Shahrukh Khan (Hindi: शाहरुख़ ख़ान, Urdu: شاه رخ خان), pronunciation: /ʃɑːhrux xɑːn/, a.k.a SRK or King Khan, born November 2, 1965, New Delhi, India, is a leading Bollywood Indian actor.
Background
Born into a Muslim family of Pathan origin in Delhi, he has a Masters Degree in Mass Communication from Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi. His wife is Gauri Khan (formerly Gauri Chibber), a Punjabi from Delhi. He has a son named Aryan Khan (born November 12, 1997) and a daughter named Suhana Khan (born May 23, 2000).
Career
Shahrukh Khan first came to the fore while appearing on various television series, particularly when playing the role of 'Abhimanyu' in Fauji (Soldier) in 1988; he also had a minor role in Circus in 1989, which depicted the life of circus performers. He made his movie debut in 1992 with Deewana. In 1993 he attracted a great deal of attention with two successive negative roles in Baazigar (as an anti-hero and murderer) and Darr (as a paranoid lover). 1995 was a very successful year for SRK. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) broke box office records and Shah Rukh, as the lead, was given a great deal of credit for its success. He attracted a legion of fans and could now pick and choose between film offers.
DDLJ was followed by a string of SRK successes, most of them love stories, which included Pardes, Dil to Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Devdas, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Veer-Zaara. Shahrukh Khan also won critical praise for his performance in Anjaam, Dil Se and Swades.
His association with director/producer Yash Chopra has resulted in successes such as Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein and Veer-Zaara. He also found success working with Karan Johar and Yash Johar on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho.
Shahrukh is known as a convincing screen lover, and seems to spark equally good performances from his female co-stars - in cinema-speak, he has good screen chemistry with his heroines.
- His films with Juhi Chawla (Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Darr and Yes Boss) all did moderately well at the box office.
- He has acted opposite Madhuri Dixit in several movies, and has been commercially successful in Koyla, Dil to Pagal Hai and Devdas.
- Each of the five movies in which he co-starred with actress Kajol were box office successes - Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham .
- His chemistry with Rani Mukerji has been mostly successful shown in movies such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Chalte Chalte, Veer-Zaara and Paheli.
- His movies with Preity Zinta, Dil Se, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Veer-Zaara have either been commercially or critically successful, or both.
Despite his success, some have criticized Shahrukh for sticking to "safe" romantic roles (such as his roles in Karan Johar's films). With Swades and Paheli, Khan took a different take on roles.
Shahrukh co-owns a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with actress Juhi Chawla (a friend ever since they co-starred in Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman) and film director Aziz Mirza. In 2004 another of his production houses, Red Chilies Entertainment, produced the hit film Main Hoon Na and co-produced Kaal in 2005 with Karan Johar. He also produced Paheli, which was India's selection for the Academy awards consideration in the foreign films category.
Nasreen Munni, the noted British filmmaker, recently produced a two-part documentary on Shahrukh, "The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan". Featuring his 2004 Temptations concert tour, the film contrasts Khan's "inner world" of family and daily life, with the "outer world" of his work.
Awards
Shahrukh has won six Filmfare awards for Best Actor, the most recent being in 2005 for Swades, acting the role of an Indian-American NASA engineer whose life is transformed by his encounters with rural India. 2004 was also a good year for Shahrukh; he acted in three movies, receiving Filmfare nominations for his work in each of them.

Trivia
- Firmly insists that he will never kiss any of his heroines on the mouth
- However, earlier in his career, he appeared in what was apparently an "explicit for Bollywood" sex scene in the 1992 film Maya Memsaab [1].
- Lives in a palatial heritage mansion called Mannat (formerly Villa Vienna) at Bandra's Bandstand, in the city of Mumbai - a city where many Bollywood stars can only afford apartments, especially in the city's most expensive areas. The mansion is rumored to have cost more than 130 million rupees (13 crores)
- Loves computer games and hi-tech gadgets.
- Khan was a chain smoker; however, he vowed that he would quit before his 40th birthday in 2005, as part of a Bollywood push to de-glamorize smoking [2]. It is not clear whether he has actually quit, or just cut down his smoking drastically.
- A grenade was thrown during his concert in Sri Lanka, killing two people.
- Married to Gauri Khan who is a Hindu. The couple now have two children. His son, Aryan Khan, appeared in a scene in the film Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham, playing the younger version of the character played by his father. Aryan also collaborated with his father in dubbing the movie The Incredibles into Hindi. The film was released in India as Hum Hain Lajawaab.
- Although his birth name, which means "Face of the King," is spelled Shahrukh, he prefers and signs his name Shah Rukh and his name is often abbreviated to SRK.
