Jab Tak Hai Jaan is an upcoming 2012 Bollywood romantic drama film directed by Yash Chopra, written and produced by Aditya Chopra under their production house Yash Raj Films. The film features Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in pivotal roles, making it the first film to pair Khan and Kaif and the second collaboration between Khan and Sharma.[2] The film, believed to be a love triangle, marks the return of Yash Chopra as a director after a gap of eight years, his last film being Veer-Zaara in 2004.[3] The soundtrack will be composed by A. R. Rahman, who will be working with Yash Chopra for the first time in his career. He had earlier worked with Yash Chopra's production house Yash Raj Films on Saathiya (directed by Shaad Ali). The film is scheduled for release on 13 November 2012. A short teaser of the film was released alongside Ek Tha Tiger, yet another film by Yash Raj Film production.[4]

There is an elaborate action sequence involving his character was shot in Laddakh recently. It was reported that Shah Rukh Khan would play a role spanning across two life stages; first, in his 20s of a role resembling that of his earlier performance 'Raj' from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, while the second of a more matured age, an army officer in Laddakh.[5]
Prior to the film's release, Kaif's role was described as "the archetypal Yash Chopra seductress; an unattainable beauty".[6] She was reported to have put in a great deal of effort to make her character believable,[7] and was helped by Khan, who had prior experience with the director. Kaif faced difficulty at times while filming in London due to the cold weather.[8] In an interview, she said that she hoped the film would do for her what Chandni did for Sridevi.[6]
Anushka plays a young, bubbly girl who works for a wildlife channel in London. She is ambitious, career-driven and a complete charmer. She speaks a lot but Samar remains sombre due to events happened in his past but Muskaan starts falling in love with Samar.Anushka Sharma was reported to have been portraying the second female lead in the film. However, in April 2012, it was reported that she would be playing only an extended cameo appearance in the film.[9] This was later denied by their official spokesperson.[10]

Production

Development

In June 2011, Yash Raj Films released an official statement announcing the commencement of a new Yash Chopra directorial venture, which would coincide with the 50th anniversary of Chopra's career in Bollywood. The producers also announced that film would release on the Diwali weekend of 2012.[13] According to Chopra, the film was planned in early 2009, but he did not want Khan to work on any film other than his. In an interview with The Telegraph, he said, "My film is an emotional film. It is not comedy, action, escapism ... This is what we call an internal film. There are only three characters [and] their emotions, happiness, sadness."[14] In the same interview, he stated that the film was untitled as of that time, similar to his previous film Veer-Zaara which was named on the day of its submission to the Central Board of Film Certification.[15]

For the film's name, the producers considered a variety of options but were reportedly not satisfied. Subsequently, over the beginning of 2012, various sources claimed that the film would be titled as London Ishq, but an official announcement from Yash Raj Films denied the title.[16] Yash Chopra had later "nearly finalized" the title Jai, but retracted it afterwards. In June 2012, it was reported that Yash Raj Films had strongly considered naming the film as Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum, inspired by a popular song from Yash Chopra's 1981 film Silsila, though the news remained officially unconfirmed.[17]

Filming

Initially, the film's principal photography was expected to commence in November 2011. However, it had to be delayed since Khan had wanted to take a break with his family after his two 2011 releases Ra.One and Don 2.[18] Principal photography officially commenced on 9 January 2012[3] at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai, where a significant portion of the film was completed.[19]

After the schedule in India, the crew began a 35-day filming schedule in London beginning on February 22, 2012. The film was shot under a working title of Production 45.[20][21] Khan arrived in London on March 21, 2012[22] and completed filming his appearance on March 26.[11] During filming photos of the actors on the sets were leaked on the Internet, prompting a camera ban by the producers and an increase in the amount of security for the film's production.[23] A number of locations throughout the city featured in the film, including Borough Market, Jubilee Walk, the Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf. A key action sequence was filmed at Shepherd's Bush by closing down four streets in the area.[22] The schedule was completed on March 27, 2012 at an indoor location in East London.[24] It was later reported that the romantic scenes of the film were directed by Chopra's son Aditya Chopra and not Yash, due to the difference in age between the latter and the lead actors.[25] Later, it was reported that the climax of the film, initially planned by Chopra to be shot in his favourite snow-clad mountains of Kashmir, was now relocated to the beautiful city of Ladakh in the state of Jammu-Kashmir. This was apparently a suggestion of Khan, whose movie Dil Se.. was shot in Ladakh as well. According to the fresh report they completed shooting in three cities in Kashmir ~ Srinagar, Pahalgam & Gulmarg on 6th september 2012.[26]

Title of the film & Trailer

As per reports and usual promotional norms of Yash Raj Films, a unique form of trailer was released via both, film release of Ek Tha Tiger as well as through the firm's official Youtube channel on August 15, 2012. [28]The one and half minute trailer showed the glimpse of Yash Chopra's successful yet acclaimed several earlier romantic directorials and then in series highlighted his upcoming film by introducing the lead roles and mentioning music composer with the lyricist of the film. Yet again, the film remained untitled as ' A Yash Chopra romance ' The trailer has crossed over one million views in less than three days. [29][30]
Sources close to the production house state that the name of the film is ‘Yara Sili Sili’ which also happens to be a song in the film. [31] As per reports 27 August 2012, the title of the film and second trailer is scheduled to be revealed on 27 September 2012 that marks the director's 80th birthday as well as completion of 50 years in Bollywood film industry by the end of 2012.[32] It was confirmed on Tuesday 11th of September 2012 that the title of the movie is "Jab Tak Hai Jaan".

Soundtrack

The soundtrack for the film will be composed by A. R. Rahman, while lyrics are penned by Gulzar.[3]The first song of the film was completed in December 2011.[33] In February 2012, Rahman told in an interview with The Times of India that he had completed three songs for the film.[34] The rumors of Katrina Kaif lending her voice to a dreamy romantic song were denied by the music composer.[35][36]
