In 2013, Ranjith announced his untitled next film featuring Mohanlal and Manju Warrier, intended to release in early 2014. According to Ranjith, both Mohanlal and Manju would have strong roles and the story was based on a socially relevant theme, but within the frames of mainstream cinema. The film was set to begin production sometime in December 2013. The project also made news as Manju's come-back film into Malayalam cinema after a gap of 14 years. Deccan Chronicle rated 2.5 out of 5 and said "Any of his[Mohanlal] fans, who are exposed to thrillers of Hollywood and Bollywood like Oceans 11 and Special 26 will lose the thrill soon. There is nothing commendable about the script or cinematography or music", but gave regards to Mohanla's action sequences and car chasing scenes, Siddique and his companions performance, Mythili and Musthafa's "heart touching" moments. And also wrote "The socially relevant message that are sprinkled very often are really effective and needful at present". Akhila Menon of Filmibeat.com rated 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "Ranjith's craft as a filmmaker is visible throughout the movie. But what Loham lacks is, his brilliance as a writer" and praised the performance of Mohanlal and Siddique. Malayala Manorama rated 2.5 out of 5 stars and wrote "Loham has Mohanlal, reminiscent of Captain Vijay in Pingami, with the twirling of his ever-famous mustache, but that's as far as it goes. If Ranjith hadn't made a batting side with 20 instead of 12, and not gone overboard with the star adoration, maybe the metal would have at least looked spray painted".

Pramod Thomas of The New Indian Express commented "Mollywood has been in an experimental mode of late. Unfortunately, movies like Loham are many laps behind in race to this glory. When Megalomaniac directors decide to live in the shadow of their past glory, films like Loham happen". Veeyen of Nowrunning.com rated 2 out of 5 stars and wrote "'Loham' has none of the shine or shimmer that was expected of it. At best it looks like an antique bronze piece that has taken some fine patina all over it", but praised Mohanlal and Siddique's performance. Parech C. palicha of Rediff.com rated 2 out of 5 and commented "Loham lacks lusture, and is not original at all". Sify praised the performance of Mohanlal and humour of Siddique and Soubin Saheer but criticized the script saying "Loham is about a topical subject but it is far from engaging". Raj Vikram of Metromatinee said that technically the movie is slick with well shot sequences. Mohanlal is the lifeblood of the movie and he pulls off an easy role by his standards with characteristic panache. Loham is not among the best works of director Renjith but is far better than some of his forgettable duds.

Loham: The Yellow Metal or simply Loham is a 2015 Indian Malayalam thriller film written and directed by Ranjith, based on gold smuggling in the state of Kerala. It stars Mohanlal and Andrea Jeremiah in lead roles, with a large supporting cast of Siddique, Ajmal Ameer, Renji Panicker, Vijayaraghavan, KPAC Lalitha, Musthafa, Suresh Krishna, Gauri Nanda, Joju George, Abu Salim and Santhosh Keezhattoor.[4] The film was produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner Aashirvad Cinemas and distributed by Maxlab Cinemas and Entertainments. Sreevalsan J. Menon composed the film score, and Rajamani created the background score. Kunjunni S. Kumar was head of cinematography.[5] Actress Mythili debuted as assistant director in the film.[6]

Principal photography commenced in Calicut in March 2015. The film was shot in Calicut, Kochi and Dubai.[7] The first official film teaser was released on 12 August 2015[8] Loham opened on 20 August 2015, in over 250 theatres across India, with about 1,000 shows daily.[9] The film met with mixed reviews[10] and was released in the UAE and the UK on 28 August 2015.[2][11] It holds the record for the highest opening day gross in Malayalam film industry.[12]

Plot

Loham tells the story of gold smuggling through the Kozhikode Airport. Jayanthi (Andrea Jeremiah) arrives from Mumbai to Kozhikode in search of her husband, Ramesh (Ashvin A Mathew). She hires the taxi of Raju (Mohanlal), who works in the cab service "Car Nation" to go to Kochi.

The story then takes shape in the urban landscape of the metro. When Jayanthi tries to tie the loose ends to find out the mystery behind the disappearance of Ramesh, many secret doors open and both Raju and Jayanthi are attacked. Later, Jayanthi finds out that Raju is not just a taxi driver, but has another mission in mind.

Development

In 2013, Ranjith announced his untitled next film featuring Mohanlal and Manju Warrier, intended to release in early 2014. According to Ranjith, both Mohanlal and Manju would have strong roles and the story was based on a socially relevant theme, but within the frames of mainstream cinema. The film was set to begin production sometime in December 2013. The project also made news as Manju's come-back film into Malayalam cinema after a gap of 14 years.[13] Later Prithviraj Sukumaran was also officially announced to be in the cast in a significant role. Mohanlal revealed the news through his Facebook page, which will be produced by Aashirvad Cinemas. A source close to the production team said that the film was set up for a Vishu 2014 release.<ref>{{cite news|author=Asha Prakash|title=Prithviraj joins Mohanlal and Manju Warrier in Ranjith’s film|url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/malayalam/movies/news/Prithviraj-joins-Mohanlal-and-Manju-
