Sairat (Template:Lang-en) is an Indian 2016 romance film starring Rinku Rajguru and Akash Thosar. It is directed by Nagraj Manjule and produced by Nagraj Manjule, Nitin Keni, and Nikhil Sane under the banner of Aatpat Production, Zee Studios and Essel Vision Productions. The music, produced by Ajay-Atul, was released on 6 April 2016. The film was released in India on 29 April 2016.[6] It becomes the biggest weekend opener for Marathi film breaking record previously held by Natsamrat.[7] Sairat was the first Marathi film to cross ₹50 crore (US$5.9 million) mark.[8] It will be remade in Tamil,Telugu, Malayalam ,Kannada,Gujarati and Hindi.[9] The remake rights for the four southern languages are acquired by Rockline Venkatesh [10][11][12] The film has become the first Marathi film to gross over ₹100 crore (US$12 million) worldwide.[13]

Plot

Sairat is lovestory of young couple Prashant(Parshya), from lower-caste poor family and brave, tomboyish, Archana(Archi), from rich upper-caste Patil(politician) family. In local cricket-match played in Bitargaon-village, captain Parshya, makes his team win and awarded by MLA Tatya Patil, Archi's father. Parshya runs excitedly towards stepwell, to meet his crush, Archi. Archi rides Royal Enfield(everyone is stunned). Archi learns that Parshya's scholar. Parshya's friend Pradeep(Balya), Salim(Salya) help Parshya reach his love. They send her a loveletter through a child, but Archi everytime sends him back. Finally, he throws the letter by making airplane. Archi picks it. Archi reads a poem written by Parshya. Mangya, Archi’s cousin holds Parshya for observing Archi. But Archi orders Mangya not to touch him. Archi realizes she too fell in love with Parshya. Archi drives tractor till Parshya's home. She chats with Parshya's mother, telling that she is going to her farm (intended to Parshya). Archi goes to farm. Parshya follows her. Both propose their love for each other. They romance. During college lecture, Archi's brother, Prince, talks on phone. Professor, spots him, questions him. Prince slaps the professor, depicting divide between politicians-common people. Archi's mother finds Archi talking for long on phone telling it does not suit a girl to have desires depicting gender inequality, backwardness. Archi-Parshya meet during Prince's birthday-party at Archi's bungalow. While the party's on, they kiss in woods nearby. Tatya spots them, drags Archi back home, Parshya is beaten, ordered to leave Bitargaon. Parshya reaches Karmala-village at Uncle's place. Archi runs away,reaching Karmala. They decide to flee faraway. They reach bus-station. While hiding themselves from Tatya's gangmen, they board bus leading back to Bitargaon. Police catches them. Tatya files a case against Parshya, about Kidnapping-Rape. Mangya, now helping, informs Archi about the false-statement. Archi tears the case-paper, shouts to free Parshya. Parshya’s freed, but gangmen start beating him. Archi runs to save Parshya, finds a gun, picks it up, points it at the attackers, runs away with Parshya, board a train, landing in Hyderabad-city. They eat Dosa. Parshya drinks water kept beside roadside-stall. Archi drinks packaged water. Archi sells her gold chain. They roam all-day, spend the night at bus-station. Next night, while molested by a gang, a Marathi-woman, Suman tai, rescues them and invites to her slum home. Parshya narrates everything. Suman-tai, compassionate, gives them a storeroom to stay. Archi finds difficult coping with miserable conditions but she accepts it. She expresses to Parshya that she wants to live with him and also wants her home. They don’t want to live under others’ beneficence. Parshya helps Suman-tai. Archi works in Coldrinks-factory. One midnight, Archi's factory-friend calls for important work. Parshya doubts over Archi liking her boss, slaps her in public, squeezes her hand asking for justification. Archi, repenting on her decision goes away. Parshya later realises his mistake, tries to find Archi at all places, failed. Archi boards a train, leaving Parshya alone. Train stops at a station. Archi sees a poor couple, begging, but being-together in worst circumstances. She remembers Parshya and returns. Parshya feels sorry. Both hug each other. They get married. Parshya gets a job in good garage. Archi becomes manager of factory. Both live happily in small home. They have a son, Akash (nickname-Tatya remembering Archi's father). While riding home, enroute, many couples are being beaten by police depicting the sad face of moral policing. Tatya feels his daughter cheated him. He suffers political defeat. Parshya's sister is rejected for marriage. His family leaves Bitargaon, settles in Gujarat and tells villagers Parshya is dead for them, requesting to accept their family depicting love marriage as sin for families. Since Archi stays in contact with her mother, Prince gets to know their whereabouts. One day, a neighbour woman, takes Akash to market for ride. Prince, his men arrive. He gives Archi, the gifts sent by her mother. Archi does hospitality while Parshya arrives home. Seeming like happy ending, the neighbour returns, telling Akash to go inside his house but finds his parents killed, lying in pool of blood.

The songs and background score for the film are composed by composer duo Ajay−Atul, who had earlier worked with director Nagraj Manjule on his debut film Fandry (2013).[14] The soundtrack includes western classical pieces recorded at Sony Scoring Stage in Hollywood, California, a first for an Indian film.[15] The orchestra of 66 musicians – including a 45-piece string section, 6-piece woodwind section, 13-piece brass section, 6-piece horn section, and 1 harp – was conducted by Mark Graham.[6]

Production

Nagraj Manjule wrote Sairat as a "classic love story" and aimed for it to be more commercial than his previous films. It was based on his own experiences and so he chose his own village Jeur, Karmala Taluka in Solapur, as the setting. Filming commenced in February 2015 and concluded in May 2015.[16]

Release

The film was released with English subtitles in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, NCR, Kolkata, Bhilai, Raipur, Bhiwadi, Karnataka, and Telangana.[17] The film screened at more than 450 theatres.[18] Such has been the Sairat craze that two additional shows one at midnight and one at 3 a.m. have been introduced in a hall in Rahimatpur in Satara district.[19] The film was released in about 200 screens in other parts of India (Outside Maharashtra) with english subtitles.[20] Sairat will be the first Marathi film to get a cinematic release in the United Arab Emirates.[21] It is going to release in Kerala on 10 June and in Chennai on 11 June.[22]

Piracy

In April 2016, Nagraj Manjule, the director of Sairat, approached the Mumbai police after his movie was leaked online two days ahead of its release. The copy had a watermark indicating that it was a "censor copy", or a copy intended for censor board officials to review prior to the film's release.[23] [24] [25] In May 2016, A 23-year-old mobile shop owner was arrested for allegedly indulging in piracy of Sairat.[26] The cyber crime police arrested a Byculla-based cable operator for broadcasting the pirated version of Sairat on his network.[27]

Critical reception

In addition to challenging the caste system in India, Sairat casts Archi (the main female character) in a leading role in the action scenes.[28] The director was questioned about his decision to cast Rinku Rajguru as the main character, despite her not being "conventionally 'good looking'"; he disputed this and described most film actresses as "bimbettes" compared to the strong character played by Rinku.[29] Ganesh Matkari of Pune Mirror rated the film with four star saying, "The word I will use to describe Sairat is 'significant'."[30]

Box office

Sairat took ₹3.60 crore (US$420,000) on its opening day, with a total of ₹12.10 crore (US$1.4 million) on its opening weekend.[31] It has collected more than ₹65 crore (US$7.6 million) and enters 4th week at more than 525 screens,[32] making it the best performing Marathi film of all time and the first to pass ₹65 crore (US$7.6 million).[33][34][35][36] At the end of the 6th week, it has collected Rs. 90 crores on the box office. [37]

Awards

The film was selected for the 66th Berlin International Film Festival under its Generation 14 Plus section.[38][39] Rinku Rajguru was awarded a National Film Award – Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) at the 63rd National Film Awards in 2015 "for her effective portrayal of a lively girl who defies societal norms but ultimately has to face the wrath of her family".[40][41]
