Plot
Piku Banerjee (Deepika Padukone) is a Bengali architect who resides in Delhi, along with her 70 year old father, Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan). Bhashkor has constipation problem and traces each and every problem's root to his bowel movements. Piku loves her father and, as her mother is no more, takes good care of him, but gets extremely irritated with him at times because of his eccentricities. Her colleague, Syed Afroz (Jishu Sengupta) is a good friend, and she is a regular client of Syed's friend, Rana's (Irrfan Khan) taxi business. Rana has his own family problems with his mother and sister.

Piku wants to sell their house in Kolkata, but Bhashkor objects vehemently. He decides to go to Kolkata himself to cancel the deal. Piku has to accompany him, since she cannot let him travel alone. Bhashkor brings up his constipation problem and decides to travel by road. Due to Piku being very problematic with other drivers of Rana, they run away before Piku's trip. Piku, disappointed with the Taxi agency, decides to book a flight but at the right moment Rana arrives to take the pair to Kolkata by road. Later in the movie we come to know that he hasn't informed his family about this trip.

On the way, the group encounters many incidents, including Rana on the verge of losing patience due to Bhashkor's fussy behavior and his constipation. They finally reach Kolkata, where Piku's relatives still live in the old house and Bhashkor asks Rana to stay for some time. Piku and Rana go out and gradually grow close.

Rana leaves Kolkata the next day, telling her that she has got a "very interesting family", and also subtly hinting not to sell the house. He also tells, or rather requests, Bhaskor to stop his eccentricities which he eventually listens to.

Piku announces that she has changed her mind and the house will not be sold. Meanwhile Bhashkor's sudden desire to ride a bicycle increases as he cycles through the city alone, leaving everyone worried. He returns with a packet of "kochuri" leaving Piku furious at him. He simply steps out of the toilet, stating that his constipation is cleared and he needs to cycle everyday. He also remembers Rana who had told him to eat everything and not be picky about food. Piku is secretly happy but doesn't emote much. The next day, everyone discovers that Bhashkor had passed away in his sleep. After his funeral in Kolkata, Piku returns to Delhi, where she pays up whatever due she owes Rana. Piku observes that parents, however irritating they become in their old age, should not be judged. A funny revelation is also made in the end that Syed has constipation and Bhaskor knew that for a long time. The movie ends on a happy note as the maid who had left in the early part of the movie due to Bhaskor's eccentricities returns to work.

Cast

Production

Casting

The main cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan was finalised in mid-2014.[7] In preparation for the role of Piku, Padukone learned Bengali as her character is from Bengal.[8] Initially, there were early reports that Jisshu Sengupta was cast as the romantic lead opposite Deepika Padukone, but Sengupta in fact plays Padukone's character's best friend in the film.[6][9] Irrfan Khan plays the romantic lead opposite Deepika Padukone.[10][11] Bachchan essays the role of a Bangali bhadrolok, while Moushumi Chatterjee portrays a family member.[12] Akshay Oberoi was cast in a cameo.[13]

Filming

Principal photography for Piku began in August 2014, when shooting of the film's first schedule took off in Kolkata.[14] The first schedule for Piku was also filmed in Delhi and Mumbai and included filming of indoor scenes.[15][16][17] The second schedule of filming started on 30 October 2014 in Kolkata and took place mostly in the north part of the city.[17][18][19] Specifically, shooting for the film took place at the iconic Howrah Bridge in the city's Shyambazar neighbourhood and at Bishop Lefroy Road, the residence of Satyajit Ray.[19][20][21] During the shooting at Howrah Bridge, Bachchan was seen cycling around the city dressed as his character.[22] The Kolkata schedule was completed on 18 November 2014 and shooting now shifted to Delhi and Patdi Near Surendranagar in Gujarat.[23][24] The "Journey Song" was shot in Gujarat in December 2014 on the state highway connecting Ahmedabad to Bhuj.[25] Shooting in Delhi took place at Gurgaon cyber hub and city club where Padukone and Khan were seen filming.[26] The film was wrapped up after its last schedule shot in Varanasi. Both Padukone and Khan shot on the ghats of Banaras under chilly conditions and also attracted a crowd on the ghats of Banaras.[27]

Promotion

The makers of the film released a video of day one on the sets of Piku which is called Piku Begins. The video has the cast speak about what viewers can expect from the film.[28] As a part of promotions, the makers have released onset pictures of the film's shooting where the main cast are all seen in character.[29] Bachchan's first look was revealed from the film that depicts his character of an old Bengali man with long hair and a big belly.[30] On 25 March 2015, as part of the promotion, Deepika revealed the poster of the film through her twitter handle.[31]

Soundtrack

Anupam Roy composed the soundtrack for the film.

Untitled

The soundtrack was composed entirely by Roy, who also wrote the lyrics. The first song, "Journey Song", was released on 1 April 2015. The official music album was released online on April 21, 2015.
