Black Dog is a brand of Scotch whisky, manufactured by United Spirits Ltd (USL), a subsidiary of the United Breweries Group. Black Dog is distilled, matured and blended in the lowland regions of Scotland.[2] The whiskies used in the blend come from all regions of Scotland - Speyside, Islay, Highlands and Lowlands.[3][4] It is matured in fine Oloroso sherry casks that lend their flavour to the whisky.[2] Black Dog sold in India is locally bottled,[5] by importing the undiluted spirits from Scotland.[6] The brand's main competitors in the Indian market are Something Special and Teacher's Highland Cream.[7][8]

History

Sir Walter S. Millard

Black Dog was launched in 1883, with the name Millard Black Dog,[1] by James McKinley from the second generation of the Leith Scotch whisky blending family. The whisky was named by Walter Millard, a Scot from the East India Company, who brought the whisky to India.[9] He was fond of angling, and chose to name it after his favourite salmon fishing fly, The Black Dog, which he used to fish in the Spey and Tay rivers in Scotland.[2]

In April 2004, it was reported in the media that USL (then named McDowell & Co) was planning to sell Black Dog in Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.[10] Black Dog had been sold in Pakistan during the British Raj, prior to the Partition of India.[11] In October the same year, it was reported that McDowell & Co was in talks with a bottling company in Pakistan to manufacture Black Dog. According to Vijay Rekhi, then managing director of McDowell & Co, and then President of the UB Group's spirits division, "It will only be a small set-up as just 3 per cent of the Pakistani population is permitted alcohol consumption.[a] But we are looking at the opportunity as we are trying to widen our footprints in the SAARC region." Rekhi also stated that a bottling tie-up was already in place in Sri Lanka and the company was also looking to expand to Bangladesh, Malaysia and Myanmar through similar arrangements.[12][13]

Black Dog was only available in 60ml and 750 ml bottles in India until January 2008, when the company introduced 180ml, 375ml and 2 litre bottles in select markets.[14]

In 2008, as part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Black Dog, the company held a 10-city concert by Stephen Kabakos, beginning in Delhi on May 8. The concert also included shows in Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Mysore, Bangalore, Goa and Pune.[15] The Westin Gurgaon, New Delhi threw a celebration dinner hosted by Indian whisky connoisseur Sandeep Arora, to celebrate Black Dog's 130th anniversary in 2013.[2]

In 2013, Black Dog Scotch Whisky celebrates 130 Years since it was founded. [16] Today it is matured and blended under the watchful eyes of Master Blender Richard Paterson.[17] Descended from a long line of whisky blenders, he has been instrumental in the success of some of the finest international brands including Black Dog.
