"Forever"
Song

"Forever" is a song by American R&B singer Chris Brown. Produced by Polow da Don, it is the first single off the repackaged Exclusive: Forever Edition, and is the fifth overall single by Brown from his second studio album Exclusive.[1]

Following the worldwide success of the previous hit single "With You", "Forever" continued the chart-topping success worldwide. The song climbed the charts quickly in Europe and Australia based on strong digital download sales, even though "With You" continues to sell strongly. "Forever" has also become Brown's biggest hit from Exclusive in the UK mainly due to its dance theme popular in the UK, it's his third-highest charting single there to date, peaking at number 4. In Ireland it is Brown's first number one of his career, as it has reached number 1 for two non-consecutive weeks.

The song has officially become Brown's 9th top ten hit in the US since it has reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.[2] "Forever" is Brown's fourth top ten hit in 2008, after "With You", "Shawty Get Loose", and "No Air". So far it has reached number 9 on United World Chart, and has gained 1,460,000 points so far and becoming his fifth highest-charting single there.[3]

Writing and recording

It's very fortunate, my label wants me to repackage the album and release some new records. I've been recording a lot of new records as well as having some songs that haven't been released yet that I can put on my repackaging.

Chris Brown, MTV News[1]

"Forever" is one out of four new songs Brown recorded for the re-release of his second studio album Exclusive.[4] "Forever" was produced by Polow da Don and is one of the cuts Brown laid down recently. He recorded the song using an autotune effect, as he did in one of his previous singles, Kiss Kiss.[5]

Originally, the plan was to follow up his current single, "With You," with the Kanye West-featuring "Down," but the new material won out.[6] The song was penned by Brown and his songwriting team, the Graffiti Artists (besides Chris, Rob Allen and Andre Merritt comprise the crew). "We went into the studio, Polow gave me a beat, and I just started writing. His record is more of a European, techno, house-type feel," Brown recalled. "We wanted to give it that other side of crossover, and go a little bit to that pop realm. Hopefully, [I'll] be the Prince of Pop. I don't want to say I'm the King; I just hopefully can be the Prince of Pop." Chris shows respect for Michael Jackson who is the King of Pop. Similarly, Chris pays tribute to MJ by dressing like him; Chris wears MJ styled jackets or sweaters with the letter M on them.

Critical reception

Bill Lamb of About.com gave the song four and a half stars, and said it as one of Brown's best (single) to date and look for this song near the top of the pop singles chart very soon. He said, "The underlying structure of "Forever" is clearly out of club land. The synths continually threaten to break into a full techno sunrise effect". He also compared this song with Rihanna's hit single, "Don't Stop The Music", "Unlike Rihanna's decidedly retro "Don't Stop the Music," "Forever" brings the gorgeous essence of contemporary trance and techno to mainstream pop fans. This is arguably Polow da Don's most effective production to date". He also said, "Perhaps this is the single Polow da Don was hoping to put together when he worked the knobs for Usher's return on "Love in This Club". Where Usher's voice got lost in an incessantly dull groove, Chris Brown's now familiar vocals simply glide and wind around bubbling and gurgling synths anchored by bass lines that sound like they're rolling around at the bottom of a placid sea. Countless listeners will swoon."[7]

Music video

The two-days shoot took place in Los Angeles, California, April 4, 2008. It was directed by the acclaimed Joseph Kahn. The video premiered on TRL on April 30, 2008 and on BET's 106 & Park on May 5, 2008. The video reached number one on the MTV Online Chart.[8]

The music video starts off with Brown driving into the club, and people are seen dancing while Brown starts to sing the first verse. Brown is also seen singing with light effects circling him. During the choruses, Brown and his background dancers start to dance on the empty dance floor. In the second verse, Brown is walking outside the club following his love interest. During the bridge, Brown is seen in the top roof with his love interest; the girl falls off the roof and Brown jumps to catch her. The two land safely, and after the final chorus, Brown drives out of the club.

Most fans and critics said that the video has a lot of similarity with Usher's "Love in This Club" video. The dancing and the music video has much similarity with Michael Jackson's dance moves especially in his music video Rock With You and Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough. According to the Billboard, the song's video is a digital dream about sharing with one who makes your world stop: "I waited my whole life for this one night, it's gon' be me you and the dancefloor / dance forever." [9]

The video was quite popular in American television, by reaching number 2 on MTV TRL, and has stayed in the countdown for 23 days so far. The video was popular enough across Asia, by debuting at number 13 on MTV Asia program, "Chart Attack", which count 20 most popular video in Asia and so far has peaked at number 6. "Forever" also debuted at number 7 on MTV Hip Hop Countdown; MTV Asian program which count 10 most popular urban video in the region. So far, it has reached number 1 for three weeks, and has stayed in the countdown for six weeks so far.[10] In UK, it has reached number 5 on MTV Base. It also has peaked at number 1 on the MTV Online Chart.[11]

The video finally debuted on BET's 106 & Park at #10 on July 21st, 2008.
