Arne & Carlos is a Norwegian knitwear fashion designer duo, consisting of Carlos Zachrison and Arne Nerjordet. Their designs draw on Scandinavian and environmental influences. Their design company was established in 2002. Their first knit design book, 55 Christmas Balls to Knit, was released in 2010. They have released eight books in total, and have toured worldwide.

History

Arne Nerjordet (left) and Carlos Zachrison in 2010.

Arne & Carlos was founded by Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison. Nerjordet is Norwegian and was born near Lillehammer, Norway, where he grew up on his family's farm. He started knitting at a young age, with his mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.[1] He is the most experienced hand-knitter of the two.[2] Zachrison is half-Spanish and half-Swedish. He was born in Brazil and comes from a family of four generations of painters. They both learned their crafting skills from their families.[3] They live in a rural area in Valdres, in a converted train station, which functions as a studio and their home.[4]

They use Arne & Carlos as a brand name. In 2007, they launched a knitwear clothingline.[5] Items include cardigans and sweaters. They used motiffs inspired by Nordic geography and nature, such as reindeers, but also based upon the 1978 video game Space Invaders.[2]

Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo invited Arne & Carlos to guest-design a Christmas-themed mini-collection for Comme des Garçons, Kawakubo's fashion label. Arne & Carlos intially thought their ornaments would be used for in-store decorations, but found out Comme des Garçons sold them for €100 a piece. "We laughed at the price, but it was a provocation, too. We felt nobody should pay so much for something anybody can make. So we thought, let's write a book giving people all they need to do it themselves", Zachrison said.[2] They contacted their publisher with the idea and they were signed right away.[3] They choose 55 designs, because after the 55th, they decided to stop.[2] Their first book, Julekuler, released as 55 Christmas Balls to Knit, was released in 2010 and became an international best-seller.[4] Initially, their plan was to take a year off and write one book, but due to their unexpected succes they have been able to focus on writing more knit design books.[3]

In November 2014, Arne knitted a woollen doll of Kim Kardashian, depicting her "Break the Internet" photo cover of Paper. It took Arne three days to make it, Carlos said.[6] The Daily Telegraph commented that it made "knitting cool again".[7]

Influences and design

Arne & Carlos are inspired by Scandinavian culture;[8] they preach "slow living" and "good life" through their design. Zachrison considers their work a "counterreaction to the hyper-connected digital world". Newspaper The Korea Herald considers their work part of the Danish-Norwegian culture of hygge.[5]

Tours and expositions

Arne & Carlos have visited Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Japan.[3] In June 2016, they visited the Seoul International Book Fair, held in South Korea.[5] In July 2017, they visited Australia. With yarn company Australian Country Spinners, they collaborated on a knitting design, with merino wool. Nerjordet commented that "When we show people the yarn, they don't even believe it's wool (...) They say 'This is so soft, this can't be wool, it's so soft'. So I think if they get it, they won't go back".[1] In October 2017, they visited the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle, Washington.[9]

Works by Arne & Carlos are on a permanent display in the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design[10][11] and in the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, both located in Oslo. They have also been on display at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, for the exposition New Nordic,[12] and in the Gwangju Art Museum, in South Korea.[4][13]
