The Palm Pixi is a multimedia smartphone developed by Palm. The device is viewed as a successor to the Palm Centro smartphone and is Palm's second webOS device, after the Palm Pre. The device was officially announced on September 8, 2009, and was released on November 15, 2009.

Announcement

The Pixi's existence had been speculated during much of 2009, as a lower-cost complement to the Pre; the phone was referred to as the "Pixie" and "Eos". On September 8, 2009, Palm announced the Pixi via its blog.

Pixi Plus

At CES 2010 the Pixi Plus was announced. The differences are the inclusion of WiFi, the ability to act, like the Palm Pre Plus, as a 3G Mobile Hotspot (sometimes known as MiFi), and new backcovers, all of which are TouchStone compatible. The phone is currently carried by Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility.

Specifications

Palm, Inc. detailed the specifications of the Palm Pixi on the company's product web page. According to the information given, the Pixi features a 2.63-inch capacitive touchscreen with an 18-bit color 320x400 screen resolution Sub-HVGA display. The device weighs 99.5 grams (3.51 ounces) and is 55.0mm (2.17 inches) in width, 111.0mm (4.37 inches) in height and 10.85mm (0.43 inches) thick. On board radios include GPS, Dual-band CDMA2000 and 3g EVDO Rev A data networking. E-mail supports Microsoft Exchange services and direct push, as well as POP3, IMAP, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL and Hotmail. Messaging features include IM, SMS and MMS. It features a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash, proximity sensor, accelerometer, Bluetooth 2.1 (with A2DP stereo), MicroUSB connector, 3.5 mm headphone jack and 8 gigabytes of flash memory (roughly 7 gigabytes available to the user). Like the Palm Pre, the Pixi features Palm Synergy synchronization features, Universal search, Palm Services over-the-air backup, restore, remote erase and updates; and compatibility with the Palm Touchstone charging dock. The Pixi plus includes built-in WiFi support in its updated version, known as the Pixi Plus, which is available only at Verizon and AT&T Wireless.

The Pixi was released on November 15, 2009 exclusively on the Sprint carrier network in the U.S . It was released January 7, 2010 for the Verizon Wireless carrier network, and on the May 28, 2010 for o2 in the United Kingdom.

Palm webOS is Palm's mobile operating system running on Linux kernel.

The Palm Pre smartphone was the first device to launch with webOS, and both were introduced to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 8, 2009 (2009-01-08). The Palm Pre and webOS were released on June 6, 2009 (2009-06-06). The second device to use the operating system, the Palm Pixi, was released on November 15, 2009. The webOS features significant online social network and Web 2.0 integration.
