The First Purge is an upcoming American dystopian action horror film directed by Gerard McMurray. The fourth installment in The Purge franchise, the film is a prequel depicting the origins of the first annual "Purge", a 12-hour period in which all crime in America is legal. It is the first film in the series not to be directed by series creator James DeMonaco, who wrote the screenplay and served as a producer for The First Purge. The film stars Y'Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez, and Marisa Tomei. It is scheduled to be released on July 4, 2018, by Universal Pictures.

Synopsis

To push the crime rate below 1% for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of the oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.[3] Because there are more parties being thrown than people being killed, the NFFA take matters into their own hands.

Cast

Production

In September 2016, James DeMonaco, the creator of the franchise said that the fourth film would be a prequel to the trilogy, and it would show how the United States got to the point of accepting the Purge Night.[7] On February 17, 2017, it was reported that DeMonaco had officially announced that a fourth installment in The Purge franchise and a sequel to 2016 film The Purge: Election Year was in development at Universal Studios. DeMonaco would not return as director, but would be writing the script and producing the film, with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes, and Sebastien Lemercier.[8]

In July 2017, the director of Sundance film Burning Sands, Gerard McMurray, was hired to direct the film from the script by DeMonaco.[9]

Casting

On September 19, 2017, newcomers Y'Lan Noel and Lex Scott Davis were cast in the film to play the lead characters, and the film would be set on Staten Island.[4]

Filming

Principal photography began in mid-September, 2017 in Buffalo, New York. Shooting wrapped on November 8th, 2017.[10][11]

Release

The First Purge is scheduled to be released by Universal Pictures on July 4, 2018.[8]

Box office

In the United States and Canada, the film is projected to gross around $25 million over its five-day opening weekend.[12]
