Ice District is a $2.5 billion mixed-use sports and entertainment district being developed on 25 acres (100,000 m2) of land in Downtown, Edmonton, Alberta. When completed it will be Canada’s largest mixed use and entertainment district.[1][2]

Landmarks

Rogers Place

Rogers Place, the future home arena for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL, will be the main attraction of the district. Opening in 2016, it will seat 18,500 people for hockey games.[3] The cost of the arena is expected to be $480 million.[4]

Winter garden

The winter garden, a 34,000-square-foot (3,200 m2), climate-controlled facility, will span 104 Avenue. It will be a public gathering space and will connect the LRT with the grand entrance of Rogers Place. There will also be a pedway connection to the new JW Marriott hotel. It is expected to open in September 2016 at a cost of $56.5 million.[5]

Two new office buildings

Two new office buildings will be built in the district. Stantec Tower, the new headquarters of Stantec, will be the tallest building in Edmonton at 66 storeys[6] high and at a height of 250.8 metres. Thirty-three storeys will be for residential units.[7] The City of Edmonton is building a 27-storey office building. It is expected to open in fall of 2016.[8]

MacEwan LRT Station

The district will be served by LRT at MacEwan Station, located just north of Rogers Place.[9]

Public plaza

There will be a 50,000-square-foot (4,600 m2) public plaza.[10]

JW Marriott hotel

In 2018, Marriott will be opening a 56-storey, 362-room JW Marriott hotel. This will be the third hotel of this brand in Canada.

Community arena

The Edmonton Downtown Community Arena will be the home arena of the MacEwan University Griffins hockey teams, and will host practices for the Oilers and the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. It will have a seating capacity of 1000.[11]

Grand Villa Edmonton Casino

Currently known as the Baccarat Casino, it will be moving in summer of 2016 into a new 125,000-square-foot (11,600 m2) facility next to Rogers Place.[12]

Cineplex theatre

Located on 103 Street between 103 Avenue and 104 Avenue, it will have two large format screens and five licensed VIP screens. There will also be a lounge.[13]
