re: Usage of Meltyukhov for Soviet unit history facts

For things that are not controversial, and lying about which doesn't advance Soviet (Russian) nationalism / falsified version of history. Most mundane things are ok, IIRC the problems with his works were related to topics like Katyn denial, highlighting or inventing Polish abuse of Soviet prisoners while ignoring / denying Soviet atrocities, and overall conclusions that support claims like "Soviet Union was a peaceful country that respected human rights and was invaded and brutalized by aggressive, atrocity-prone neighbors'. Mind you, I don't remember the details now, but bottom line he was clearly falsifying some aspects of history to promote current Russian rewriting of history to promote Russian (Putin's) agenda (Soviet Union was not bad, let's restore the glory days that people forgot about and that were lied about by Western imperialists, etc.). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:14, 24 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Imperial Russia and Soviet Union topics

Hello, Kges. On your missing topics page, the 9th Army Corps and 2nd Guards Infantry Division are still listed. I have created those articles. Is it okay to remove them from the list? Also, the Fyodor Kostenko image from the Russian wiki will not show up on the English wiki. Zee money (talk) 15:15, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the created articles from the list. The Kostenko photo won't show up because the Russian image is fair use (copyrighted) and fair use images aren't shared between wikis. Kges1901 (talk) 15:35, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Kges1901,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 808 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

3rd Guards Composite Aviation Regiment, Krmysk

I'm looking at doing an article for this unit, which appears to be 3 GvIAP [1] and 55 OVP amalgamated. Can you find anything more about it? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 05:50, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2016 Local media from Krymsk], presumably quoting regimental personnel, says: Formed 21 October 1941 from personnel of the Chelyabinsk School of Gunners and Bombardiers as the 688th Night Light Bomber Aviation Regiment. Less than a month later, just after completing training, the regiment left for the front. In December and January 1942 it fought in the destruction of the Rzhev enemy group, and in the summer in the Battle of Stalingrad. For its actions at Stalingrad, the regiment became the 59th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment on 8 February 1943. On 2 September 1943 received the Order of the Red Banner. Fought in Orel-Kursk operation [Battle of Kursk], battles for liberation of Belarus, and Warsaw offensive [likely Warsaw-Poznan Offensive in Jan 1945, but could also be the Lublin-Brest Offensive in summer 1944]. For actions in liberating Baranovichi received Baranovichi honorific 27 June 1944, awarded Order of Suvorov 3rd class for actions in Berlin Offensive 16 April 1945. In August 1956, relocated to Astrakhan, became part of PVO, renamed 393rd GvIAP. December 1992 became 209th GvIAP, 1 September 2001 absorbed 562nd IAP at Krymsk and became 3rd GvIAP with transfer of battle flag and honorifics of 209th GvIAP and moved to Krymsk. 24 August 2009 3rd GvIAP and 178th Separate Helicopter-Rescue Detachment became 6972nd Guards Baranovichi Red Banner Order of Suvorov 3rd class Air Base of the 1st category at Krymsk. 11 November 2013 reformed to 1st Guards Mixed Aviation Division with transfer of the 6972nd's honorifics and flag. Col. Tagir Gadzhiyev was the division commander in 2016."
Archived Russian forum post where somebody tried to compile a history of the 6972nd Air Base Unfortunately most of the links referenced are permanently dead.
Ural State Military History Museum had a brief paragraph about regt in WWII b/c Chelyabinsk in Urals.
topwar.ru article about a dead pilot from the regiment and his letters home Adds that the regiment became an assault aviation regiment in May 1942.
[2] According to this 2017 press release from his home area, Tagir Gadzhiyev is now a Major General.
Official PR about division formation in 2013, RIAN article The division is apparently part of the 4th Air Army VVS and PVO according to topwar
So I'd recommend we use the most recent title and call the article "1st Guards Mixed Aviation Division (Russia)" (because a WWII AD existed with that name). Keep in mind that 3rd GvIAP also was formed during WWII and has different lineage, so I think a (Russia) disambig is needed for the 3rd GvIAP redirect. Kges1901 (talk) 09:51, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yet, in 2008 Kommersant reported that a 1st Guards Stalingrad-Svir Mixed Aviation Division was based at Yeysk, [3] although Holm says that it was disbanded 2009. Kges1901 (talk) 09:51, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much Kges!! We already have an article about the division, 1st Guards Bomber Aviation Division, thought it may now be composite. As you will see there, in 2013 it was reformed with five subordinate units - bomber, fighter aviation, transport, reconnaissance, and one other. JUst added that data. So I'll get on with a new article with all this data. Thanks!! Buckshot06 (talk) 21:54, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Southwestern Front commanders articles

Hello, Kges. I have created 3 articles for SW Front commanders from your Missing topics about Russian, Soviet, and CIS Military History list. They are Fyodor Ogorodnikov, Nikolai Volodchenko and Nikolai Stogov. I also put up the article for the 29th Chernigov Inf. Reg. I want to ask you if Fyodor Radetzsky and Fyodor Radetzky are the same person or two different people? Also, for the general Vladimir Smirnov, I only made one for Vladimir Vasilyevich Smirnov. Are there other generals who are also named Vladimir Smirnov? Zee money (talk) 14:52, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for adding the references on the new SW Front commander articles, but you still have a problem with not translating the reference templates. Additionally, you should link military unit names in the succession boxes and they should placed at the bottom of the article and after {{s-start}} you should place {{s-mil}} to denote that these are military commands. Now to address your questions: the Radetzskys are the same person, it is a spelling variation. There are no other generals named Vladimir Smirnov. Kges1901 (talk) 19:48, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Does Galeotti include a full order of battle? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 10:02, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but he has some inaccuracies, like misidentifying the 68th Army Corps as the "68th Army". Kges1901 (talk) 10:07, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've just found it. I also highlighted the "Sixty-Eighth Army". However it's ten times better and more authoritative than globalsecurity.org, and I have scribbled some rough notes that together with my warfare.ru archived Ground Forces page record will provide a much better order of battle replacement for the Eastern Military District at least. Buckshot06 (talk) 10:25, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Don't forget to check it against Russian media because it will become get dated, especially as the RGF continued to reform divisions.Kges1901 (talk) 10:31, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You should consider nominating 7th Guards Tank Division to appear on the Main Page's "Did you know". It's less than 7 days old and it's already looking like a half-solid article. Cheers. EyeTruth (talk) 21:00, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

345th Rifle Division

345th Rifle Division Hello, Richard. I wrote most of the 2nd Formation of the 345th Rifle Division based on what you wrote in your article on the 87th Rifle Corps. The only cite in that article was Feskov. I would be happy to add other references if you could provide them.

@Wreck Smurfy: The corps article was written by Buckshot, but it goes back to the first version of the 33rd Motor Rifle Division article here, created by him way back in 2007. You'll have to ask him where he got it from. I'm not sure that the information pertains to the 345th, the other article said 355th, but Glantz seems to contradict himself between his two August Storm books on which divisions were part of the 87th Corps. Either way, I'm definite that it doesn't come from Feskov et al 2013, as I've checked the page and there's nothing about the Sakhalin invasion in the entire book.Kges1901 (talk) 08:47, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The original 33 MRD source is at the very bottom of that quoted page - Soldat.ru forums. A unfiltered version of the original source Feskov et al used, but needing to be checked against published sources. Buckshot06 (talk) 09:17, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Buckshot06: The soldat.ru forum link no longer works. Kges1901 (talk) 10:05, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There's no link - there never was any. The forums are accessible via http://soldat.ru/forum/, but soldat.ru has changed, probably more than once, the thread links and I cannot reaccess old threads (as you'll see if you try to click on other soldat.ru forum discussions that I linked.) It remains sub-standard for wikipedia purposes and needs to be verified against published sources. Buckshot06 (talk) 10:15, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like at least some of the text was from Shikorad's Дальневосточный финал, which is not fully available online. The book says it was the 355th that was at Sakhalin. Kges1901 (talk) 10:39, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It seems I mistook the main editor of the 87th Corps article as Kges rather than Buckshot. I have no sources at all for the 1945 history of the division, apart from a passing reference in Sharp, which does not mention anything about Sakhalin, so I will leave it you two to figure out while I continue the 1st Formation at Sevastopol. If the 2nd Formation info proves incorrect, please edit accordingly. Wreck Smurfy (talk) 03:59, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wary of creating an article for this brigade (the first sentences of which I've stuck at North Caucasus Military District for now) because I cannot trace the lineage. It was created on December 1, 1993, and the Russian WP pages for it and the 33rd Guards MRB appear to trace a lineage link from the 33rd Guards MRB (9 GTC) to the 204th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment, which may have ended up not in 9/16 GTD but 94 GMRD. But I cannot find anything that substantiates the formation of the 136 GMRB from the 204 GMRR. Can you dive into the Russian internet and find anything? Buckshot06 (talk) 01:02, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Buckshot06: The Russian article was unusually well sourced, so this Russian news article seems to say that 136th was formed in 1993 with different honorifics, then in 1997 combined with the 204th Guards MRR of the 205th OMSBR, inheriting the 204th's honorifics. Ruwiki's lineage information is undoubtedly from this article, and I've added the inline citations there. Feskov lists a 204th Guards MRR with the honorifics that match up with svpressa as having been converted in 1957 from the 33rd Guards Mechanized Regiment, which is the 33rd Guards MRB's successor unit. The 204th was with 9th GTD (successor of 9th GTC), and between the late 1960s and late 1980s the 94th Guards swapped regiments with the 16th Guards Tank Division, resulting in the transfer of the 204th to the 94th Division. After the 94th left Germany, the 204th ended up in Buynaksk at the beginning of the 1990s. However, Feskov says that the lineage of the 204th was transferred to a new 204th, formed with the 205th Brigade at Buynaksk in 1996. Kges1901 (talk) 09:05, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Your last point from Feskov is completely correct. Andrew Duncan, 'Russian forces in decline,' Jane's Intelligence Review in 1996 (ish) writes and confirm at the time that a very unusual arrangement - a motor rifle regiment inside an independent motor rifle brigade - applied for a while in the mid 1990s. Thank you for finding the data for 204 GMRR (I Formation). Almost worth a small stub article on the 204 GMRR, just to sort out the tangled lineage links.
