- The Soyuz TMA-16 is launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome to the International Space Station, taking a space tourist, Guy Laliberté, founder and CEO of Cirque du Soleil.
- A 7.6 Mw earthquake on the Indonesian island of Sumatra kills at least 1,100 people.
- An international fact-finding mission headed by Swiss diplomat Heidi Tagliavini concludes that Georgia started the 2008 South Ossetia war and that Russia answered by using excessive measures.
- An 8.0 Mw earthquake in the Samoan Islands region causes a tsunami and kills at least 141 people.
