VisualEditor has been updated twice in the last two weeks. As usual, what is now running on the English Wikipedia had a test run at [[Mediawiki]] during the previous week.

As announced, the '''toolbar was redesigned''' to be simpler, shorter, and to have the ability to have drop-down groups with descriptions. What you see now is the initial configuration and is expected to change in response to feedback from the English Wikipedia and other Wikipedias. The controls to add <code><nowiki><u></nowiki></code> (underline), <code><nowiki><sub></nowiki></code> (subscript), and <code><nowiki><sup></nowiki></code> (superscript), <code><nowiki><s></nowiki></code> (strikethrough) and <code><nowiki><code></nowiki></code> (computer code/monospace font) annotations to text are available to all users in the drop-down menu. At the moment, all but the most basic tools have been moved into a single drop-down menu, including the tools for inserting media, references, reference lists, and templates. {{highlight|The current location of all of the items in the toolbar is temporary, and your opinions about the best order are needed! Please offer suggestions at [[Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback/Toolbar]].|lightyellow}}

In an eagerly anticipated upgrade to the '''reference dialog''', newly added references or reference groups no longer need the page to be saved before they can be re-used (bugs [[bugzilla:51689|51689]] and [[bugzilla:52000|52000]]). The 'Use existing reference' button is now disabled on pages which don't yet have any references ([[bugzilla:51848|bug 51848]]). The template parameter filter in the transclusion dialog now searches both parameter name and label ([[bugzilla:51670|bug 51670]]).

In response to several requests, there are some new '''keyboard shortcuts'''. You can now set the block/paragraph formatting from the keyboard: {{key press|Ctrl|0}} sets a block as a regular paragraph; {{key press|Ctrl|1}} up to {{key press|Ctrl|6}} sets it as a Heading 1 ("Page title") to Heading 6 ("Sub-heading 4"); {{key press|Ctrl|7}} sets it as pre-formatted ([[bugzilla:33512|bug 33512]]). {{key press|Ctrl|2}}, which creates level 2 section headings, may be the most useful.

Some improvements were made to '''capitalization for links''', so typing in "iPhone" will offer a link to "iPhone" as well as "IPhone" ([[bugzilla:50452|bug 50452]]).

'''Copying and pasting within the same document''' should work better as of today's update, as should copying from VisualEditor into a third-party application ([[bugzilla:53364|bug 53364]], [[bugzilla:52271|bug 52271]], [[bugzilla:52460|bug 52460]]). Work on copying and pasting between VisualEditor instances (for example, between two articles) and retaining formatting when copying from an external source into VisualEditor is progressing.

Major improvements to '''editing with input method editors''' (IMEs; mostly used for Indic and East Asian languages) are being deployed today. This is a complex change, so it may produce unexpected errors. On a related point, the names of languages listed in the "languages" (langlinks) panel in the Page settings dialog now display as RTL when appropriate ([[bugzilla:53503|bug 53503]]).

'''Looking ahead:''' The help/'beta' menu will soon expose the build number next to the "Leave feedback" link, so users can give more specific reports about issues they encounter ([[bugzilla:53050|bug 53050]]). This change will make it easier for developers to identify any cacheing issues, once it starts reporting the build number (currently, it says "Version [[false]]"). Also, inserting a link, reference or media file will put the cursor after the new content again ([[bugzilla:53560|bug 53560]]). Next week’s update will likely improve how dropdowns and other selection menus behave when they do not fit on the screen, with things scrolling so the selected item is always in view.

If you are active at '''other Wikipedias''', the next group of Wikipedias to have VisualEditor offered to all users is being finalized. About two dozen Wikipedias are on the list for Tuesday, September 24 for logged-in users only, and on Monday, September 30 for unregistered editors. You can [[:mw: VisualEditor/Portal/Localization|'''help with translating the documentation''']]. In several cases, most of the translation is already done, and it only needs to be copied over to the relevant Wikipedia. If you are interested in finding out whether a particular Wikipedia is currently on the list, you can leave a message for me at [[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|my talk page]].

For other questions or suggestions, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting problem reports at [[Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback]] and other ideas at [[Wikipedia talk:VisualEditor]]. Thank you! [[User:Whatamidoing (WMF)|Whatamidoing (WMF)]] [[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)|(talk)]] 21:59, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

About the talk page note... that is for ''my'' use. It is a project for a local elementary school, and some of the teachers there aren't too good with computers. I'm trying to make the userpage the "hub" of all my stuff for that school. I doubt any of those teachers even know how to edit it, and I'm going to disable section editing and the "Edit" tab so they don't mess something up. == Thanks for Nina Rosenwald article ==

Holy samoleons! I thought approval of [[Nina Rosenwald]] would take 3 weeks and it only took you 3 minutes! Thanks, Numbermaniac, I owe you one! Now all I have to do is fight off the deletionists, liberals, and anti-Zionists to get it through AfD (don't worry, AfD is a certainty) but I think I have some allies. Reason for not accepting article for creation

Hello colleagues,

Why do you not provide a reason for not accepting article submission? This is very confusing for authors. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Pamir_miren#Your_submission_at_Articles_for_creation:_SeekFast

Best regatds, Dimitar Stamenov — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pamir miren (talkcontribs) 07:03, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reason for declining is at the submission itself. -- t numbermaniac c 07:06, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Twilite Tone

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mullins5287#Your_submission_at_Articles_for_creation:_The_Twilite_Tone_.28October_2.29

Good day,

Hope is all well.

How you would suggest editing so the article will be approved?

I included as many sources as possible including trade magazines and in-depth interviews from reputable sources.

The Twilite Tone wrote and produced Kanye West "Mercy," one of the biggest songs of the past few years. Aside from that, his name can be found throughout Wikipedia, however no page has ever been established.

Thanks, your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Cheers, Dan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mullins5287 (talkcontribs) 13:51, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was that you haven't sourced your information. Because Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, we need proof that what you wrote is true. I don't see any links to independent articles or websites that are about this person. If you add a few references for your information, feel free to submit the article again and I will check it. -- t numbermaniac c 01:09, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your submission at AfC Pocket Trains was accepted

New Article on 'Lancet Study on Insite Debate'

Not sure why the previous content blanked however I have put the same content back into the empty article page and have saved it but with no indication from the Wikipedia server as to where it has gone. I cannot find my way back to the resubmit link which previously appeared. Appreciate your advice on how to progress this new article.Minphie (talk) 03:59, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think I see what the problem is. The page you are editing begins with the Wikipedia prefix. From that page, click the "talk" tab. The page you see there is blank. However, I'm not sure whether that article is indeed the kind of thing that can be on Wikipedia. If you're done, add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page and an editor will review it shortly. Thanks, -- t numbermaniac c 05:38, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bulldozer archaeology is a concept that has been around for many decades. I see you did some editing work on it. I removed the inaccurate claim that it was a recently coined term and the Israeli archaeology business, as it seems to have been created solely to push that. After reverting a new editor, probably the same account as the creator, reverted me. I've reverted again but we should not have an article making inaccurate claims and being used to push some sort of position or highlight a recent argument in this way. Any help you can give would be nice, but if you can't, I quite understand. Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 13:39, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The editor seems to be attempting to add info that, as one of the tags you added state, doesn't give a global perspective. The info being added by the editor seems to be only about Israel, and they are also messing up the references formatting section. Sorry I have to go, I'll say more later. -- t numbermaniac c 02:11, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Talkback

Hello, Numbermaniac. You have new messages at Dougweller's talk page.
Message added 16:15, 11 October 2013 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.[reply]

Dougweller (talk) 16:15, 11 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

undo explained

No, I'm not him. I thought from his talk page message that you had removed the {{whois}} notice I put on top of his talk page ... when actually he had moved it to where you found it.

I'm glad that was the explanation, because I've never had another editor remove one of those notices. Daniel Case (talk) 02:05, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel Case: I was confused why it said it belonged to you, because I didn't expect a user like that to be you! And why would they edit from their IP when they had an account, if it was you? So I just removed it. Hope it wasn't any trouble. :) -- t numbermaniac c 02:32, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for the confusion, numbermaniac. I moved the act of vandalism lower on my talk page and replaced Verizon's name with Case's. Then you deleted it. I still don't understand why Case put it on my talk page and he isn't very forthcoming. Can you explain to me what he was trying to accomplish? I've edited here for years and I don't remember seeing a tag like that before. --72.66.30.115 (talk) 03:25, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm given to understand that it's usually placed on talk pages of IPs just in case the ip becomes troublesome or vandalistic, etc. In the future if that ip or any other with that template became a problem, Wikipedia could contact whoever owns the ip about the issue. -- t numbermaniac c 04:32, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have nothing to add to numbermaniac's explanation—he says it best. Ideally they'd be on all IP talk pages where a templated warning had been given.

But I find your claim that you've "edited here for years" very interesting in light of your first edit from that IP being barely a month old. Maybe I wasn't so far off with my suggestion that more than one editor is at work here, or something else is going on ... Daniel Case (talk) 04:37, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

numbermaniac has nailed it: Daniel's middle name is Justin, as in "it's usually placed on talk pages of IPs just in case the ip becomes troublesome or vandalistic, etc." numbermaniac, don't tell DJC that the whois button is at the bottom of every IP's talk page, obviating his offensive use of it as a non-warning vandalism warning. Expressing opinions an admin dislikes is not "vandalism", "troublesome" or "tendentious", but that doesn't stop some admins from trying to punish you for expressing them.
@ Daniel Case: my advice to you, Sherlock, is that you begin looking for a pill for borderline paranoia, for yourself. --72.66.30.115 (talk) 18:29, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That was a perfect coincidence. I had no idea what his middle name was, I didn't even realise that until you just pointed it out. -- t numbermaniac c 23:47, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nina Rosenwald's article

I saw your chat on Dougweller's talkpage. You were absolutely correct to restore the article. My version was an improvement in every way over the deleted version—it even included a negative opinion of Nina R that was sourced and cited and also included an EL to the negative information, although the EL was, in a sense, superfluous and therefore deprecated. But the negative content I had added was not enough to satisfy the ideologues—they repeatedly added descriptions of her that were violations of BLP or NPOV or both. Having to revert their violations began an "edit war". Weller is correct when he says "if it weren't for one editor we might not have had so many problems". If I hadn't been there to stand up to them, they would have slimed Nina R from top to bottom and thought they were making the article neutral. "Progressives" become unhappy when someone prevents them from putting the maximum amount of negative information in articles about people and organizations they don't like. Roscelese, to name one, is a POV-pusher par excellence and would have been stopped long ago but for the fact that so many editors and admins agree with her political POV. Her masterpiece is probably Crisis pregnancy centers. You would think from reading that article that the only business of CPCs is telling lies, when in fact they save thousands of unborn babies every year by making it easier for mothers to carry their babies to term. I know all this because I've been editing here for years. As I mentioned to you previously, Verizon, my ISP, changed my IP address several weeks ago. This has lead some to jump to wrong conclusions about me, e.g., that I'm an SPA. Anyway, keep an eye peeled for the "little Hitlers" here who couldn't recognize a NPOV if their lives depended on it. --72.66.30.115 (talk) 04:43, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You'll need to give us your earlier IP then if you don't want us to treat you as a new editor. Your vandalism on your own page is noted. Dougweller (talk) 07:31, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've been doing a contributions search to see if there's anyone with an IP beginning "72." to see if any of them edited in 2013... it's lagging my computer and I'm not getting any results :( -- t numbermaniac c 09:28, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"if you don't want us to treat you as a new editor." That's a puzzling turn of phrase from an admin, considering the way I've been treated lately. What happened to AGF? Aren't new editors supposed to be treated more gently because they are new? I've recently been accused of being "tendentious", an SPA, part of an IP tag team, blah, blah, blah. Is that how you think new editors are supposed to be treated? Repeatedly tagging a "new editor's" talk page with something that looks like a warning related to vandalism—with NO EXPLANATION by the tagging admin as to why the tag was put there or what it's supposed to mean, even after an explanation was requested? That is vandalism. But, I'm not naive. It all comes down to the fact that I expressed political opinions that several editors and even admins find objectionable. --72.66.30.115 (talk) 18:04, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Numbermaniac. Yeah, schools aren't eligible for WP:A7s, but I can't see any evidence that this school actually exists. Its webpage - such as it is - suggests that it might be taking students some time in the near future.
