The albums discography of American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey consists of twelve studio albums, six compilation albums, one compilation EP and one live album. In 1990 Carey began recording music for her debut album, Mariah Carey which was released in June 1990. Carey's first single Vision of Love, became her first U.S. number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a large success worldwide. Later, the subsequent three singles released from Mariah's debut, also reached the top of the U.S. chart, while performing moderately throughout the rest of the world. Mariah Carey was certified 9x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting shipments of over nine million copies in the United States and over 15 million worldwide. By 1993, Carey was a global star and released her third and most successful worldwide studio album Music Box, which produced her 8th #1 single Hero and the worldwide smash, a cover of Harry Nilson's Without You. "Without You" became Carey's first number one song in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia elevating sales to around 32 million copies worldwide. The album is certified Diamond in the United States for shipments in excess of 10 million and is Carey's second highest-selling album there.[1]

Carey released a Christmas album in 1994, Merry Christmas, she has said on many occasions that she didn't think she should release a Christmas album so early in her career but decided to do it after encouragement from her record label at the time Columbia Records it went on to become one of the biggest Holiday albums of all time and produced the worldwide classic All I Want for Christmas Is You, which subsequently became the only recent holiday song to be considered a classic. "All I Want for Christmas Is You". In 1995 Carey released her fifth studio album, Daydream, which became her most successful album in the United States, selling 7,556,000 copies and being certified Diamond by the RIAA, and has sold over 25 million copies worldwide.[2]. It also produced two Multi-Platinum singles "Fantasy" and "One Sweet Day".[3][4] Carey released her sixth studio album Butterfly, which introduced a raunchy new image from lead single "Honey", from then Carey's popularity was in decline. However, "Butterfly" received 5x Platinum status in the U.S. Later in 1998, Carey released her first compilation album Number 1's which was certified 5x platinum by the RIAA, and sold over 17 million copies worldwide. The success of "Number 1's" was credited with influencing the releases of many other later "Greatest Hits" albums. Rainbow was released in 1999 and served as Carey's seventh studio album. "Rainbow" was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA, and has sold over 9 million copies worldwide.

In 2000, Carey received an award for best selling female artist of the Millennium at the World Music Awards.[5] In 2001 Carey parted from Columbia and signed a contract with EMI's Virgin Records worth a reported US$80 million[6] and released her next studio album Glitter, which was the soundtrack album to the film of the same name. It was a commercial failure both in the U.S. and worldwide receiving only Platinum status with shipments of 1,000,000 copies (636,000 sales) and is her second lowest selling album to date. Following this and a highly publicized breakdown she was paid by Virgin Records to leave the label.

Mariah Carey signed a new deal in 2002 with Island Records and released her ninth studio album Charmbracelet which was more successful than "Glitter" selling 1.3 million copies in the U.S. and around 5 million worldwide. Carey took a 3 year break after this album to record new material and introduce a hip-hop influence she released her tenth studio album The Emancipation of Mimi, which became a huge success in the United States and worldwide, being certified 6x platinum by the and selling over 10 million copies worldwide. "The Emancipation of Mimi" produced the biggest song of the decade We Belong Together, which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for fourteen weeks, and became a large success across the globe. The album was also her first album in the United Kingdom to receive a Platinum certification since 1995's "Daydream" and went of to receive 2x Platinum awards by 2007. In 2008, Carey released her eleventh studio album E=MC2 (Mariah Carey album), which was certified platinum by the RIAA, and has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide. It produced the #1 single "Touch My Body" which broke her tie with Elvis Presley for the most #1s in America. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel her 12th studio album was released in 2009. It was certified Gold (500,000+) by the RIAA, and has sold over 1 million copies worldwide and remains her lowest selling album in the U.S. and worldwide to date.

According to her official record company, Mariah Carey has sold more than 175 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.[7][8][9] According to Nielsen SoundScan, Carey has sold 51,569,000 albums in the United States through the end of 2008, making her the third best selling artist of the SoundScan era.[10] The RIAA named her the third best-selling female recording artist in the U.S., with shipment of 62.5 million albums.[11]
