The Saturdays are a British/Irish girl group formed in London in 2007, consisting of Frankie Sandford, Mollie King, Vanessa White, Rochelle Wiseman and Una Healy. They made their recording debut in 2008 under the record label Fascination Records, a sub-division of Polydor Records. Their debut album, Chasing Lights, produced four top 10 singles on the UK Singles Chart. The final single "Work" peaked at number 22. The band embarked on their first headlining UK tour, The Work Tour, in June 2009. The band started work on their second album during this tour.[1]

The band released their new single "Forever Is Over" on 5 October 2009 which debuted at number #2, being the first single lifted from their new album, Wordshaker, released on 12 October. The album peaked at #9 on the UK Albums Chart, dropping to #40 a week later. Their best selling singles are 'Ego' and 'Up'.[citation needed]

History

2008–2009: Chasing Lights

The Saturdays were signed to Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor Records. Their album, Chasing Lights, was recorded during May and June 2008 with input from multiple producers and writers, including Ina Wroldsen and Alex Cartana. The group supported Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up Tour before the release of their first single, "If This Is Love" sampling Yazoo's 1982 dance hit single "Situation" as its heavily-synthesised backing rhythm. The single was released in July 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.

The second single, "Up", was released in October 2008 and peaked at number 5, it is also their best selling single. Also in October, the album Chasing Lights was released. The album peaked at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart in its release week. The third single, "Issues", was released in January 2009 and reached number four.

As well as supporting Girls Aloud, The Saturdays also supported the Jonas Brothers at their Hammersmith Apollo gig on 11 September. They also played at Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball at The O2 Arena in December. On 5 November they performed at Perez Hilton's One Night In Liverpool, and played at Cardiff's Gay Pride event. On the Christmas 2008 special of British Nickelodeon show Ross Lee's Ghoulies, The Saturdays made a special appearance.[2] They also guest starred in Hollyoaks Later on 18 September 2008 and on a 10-minute BBC show, Myths. Early in 2009, the group produced a "Debut Singles" chart show for 4Music.

In March, the group released their fourth single, a cover of the Depeche Mode song "Just Can't Get Enough" as one of the official Comic Relief 2009 singles, released on digital sales, 1 March, and on physical sales, 2 March. On 8 March 2009, the single peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, just behind Flo Rida's single Right Round The song also was the girl's third consecutive top twenty hit in Ireland, breaking into the top ten at number 9 in its second week of release, giving them their first top ten single and their first top ten appearance in a foreign music market.[3]

The group also confirmed that they would be doing their own tour in 2009 – "The Work Tour", which coincided with the release of their fifth single, "Work". The single ended up peaking in the UK outside of the top twenty at #22, despite having heavy promotion.

2009–2010: Wordshaker

The Saturdays in June 2009

The group released their second album Wordshaker on 12 October, with opening sales of 15,022. The lead single from the album was "Forever Is Over" and on 22 August 2009, the music video was leaked onto YouTube. It entered the UK Singles Chart at #2 with sales of 38,846 on 11 October and also #9 (their highest debut) in the Irish charts on 9 October.

In 2008 and 2009, The Saturdays appeared in adverts for several products including a brand of deodorant, tampons,[4] mobile phones, hair removal products[5] and an operating system.[6]. They performed a gig under the name of Impulse Diaries at the HMV Forum in London, which was aired on Channel 4 in January 2010.

It was announced on Radio 1 in late September that the second single would be "Ego". The video was shot on 23 October, according to King's Twitter account, and it premiered on 17 November. It entered the UK Singles Chart before the official release and continued to climb. It peaked at #9 on the UK Singles Chart on the week of official release, while in Ireland it peaked at #10.

2010-present: Headlines

The Saturdays started working/recording their 3rd studio album early 2010, for a late 2010 release. The girl-group confirmed that their new single from their 3rd studio album would infact be called Missing You. The music video was shot in Spain, which Showbiz news gave everyone a few sneeky picture shots of the video. The single is set to be released on August 9th 2010, and the music video is set to premiere in early July.[7][8][9] Early this year The Saturdays confirmed they were booking writing and they would release The Saturdays: Our Story, the book cover has already been released, and you can pre-order the book at Play.com.[10]

Other Work

The Saturdays unveiled that they were book writing, and the book would later be called The Saturdays: Our Story an autobiography, and would be released sometime during September. The book will be about who we were before the band, how they got into the band and how it's been until now.[11] The book cover has already been released, and you can pre-order the book at Play.com.[12] The band were known for there bright colours during first album, Chasing Lights, but lost the colours during second album, Wordshaker and they later stated that you would see the colour back again during third studio album, Headlines. The Sats are also set to launch a clothing line for Rare. They all will design two pieces of clothing each, which will be sold in Topshop.[13]

Music Video

thumb|left|200px|The Saturdays in Missing You. "Missing You" will be accompanied by a music video for its single release. The music video was shot at the end of May, 2010[7]. The full music video will premiere at 10:00 in the morning UK time on their official site on June 26, 2010. A preview of the video was also revealed.[8] The music video was shot in spain. Within in the music video the group all do the same dance routine on the chorus. All the girls are seen wearing a number off different clothing. The chorus of the girls singing, the video was set on a beach, where the girls danced. All of the girls wear summery clothing as the single is released in the middle of the Summer. Frankie Sandford is seen a number of times walking through a forest in Spain. On 18th of June, on The Saturdays official YouTube a video taster was uploaded.[9] The music video is the first video of The Saturdays to be filmed out of the UK. The music video is also directed by Trudy Bellinger who also directed The Saturdays smash hit single Forever is Over.

Concept

The concept of the music video is that The Saturdays are on holiday in Spain, and they are saying they miss you. There are scences which The Saturdays are dancing on the beach with no one are around them just the girls. The idea of the music video to be shot in Spain, The girls are away from friends/family and they are missing them and are also home sick. The are scences where the girls walk off themselves, which symbols they are trying to get their head around that they are not with their loved ones no more. This aimed to give imagery to the viewer that they human and they do miss home when they are away been apart of The Saturdays, while recording aboard.

The video's chorus is The Saturdays dancing to a well rehearsed dance routine. Before changing to different shots of the girls by themselves, walking alone. The group's members are all up dancing and singing to the chorus, as the girl's sing "Try not to end up in tears" they splash water up, that shows that they are trying to hide crying by splashing water on themselves. The music video has parts where they are dancing and the shots keep changing to fast and slow, the video slows down at different stages of the video. Each girl is also wearing differnt colours clothing throught the video, as they have been colour coded.

The Saturdays have different colour mics to match the colour of their tights which they are wearing, Frankie Sandford wears orange, which her mic is orange also, Una Healy wears blue, same as her mic, Rochelle Wiseman has a red mic, which matches her clothing custume, Mollie King yellow and Vanessa White pink, but all of the group are wearing different types of black dresses, and balck high heels. They all have matching colour accessories, to match their tights and mics, e.g. rings, bags and sunglasses. They all do the same dance routine, while together on the music video. On the music video there are platforms which go up into the air, and The Saturdays are seen jumping onto them, while they are moving. As the chorus breaks in and says I'm ready for the lift up, Keep steady beat, the girl-group are standing on the platforms been took up into the sky. As the lyrics state Cus I'm ready for the big jump, Keep up with me, Una is seen jumping from on of the platforms which is going up, to another. Mollie and Frankie are seen falling as they have missed one of the platforms, but in the lyrics it states that we are going to go on and will leave them, but Mollie and Frankie finally finds another platform and jumps onto it and goes back up to catch up to the other girls. Then later The Saturdays are seen throwing and dropping things off the platforms, which you see falling later on in the video, e.g. gloves, bags and coats. The ending of the video is how the video started.
