Germany will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 and will select their entry in a series of competitive heats and a national final Unser Star für Baku, which will be organised jointly by the public broadcasters ARD and NDR and the private television channel ProSieben.[1]
Unser Star für Baku
One week after the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf, ARD confirmed their participation in the Eurovision 2012 in Baku.[2]
On 15 June, ARD officially presented the national selection.[3] The method is the same as in 2010.
Resignation of Stefan Raab
On 23 May, three time Eurovision producer and host of Eurovision 2011, Stefan Raab, officially announced his resignation from his roles in the German Eurovision selection: Host, producer, mentor and jury president, but his support for the German Eurovision artist will still remain.[4] He will be replaced by Thomas Dürr, better known as Thomas D, singer of the German hip hop band Die Fantastischen Vier.
Changes
On 25 November 2011, ARD announced several changes in the national selection. Sandra Rieß and Steven Gätjen will replace Matthias Opdenhövel and Sabine Heinrich as the hosts. The final of "Unser Star für Baku" will take place on 16 February 2012.
Furthermore, instead of having guest judges on each show, Thomas D. will be accompanied by two further constant judges, Alina Süggeler, lead singer of the band Frida Gold, and Stefan Raab despite his resignation from further involvement in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Furthermore, a unique voting system was introduced. The public can already vote for the candidates while they are presented - intermediate results will be presented on screen to the viewer and in the studio to candidates, judges an hosts during the show. The singer, who has the fewest votes then, will perform first and has therefore the longest time to convince with their talent.[5]
