The name Catholic Church (literally "the universal church") can be used to refer to a number of entities and conceptualizations, viz.
- It is a proper name of the largest Christian denomination comprised of 23 autonomous churches in communion with the bishop of Rome (see list below), also called the Roman Catholic Church.
- It is commonly used interchangeably with the largest of these churches, the Latin Rite Church (consisting of 98% of those Christians in communion with the bishop of Rome).
- The Eastern Orthodox Church self-identifies as "the Catholic Church"
- Many other Christian churches, identify themselves explicitly as Catholic (for example, churches of the Anglican Communion). Indeed, some use the term "Catholic Church" in their name (e.g., The Old Catholic Church, the Polish National Catholic Church, the Ecumenical Catholic Church).
