- More than 200 people die during several days of rioting between Muslims and Christians in Jos, Nigeria.
- A strong aftershock measuring 5.9 Mw strikes Haiti one week after an earthquake caused widespread destruction in Port-au-Prince and neighboring areas and killed more than 80,000 people.
- Republican Scott Brown wins the special senatorial election in Massachusetts, ending the Democratic Caucus's filibuster-proof supermajority in the United States Senate.
