Revision as of 15:03, 17 February 2012

Elections of Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales are scheduled to take place on 15 November 2012[1][2], having been put back from the originally planned date of May 2012[3] in order to secure the passage of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 through the House of Lords.[4]

Police and Crime Commissioner elections will be for the 41 police forces of England and Wales, outside of Greater London[5] and will take place using the supplementary vote system.

Candidates

The Liberal Democrats Federal Executive Committee voted against providing funds for regional parties who wished to stand candidates[6]. The opposition Labour Party considered not standing in favour of independent candidates, claiming that running candidates would politicise police forces.[7]

Local resident Ian Burgess has confirmed he will be standing as an independant candidate for Essex.[8]. Jordan Newell, Chairman of the Labour Party's Colchester branch, has confirmed his intention to seek the Party's nomination[9].

Current Member of Parliament for Manchester Central, Labour's Tony Lloyd, has indicated his intention to stand for his party's nomination[10]

Confirmed candidates are potential Labour Party nominee Hamish Sanderson and independent candidate Christopher Edwin Wright[11]

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott confirmed in February 2012 he would apply for the Labour nomination[12]. Other nominees for the Labour Party candidature include retired Humberside officer Keith Hunter and former Kingston-upon-Hull council leader Colin Inglis[13].

Colonel Tim Collins gave an indication that he would consider standing as a Conservative candidate in the Kent Police election[14].

Lancashire County Council member Sam Chapman, the Conservative member for the Chorley South division[15] told the Lancashire Telegraph he was "seriously considering" seeking the nomination[16]. Ribble Valley borough councillor Kevin Horkin[17] came forward as a candidate in January, promising to "give people across the County a voice"[18][19].

Jane Kennedy, former Labour MP for Liverpool Broadgreen and its successor Wavertree, and Peter Kilfoyle, the former Labour MP for Walton will enter the shortlisting process for their Party's nomination[20]

Provisional candidates include Tal Michael for the Labour Party and independent Richard Hibbs[21].

The Labour Party nomination is being sought by current Labour MP Alun Michael, who represents Cardiff South and Penarth [22] and Cardiff city councillor Paul Cannon. The Falklands War veteran and campaigner Simon Weston has confirmed his intention to stand as an independent candidate[23].

The former national secretary of the Police Superintendents Association of England and Wales, Des Parkinson, is to seek the Conservative Party nomination[24].
