planned. Not knowing that the Pandya Store is under the mortgage, Anita goes ahead with the marriage. On the wedding day, when Anita finds out, she breaks the marriage, and Gautam decides to marry Dhara. Gautam’s younger brothers, Dev, Krish and Shiva, welcome Dhara to the Pandya House while Suman objects. Although unwillingly, she later accepts Dhara as her daughter-in-law. Suman, who was paralysed, started recuperating while Dhara and Gautam together reclaim the Pandya Store. Dhara comes up with novel ideas to bring Pandya Store out of the financial crisis. Slowly, Dhara and Gautam fall in love. Dhara decides not to start her own family until she ultimately settles with her brothers-in-law.

Ten years later

Dev, Krish and Shiva have grown up to be mature adults. Dhara and Gautam reopen the Pandya Store after ten years, and hence, a huge function is hosted. Raavi, Prafulla's niece, confesses that she loves Dev. While Raavi gets along with everyone in the Pandya house, she and Shiva remain at loggerheads. Jagat pleads with Suman for the alliance, and then the marriage is fixed between them. But Dev is already in a relationship with Rishita, a rich man Janardhan Seth 's daughter. Rishita's parents do not accept her love; instead, they force her to accept another alliance. Dev tries to make his family realise that he loves Rishita. Dev reveals to Dhara that he can't betray Rishita by marrying Raavi or Raavi by marrying her without love, as this is not what Dhara has taught him. Dhara agrees to go and talk to Rishita's family about the alliance but is slapped and humiliated by Rishita's family. Dev and Shiva reach Janardhan's house and have a physical altercation with the family for insulting Dhara. He breaks all ties with Rishita and agrees to continue his marriage with Raavi. Dev realises that he cannot forget Rishita but stays quiet. Rishita runs from her house on the wedding day and comes to the wedding venue, shocking everyone. She spills the beans on her and Dev's relation, and Dev supports her, leaving Raavi heartbroken. Raavi attempts suicide by hanging on a fan, but Shiva saves her. Raavi blames Dhara as she has always loved and admired Dhara like her superhero. Suman's condition worsens, and they all rush to her. She, too, blames Dhara. Dhara asks Shiva to marry Raavi. Shiva agrees for Dhara's sake. Dev and Rishita and Shiva and Raavi get married. Rishita leaves no stone unturned by insulting Raavi during their after wedding rituals. Later, when Rishita stops Dhara from doing the welcome pooja and asking her to let Suman do it, but Suman stands up for Dhara. Shiva too warns Rishita against disrespecting Dhara, even puts her down when she tries to scorn Raavi. Rishita later creates a scene when Raavi is given Dhara's room, which is bigger than the one given to her. Raavi gives her the room and asks her to stop insulting her, and she tells her she doesn't want Dev or the room. Shiva and Raavi remain at loggerheads, while Rishita continues to create conflict at the Pandya house.

The next day the three couples go for a pooja, but on the way, Shiva and Raavi are kidnapped by the goons sent by Rishita's father. Krish learns of their kidnapping and informs everyone. Dev and Gautam suspect Janardhan (Rishita's father) for this misdeed and go to his house to blackmail him. Shiva and Raavi also accidentally learn about Janardhan. Meanwhile, Dhara, Rishita and Krish return to their house and are taunted by Maami, who went to the Pandya house to see Raavi. Things seem complicated with Shiva and Raavi, but because of the timely arrival of the Pandya brothers, Shiva and Raavi are saved. Later, Suman sends her sons and daughters-in-law for the Kuldevi Ritual to their family friend's haveli.

At the haveli, several hurdles occur. Rishita's arrogant behaviour continues, and she disrespects the family. Shiva and Raavi continuously have arguments throughout the journey, and their fights worsen day-by-day at the haveli. Over time, she saw Rishita's disrespect for Dhara, Shiva and Krish hatch a plan to teach her a lesson. Krish is decked up as a witch with makeup, long hair and a sari. He invites Rishita to the courtyard and scares her to the extent that she loses her voice and consciousness. To Krish's lousy luck, Dhara arrives and is startled to see Rishita unconscious. Soon, Krish's truth comes out and furious, Dhara beats him with a stick. Shiva later reveals that he too was part of the plan, and Dhara furiously beats them with a stick in tears, blaming herself for raising them so severely. She then decides to part the family and tells everyone that the kitchen and the haveli will be divided from the next day and that the couples will have to live together, and Krish will reside with Dhara. Shiva and Krish try their best to win Dhara's heart again but in vain. Later, Suman arrives at the haveli with Prafulla and Anita. They notice strange behaviour, and Suman warns Dhara not to do anything behind her back. Gautam later suggests that Dhara should reveal the truth to Suman, or else she can even misunderstand Dhara and throw her out of the house. Dhara tries to tell Suman, but in vain. One day, Rishita has a tiff with Dev after he sides with Dhara and is furious. She tells Suman everything. Suman confronts Dhara in a temple and decides to throw her out.

Meanwhile, Krish, Dev, Shiva and Raavi are trapped under the stones of a broken temple. However, Rishita arrives in time, saves them, and rushes to the temple to stop Dhara from leaving. When they reach, it's too late, and Dhara bids goodbye to the family. The children beg Suman to stop Dhara, and Suman then realises that whatever Dhara does to them, they all consider her a mother and separating a mother from her children is terrible. She stops Dhara from leaving, and Rishita too realises her mistakes and makes up with the family, apologising to Dhara. Seeing the family's unity, Anita reveals her right side to Prafulla on how she has come to the haveli only to get Dhara out of Gautam's life. She decides to execute her heinous plan, and her first step is to gain Dhara's respect. Eventually, Dhara falls into Anita's trap and considers her a friend, even after all that Anita has done to the family. Seeing Gautam and Dhara's late-night romance, Anita fumes, and she decides to make Dhara get injured and later care for her so that Suman begins considering her an excellent person to make her way into the Pandya Family. Anita spills oil, but Raavi falls onto Dhara, and cunningly, Anita puts the entire blame on Prafulla. Later, Raavi gets to know about Anita's plan and scolds her for her actions. As Suman got to know that Prafulla made a video of her and Dhara at the temple, she confronts her and shifts her to a room outside the haveli.

Angry Prafulla challenges Shiva to take Suman's bangles back from her. During the pagphera rasam of Raavi, Shiva mortgaged his part of his land and took a loan without letting anyone know it. Rishita follows Shiva on doubting Shiva to start his own transport business with loan money but proved wrong as Shiva hides the money. While Raavi returned from Prafulla's home to haveli, Shiva puts a shocking condition in front of Prafulla to return Suman's bangles or keep Raavi with her. Hurt Raavi herself refuses to go with Shiva and Prafulla refuse to give bangles back. On the other hand, the Pandya family organised Raavi's birthday surprise party. Everyone enjoyed and celebrated her birthday; while Praffula provokes Shiva, he became angry and took her to the terrace. He threatens her to either return bangles, or he will throw her down. The family tries to stop Shiva and take Prafulla back. Shiva leaves her and says that I will commit suicide if she does not return bangles. He jumps down, but the Pandya brothers hold his hand. Frustrated, Raavi says to Prafulla to end her life with Shiva if bangles are more critical. Raavi was about to jump while Prafulla shouts, saying she will return the bangles. While Shiva got emotional, Raavi burst out with anger and walk away. Later, Shiva gifts Prafulla new bangles, and Raavi feels guilty. Shiva says that he mortgaged his land to buy new bangles for Prafulla. He will return the loan by selling his trucks. Shiva made a deal to sell a truck, but Janaradhan framed him in black-marketing of cumin. They are all set to leave for Somnath, while Rishita gets to know about Janardhan's plan but defends him, saying he is innocent. Angry Rishita fumes with anger and leaves for Janardhan's home to prove him innocent. Gautam trapped the man Suraj who framed Shiva on Janardhan's order but later escaped. They all reached Somnath(their home) safely. While police keep searching for Shiva, officers put notice to seal the Pandya store. Rishita saves Pandya store and shiva. Now, Shiva has started feeling for Raavi. On the other hand, the Pandya family organises the reception of Rishita and Raavi. Shiva keeps staring at Raavi and decides to talk to her after the reception. Gautam and Dhara invited Kamini and Kalyani (Rishita mom and aunt) for the reception. They insult Pandyas by giving expensive gifts. Angry Dev returns the gifts to Kamini and Kalyani, leaving Rishita heartbroken. While Rishita apologises to Kamini and Kalyani, Kamini pushed and insulted her too. The next day, Dev and Shiva finalise the design of Gautam and Dhara's room. Dhara asks Raavi to go and handle the Pandya store for today. On the way, Raavi meets her friend Sneha who insults Shiva. While Shiva feels insulted, Raavi fumes with anger and scold Sneha for insulting him. Upset Shiva returned drunk late at night at home and got scolded by Dhara. He, however, got saved by Gautam and goes to his room. He saw Raavi sleeping and talks to her. Later, he read Raavi's diary and feels shocked seeing Raavi love Dev written in it. He misunderstands that Raavi still loves Dev. Later, Raavi confronts him, and Shiva says that he asked her if she is not satisfied with this marriage, she can leave and go back. Shiva was drunk so, he reluctantly falls asleep. Raavi burns her diary, saying that if she has no relation with her past so what's the use of keeping this diary. The next day, Gautam asked Shiva why he came drunk, and Shiva replied that he didn't deserve Raavi and ruined her life by marrying her. Gautam asks him to shut up and say nothing like this. On the other hand, Anita gifts a curd-seller a saree and curd-seller badmouths Dhara for not giving gifts. She says that Anita should have married Gautam and rush to Pandya's house to talk to Suman about their marriage. She taunts Dhara for not having a child while Dhara feels dejected. Later, Gautam consoles her. Dhara saw Raavi angrily mopping the floor and asked if she was angry with Shiva. While Raavi argues with Dhara, Rishita listens to their talks. She also asks Raavi to chill and forget her past. At night, Raavi apologises on behalf of Sneha from Shiva, and they argue. Gautam brings a new bed for Raavi and Shiva, while Rishita feels upset about getting an old bed. Shiva and Dev decide used t new room for Dhara and Gautam, and angry Rishita spoil the room designs. Raavi gets happy seeing the new bed, and Dev makes new sketches of the room. The next day, Dhara take Raavi to handle the Pandya store. On the way, Janardhan insults Gautam for not having his child and says he will snatch Shiva's mortgaged land very soon. Gautam gets angry and fights with Janardhan. Gautam returns injured and deny angrily to make room due to financial crises. Dev borrows money from his friend, and three brothers started making room on the terrace. The bathroom lock was not working, and Rishita changed her clothes; suddenly, Krish enters by mistake. They scream, and Rishita demands a new bathroom.

Production

Development

In January 2020, Star Plus planned an official Hindi remake of Star Vijay's Tamil series Pandian Stores to be produced by Mahesh Pandey Productions under the title Khandaan.[4][5]

With a change in title to Hum– Ek Makaan Ek Dukaan, filming began in February 2020 with portions shot in Varanasi but, shooting was halted in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.[6]

After the lockdown, the series was shifted to Star Bharat. The channel changed its programming genre to comedy from drama due to which it was scrapped and the plot was changed completely to suit it.[7][8]

Later, filming began in July 2020 post-COVID break and the show was aired with the title Gupta Brothers - Chaar Kunware From Ganga Kinaare from 5 October 2020, as a dramedy series to suit Star Bharat's comedy genre.[9][10]

But due to low response from the audience towards Star Bharat’s comedy genre, the channel underwent a revamp once again and the show's genre was again changed to drama, with its plot being loyal to the plot of the original Pandian Stores and the show being rebaptized as Gupta Brothers.[11]

In December 2020, Star Plus announced another Hindi television remake of Pandian Stores titled Pandya Store produced by Sphere Origins which premiered on 25 January 2021. Pandya Store's plot is more loyal to Pandian Stores.[12][13]

With the launch of the second official Hindi television remake of Pandian Stores; the first official Hindi television remake Gupta Brothers was announced to go off-air on 5 February.[14][15] But, later, Gupta Brothers went off-air abruptly on 26 January, earlier than the announced date.[16]

In UK/Europe, Star Plus rebranded to Utsav Plus and The Show Airs On Utsav Plus.

Deven Bhojani was hired as the creative consultant for the series in January 2021.[17]

On 5 March 2021, it took a generation leap of ten years.

Casting

Kinshuk Mahajan was cast as Gautam Pandya, on preparing for which he said, "To fit into the skin of my character I had to lose about 5kgs and had a grueling diet. Also since this show is based in Somnath, Gujarat, I had to work on my dialect, luckily Shiny, my co-actor was my guide." Shiny Doshi who was cast as Dhara said, "It was necessary to work towards certain nuances to meet the requirements of my character. We also attended workshops before we began shooting for the show."[18]

In March 2021, the show took a generation leap and Kanwar Dhillon and Alice Kaushik were introduced as the parallel leads with Akshay Kharodia, Mohit Parmar and Simran Budharup.[19] [20]

Filming

Set in Somnath in Gujarat, the series is mainly shot at Film City, Mumbai.[21] Besides, some initial sequences were shot at Somnath and Bikaner in Rajasthan.[22][23]

On 20 February 2021, a massive fire broke out on the sets of the series and some parts of the set, some costumes and some shoot material were burnt.[24][25]

On 13 April 2021, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray announced a sudden curfew due to increased Covid cases, while the production halted in Mumbai from 14 April 2021.[26] Hence, the production location of the series was soon shifted temporarily to the Gajner Palace is Bikaner.[27]

Release and broadcast

The first promo of the series was released on 26 December 2020 featuring the parallel leads Shiny Doshi and Kinshuk Mahajan.[28]

On 17 April 2021, it aired a one-hour episode at 10:00 PM, instead of 11:00 pm.

The show debuted in the late-night slot of 11.00 PM and garnered high ratings, so it continued in its slot. Another StarPlus show titled Shaadi Mubarak’s filming halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its lead actor was infected with the coronavirus.[29] On 21 April 2021, after Shaadi Mubarak’s bank episodes had finished airing, its 7:30 PM timeslot was allotted to Pandya Store, keeping 11.00 PM as the repeat slot.[30]

Reception

In Week 16, it switched to the late-evening slot of 7:30 PM and it earned 1.9 TRP, which was much more than its predecessor in that slot, making it the highest-rated show in the 7:30 PM slot.[31][failed verification]
